1 VILLAGE OF WOLVERINE LAKE THE VILLAGER 425 GLENGARY, WOLVERINE LAKE, MI SPRING//SUMMER 2017 Hurrah For The Return Of Warm Weather! By John Magee, Village Council President As Spring takes hold, my wife Monique and I find ourselves outside more often and running into neighbors that we haven t seen all winter. Sure, we all try to stay in touch over the winter. And there are plenty of outdoor activities to be found in the snow and on the ice. But we sure do seem to spend a lot more time outside when it s seventy and sunny than when the sleet is blowing in from the north. So this seems a good time to update you all on some of the things we ve been doing in the Village to make sure that we all have as many good opportunities as possible to take advantage of the return of warm weather. Parks: After much public input, discussion and planning we are building out the Amenia Park neighborhood park this Spring. We re excited about the design and excited to bring a new gathering place for children into the south side of our Village. We ve also been doing a good deal of work around the future of the Village s premiere park, Clara Miller Park. We ve had several exciting proposals for ways to enhance the playing fields and to make better use of the full park for the Village. We got great input into these plans from our first public hearing on the park and we re scheduling a second public hearing to present some of the options and to hear more from all of you. Road Endings That Lead to the Lake: Those of you near a road ending have probably already noticed our new signs. We ve put a good deal of effort into clarifying the use of road endings in the Village and in making sure that the rights of all of our residents to access the lake via those road endings is protected. Road endings and subdivision outlots have different rules. It often hasn t been apparent which lots are public road endings. We re hoping the new signs will help to clear up some of the confusion for all of us. Please let us know how it s going. Pathways: We re continuing to work on opportunities to link and expand our pathways. Look for several new connectors coming this year. We also continue to work on our most difficult pathway opportunity, finding safe ways for pedestrians and bicyclists to travel along South Commerce Road. We have a committee that will begin meeting again this Spring to work on this problem. If you d like to participate, please contact the Village Office. The Lake: Our Village s Water Management Board has listened carefully to all the feedback they ve received on the condition of the lake both good and bad and have worked together with our lake consultant to create a lake management plan that should result in more opportunities for all of you to enjoy the lake. The plan focuses on expanded opportunities for harvesting and using herbicides in as narrow and targeted a manner as possible. Our Police Department is continuing to work to make your time on the lake as safe as possible by continuing our lake patrol as usual. But let me also remind you that we are all responsible for keeping our lake safe. Please keep an eye on one another and help each other out while you re on the lake. And if you re new to the lake or haven t taken a Boater s Safety Class in a while, those courses aren t just for kids who want to ride a jet-ski. There are a lot of good reminders for all of us in those courses. Road Construction: Finally well, this isn t a fun outdoor activity, except for the part where you get to gather with your neighbors and grumble a bit about the dust and noise. But you ll see that we re repaving several older and damaged roads this year. I apologize in advance for the inconvenience of the construction, but after this year s projects are complete I hope that all of you who drive those roads will enjoy a pothole-free trip out of the Village. Have a great Spring and Summer, everybody! Reminders: Village Taxes Due August 31st Tiki Night Fireworks Monday, July 3rd No High Speed Boating 7:30 p.m. to 11 a.m. Pump your Septic Tank every 2 to 3 years Yard Waste is collected from the first Tuesday of April until the last Tuesday of November

3 Page 3 SPRING//SUMMER 2017 Protect The Huron River Water Shed The Village of Wolverine Lake is part of the Huron River Watershed. Water runoff that flows into storm drains and roadside ditches all goes to the nearest lake, stream, river or wetland without any kind of treatment. To protect water quality, make sure you do your part to keep pollutants off the land. Pollutants that can impact our waterways include sediment, nutrients, bacteria, pesticides and hazardous chemicals such as grease and oil. Fertilizer and Lake Weeds In 2006 the Village adopted an ordinance to control the application of fertilizer on lakefront lawns, a further step in reducing the impact of runoff from applications of lawn fertilizer on turf containing phosphorous, nitrogen, and other minerals. This results in excessive and accelerated growth of algae and aquat ic plants, wh i ch can 1. Never dump anything down a storm drain. 2. Minimize soil erosion an sedimentation. Stabilize bare soil with seed and mulch, or sod as quickly as possible. 3. Bag it! Pick up pet waste. 4. Get Pumped! Pump your septic tank every 2 to 3 years. 