5 WELCOME TO SPLORE! We are a Utah-based not-for-profit outdoor adventure company. Since 1977, we ve been providing lifechanging outdoor adventures for people of all ability levels and walks of life. Our playground includes the beautiful Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, as well as sections of the Colorado and Green Rivers. A Splore trip fosters a love for Utah s beautiful outdoors, promotes connections with new friends, and empowers participants in their everyday lives. You don t have to be an experienced climber or a hardcore river runner; in fact, you don t need any experience at all. We ll make sure to find a trip that is perfect for you. Hope to see you out there! Janine Donald Executive Director (801)
6 OUR PURPOSE We believe that everyone, regardless of ability or income, should have the opportunity to live life to the fullest. We accomplish this through three core tenets. THE SPIRIT OF CONNECTEDNESS The deep-seated need in all of us to connect with those around us in a meaningful way; the joy of being accepted for who you really are. THE MAGIC OF THE OUTDOORS The feeling of inspiration that one feels standing on a mountain top, or feeling the soft breeze through a forest, or watching the stars come out at night. THE DIGNITY OF RISK The self-discovery and empowerment that one feels doing something thrilling that is outside his or her comfort zone. 4
7 Why Utah? Utah is majestic, spacious, and inspiring a landscape filled with fascinating geology and anthropology, natural and human history, as well as some of the most stunning scenery in the world. From raging rivers to alpine vistas, national parks to ski resorts, mountain lakes to desert landscapes, sunny Moab to bustling Salt Lake City, Utah will surprise you with its variety. Let us show you Utah. DIVERSE GEOGRAPHY Spanning 84,904 square miles, Utah is positioned at the crossroads of the southwest and the Rocky Mountains. The land itself encompasses everything from desert to alpine climate zones. THE MIGHTY FIVE Our five national parks are the jewels of Utah s scenic places. Each offers the visitor worldclass scenic panoramas and geological features. These parks feature some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the National Park System. WILDERNESS AREAS Over 900,000 acres of federally designated wilderness in Utah are managed by the Forest Service and the BLM. These areas provide opportunities to enjoy the calm solitude of Utah s wildlands. (801)

13 CATARACT CANYON Cataract Canyon is a great trip for adventure and thrill-seekers. You will see Anasazi art and dwellings, visit little-seen areas of Canyonlands National Park and experience the longest consecutive whitewater section of the Colorado River. Due to permit restrictions, this trip is only open to groups with disabilities and special needs. Difficulty: Advanced Length: 3 or 5 Day options FISHER TOWERS The Fisher Towers section wanders through some of the most spectacular landscape in America. Look forward to relaxing in the sun, swimming in the river, floating through fun rapids, and enjoying beautiful vistas. This is a great trip for families with children, and for those looking for a moderate river adventure. Difficulty: Beginner Length: 1 or 2 Day options GATES OF LODORE The Green River has cut into the Uinta Mountains to form two enormous cliffs on either side of the river. Here are the Gates of Lodore, two 1000-foot cliffs that rise out of the valley. Through these gates you ll pass on your way to great hikes, exciting whitewater, beautiful beaches, and an unforgettable trip. Due to permit restrictions, this trip is only open to groups with disabilities and special needs. Difficulty: Advanced Length: 4 or 5 Day options LABYRINTH CANYON The Green River offers what is considered by many to be the premier calm water canoe and sea kayak trip in America. From the town of Green River, Utah to the confluence with the Colorado River, the Green River flows nearly 120 miles through Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons, tracing the historic route of the explorer Major John Wesley Powell. This trip is great for groups that want to take things slow and enjoy copious hiking opportunities. Difficulty: Intermediate Length: 4 Days, 3 Nights RUBY & HORSETHIEF CANYONS This trip begins in the state of Colorado and is a beautiful, relaxing flatwater stretch ideal for wildlife viewing, side hikes, stand-up paddleboards, and enjoying the company of your trip companions. This is a great section for families or those who do not meet the essential eligibility criteria for a whitewater stretch of river. This trip can be combined with a Westwater trip, depending on availability. Difficulty: Beginner Length: 2 or 3 Day options WESTWATER C ANYON Westwater Canyon is a whitewater jewel. This stretch of the Colorado River has everything from sections of slow moving water which are optimal for wildlife viewing to fast moving whitewater thrills. 17 WINTER ACTIVITIES Snowshoeing & Cross Country Skiing MILLCREEK CANYON Millcreek Canyon lies just north of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It is also home to numerous hiking trails which are great for winter snowshoeing adventures. Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate Length: 4-6 Hours SILVER LAKE At the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, lies Silver Lake. When the snow flies, the area turns into a cross-country ski mecca. Groomed trails and tracks lead into the trees surrounding the lake. There is no better place to enjoy a day out cross-country skiing. Splore can also do snowshoe trips here. Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate Length: 4-6 Hours MOUNTAIN DELL Tucked into Parley s Canyon, Mountain Dell recreation area is a great place for those learning to cross country ski or snowshoe. The Uintas are home to the Bear, Weber and Provo Rivers as well as hundreds of small lakes. It is a year-round camping and recreation destination. Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate Length: 4-6 Hours UINTA MOUNTAIN YURT TRIP Experience the beauty of the Uinta Mountains on this overnight winter adventure. 18 ROCK ON! PROGRAM Rock On! is an 8-week indoor rock climbing program that addresses the social and recreational needs of children with disabilities (and their siblings). Youth, ages 5 17, are paired with volunteer mentors, who are dedicated to ensuring a positive and rewarding climbing experience. Climbers learn about the necessary climbing equipment, hone their climbing technique, work on communication skills and most importantly, have fun. Location: Momentum Climbing Gym in Sandy and Salt Lake City Times: Once a week for eight weeks, typically on Wednesday evenings Who: Youth, age
19 HEAR WHAT IS BEING SAID The rock climbing trip was a great experience for my students. A lot of them were able to conquer some of their fears of height. They had a great time and learned a lot about communicating with each other. Special Educator As a volunteer, I can say that some of the most incredible times I have ever had have been on Splore trips. My life has been influenced a great deal by the amazing staff, other volunteers, and clients I have shared time with. Splore Volunteer I had a really good day today. I want to help other veterans get involved with this. Lots of these guys have come down a really hard road in life, you know? Having a good day like this is just what they need. Veteran Rock Climber Splore genuinely cares for kids and helps them to learn to love the outdoors. The connection with the kids creates amazing things they didn t think were possible. Mother of a child with Autism For that one week of the year, I feel absolutely free. Whitewater Rafting Participant (801)
20 ADAPTIVE RECREATION Splore employs a number of adaptive supports in order to make each trip comfortable and accessible for all participants. The following is a sampling of some of our adaptive equipment. WALKER SKI The walker ski is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoe activities. It is a simple design that involves a regular walker being mounted to a pair of skis. The walker ski is designed for those who need help with balance or stability. ADAPTIVE SEATING Adaptive chairs are used on our rafting and canoeing trips. An adaptive chair is just a picnic chair with the legs removed. It rests flat on the bottom of the canoe or on the boat frame. It is great for persons with limited trunk mobility, balance issues, low endurance, and individuals needing back support, or who tire easily. CHEST HARNESS The chest harness is used for rock climbing activities. The harness has shoulder loops that are put on like a jacket and attached at the center of the chest with a carabineer. It is great for individuals with low muscle tone and those who have difficulty staying balanced or upright. THE GROOVER The groover is a sanitary portable toilet for solid human waste and is used on our overnight trips when no bathroom facilities are available. We have added hand rails to our groover to assist individuals who need extra support transferring from a wheelchair or moving from a sitting to a standing position. 18
