3 THE R-Y WAY Rural Scene on the R-Y Route The opening up of the Regina-Yellowstone Highway during the summer of '924 supplied a want that for some years had made itself keenly felt by the ever-increasing number of motoring holiday makers. The Yellowstone Park, playground of the -, had been long cut off from the Canadian Prairies, through lack of direct highways, and, concurrently, access to the middle-west of the Dominion of Canada, had been difficult to the dweller in the middle States. Small wonder, then, that the new route at once proved popular among those seeking new fields to conquer on their holiday tour. The route was planned with a view of providing a direct and reliable highway between the Canadian and the Yellowstone Park, and at the same time to facilitate the entry into ern Canada of those American motorists who had long been desirous of seeing the Canadian Prairies, but had been prevented from doing so by lack of adequate knowledge of the highway situation. Starting at Regina, the capital city of Saskatchewan, the highway proper takes a southerly course through the progressive towns of Wilcox, Dummer, Ogema and Bengough, entering the United States at a point eighteen miles due south of the latter town, 3
4 and some 123 miles south of the starting point. A Canadian Customs and Immigration Official is stationed at the town of Bengough. to facilitate the formalities of entry and departure. Crossing the border into the State of Montana. the route runs via Whitetail. where the American Customs and Immigration station is located. Flaxville. Poplar. Vida. Circle and on to Terry. where junction is made with the famous Yellowstone Trail of the U.S.A. via which the traveller journeys direct to the Park. The full distance from Regina to Terry by the Regina-Yellowstone route is 325 miles. and from Regina to the gate of Yellowstone Park. about 700 miles. Owing to its geographical situation as the central city of the Canadian Prairies. Regina has been selected as the ern Canada headquarters of the leading banks and financial corporations of the Dominion. There are upwards of 150 wholesale houses located here. and for many years Regina has held the distinction of being one of the largest distribution points in the world in agricultural machinery. Local business in this line has exceeded $ in a single year. The city serves a territory covering upwards of 300 square miles. in which are located some 250 towns and villages connected by miles of railway. Subsequent to the opening of the original route. it was decided to continue the highway north of Regina. and the road has since been blazed and marked for a distance of 120 miles in that direction to the Saskatchewan town of Watrous. notable for the curative properties of the saline waters of Lake Manitou on the outskirts of the town. The highway between Watrous on the north and Terry at the southern extremity is a good dirt road. well graded and presenting no difficulty in any but extremely wet weather. The highway is marked from end to end with the emblem selected for that purpose-the letters R-Y in black on a yellow ground. letters now familiar to large numbers of tourists who have availed themselves of the new route. The Regina-Yellowstone Highway forms an important and essential link in the Prairie Parks Tour. one of the most pleasing and profitable round trips afforded on the continent. and a trip that is certainly unique among International tours. Immediately north of Regina, and served directly by the R-Y route is Last Mountain Lake, fifty miles long, with splendid sandy beaches, and justly popular for its fishing, boating and other attractions. A few miles north of the Last Mountain Lake and still on the R-Y route, is one of the most renowned saline lakes on the continent, Lake Manitou, near the town of Watrous.