5. Wash Right! Use environmentally safe car wash soaps. negatively impact the lake s eco-system. The ordinance defines the acceptable types and amounts of fertilizers that may be used, the timing and frequency of applications, and sets a 15 foot buffer zone around the edge of the lake or wetland within 6. Properly take care of your lawn. For more environmental information, please visit the V i l l a g e W e b s i t e a t a n d c l i c k o n t h e E n v i r o n m e n t a l Information page under Services. 24 hour Pollution Hot Line # which no fertilizer should be applied. The ordinance also establishes a licensing requirement for commercial and institutional applicators working within the Village. For further information, contact the Village offices at Weed/Grass Ordinance The owner, agent, or occupant of land on which noxious weeds or grass are found growing shall destroy the weeds or grass before they reach seed bearing stage and prevent their re-growth, or shall prevent them from becoming a detriment to public health. Weeds not cut by May 1st of any given year may be cut by the Village, at which point the owner, agent or occupant of the property shall be charged with the cost of service. The Village may cut weeds or grass as many times as it is necessary and charge the cost to the owner, agent, or occupant of the land, and the Village shall have a lien against the land for the amount of the expense. Residents interested in joining a Clean Boats Clean Water Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) is an extremely serious viral disease of fresh and saltwater fish, and we want to keep our lake clean of this devastating disease. There is no known cure for VHS so once it is in our lake, there is no way of getting rid of it. The Department of Public Works (DPW) maintains a boat disinfection station at the DNR boat launch. Boaters are Special Assessment District (SAD) for Sewer Connection should stop in at Village Hall to sign a petition. Joining the SAD allows you to pay most of the connection costs over a 10 year period on your Village property tax bill. Residents who do not participate in a SAD will have to fund connecting to the sewer entirely on their own. encouraged to spray their watercraft prior to launching. Boaters are also asked, after retrieval, to make certain that all areas of their watercraft and trailer are free from any plants, sediment or aquatic life, and to drain live wells and dispose of unwanted bait in the trash. These efforts will help to prevent invasive species from possibly infecting other bodies of water. The estimated standard cost of connecting to the sewer is between $16, and $18, and, for those who are not part of a SAD, all cost must be paid up front. The work is expected to take approximately a year to complete but the Center will remain open during the construction. Commerce Township Library The Commerce Township Library had it s grand opening at it s new location, 180 E. Commerce Road, on January 17, Visit their website, for library hours and information. Tips to Prevent Identity Theft In 2014, the Federal Trade Commission estimated that 17.6 million people had their identities stolen. The Identity Theft Team recommends taking the following steps in a effort to reduce your exposure to financial crime: Order a Copy of Your Credit Report Annually Your credit report contains vital information about you and your financial habits. Review a copy annually for discrepancies that may indicate you have fallen victim to a financial crime. Every American consumer is entitled to a free copy of their credit report once a year. To obtain your free annual copy visit Don t Carry Your Social Security Card in Your Purse or Wallet Place important documents such as social security cards, birth certificates and passports in a safe deposit box or fireproof safe. Only carry these with you when absolutely necessary Lake Management Plan The Water Management Board has put together the 2017 Lake Management Plan. The Plan and Promptly Remove Mail from Your Mailbox Thieves will steal your mail in an attempt to gather personal information. Be sure to have the post office hold your mail if you will be away for an extended period of time. Pay Attention to Your Credit Card Billing Cycles If a bill has not arrived on time, follow up with that company to ensure it was mailed. Missing mail may be an indication that an identity thief has stolen your mail and changed the address on the account. Keep an Eye on Your Credit Cards Think of the number of times in a day you present your credit card to a stranger to complete a transaction. Most transactions are completed in front of you, however, there are times that your card may be taken elsewhere to be processed. It is when your card is out of your sight many other lake related items can be found on the Village website: that an act of skimming may be occurring. Purchase a Shredder Shredding personal information is a major step in the prevention of financial crime. Look for a cross cut shredder, which shreds documents into confetti rather than a strip cut shredder which only shreds into strips, allowing a patient thief to tape the documents back together. Be Cautious of Requests for Information via the Telephone or Internet Thieves will often attempt to obtain your information over the telephone or internet while posing as legitimate companies or government agencies. These con artists may use high pressure sales tactics to convince you to give out personal information. Dog Tags Dog tags are available at Village Hall at regular prices through June 1st. Delinquent fee starts June 2nd. Must supply proof of rabies vaccination and spay/ neutering. Cash or check only, sorry no Credit Cards.
