UNITED FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ASSOCIATIONS INC. AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION UFWDA e-news June 2010 The UFWDA annual meeting has been and gone and thank you for your patience waiting for this delayed edition From my distant view of the UFWDA meeting, it appears to have gone well and with some new faces among the management team there will no doubt be an injection of enthusiasim once the holiday season euphoria fades. One thing trialed this year, was a video link to the meeting using a digital projector to provide a live image of an 'early morning' visage of myself watching on my computer screen, the meeting participants in Traverse City (The time-zone difference had me at 6.00am on a winter's morning and the Michigan meeting at 1.00pm). I was able to talk directly to the meeting and the opportunity was appreciated. The software we trialed was and it offers the option of up to eight online participants. The concept showed distinct promise of being able to engage with some of the more remote delegates etc in the future. The Power of One campaign continues with brief online surveys each month and you can help by going to It will stay open until 15 July. UFWDA have set up another survey too... the major one that we try to run every couple of years to get an idea of the demographics of four wheelers. There's more on that further on in this edition. I'd like to thank Wayne and Trish Groom for their work as volunteers with UFWDA over a period of many years now and Wayne did a great job to help guide UFWDA through the worst of the recent economic downturn. As the 'new' past-president and as a UFWDA ambassador member, I anticipate that Wayne will continue to keep an eye on progress. 2 UFWDA 34 th Annual General Meeting United Four Wheel Drive Associations wrapped up the 34 th Annual General Meeting in Traverse City, Michigan on Wednesday, June 16, The meeting was a great success. Delegates from various regions of the country including the Arizona Four Wheel Drive Association, Great Lakes Four Wheel Drive Association, Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association, Indiana Four Wheel Drive Association, Colorado Four Wheel Drive Association, California Four Wheel Drive Association, Middle Atlantic Four Wheel Drive Association, PA Jeep Association, 4 Lakes 4 Wheelers, Midwest Four Wheel Drive Association, Wisconsin Four Wheel Drive Association and the Mesa Four Wheelers attended the meeting to represent their regional state and local organizations. The first day of the meeting was a discussion of old business and updates on various projects within UFWDA. The second day of the meeting was a discussion on new business within UFWDA. Elections for the Board of Directors positions were held on the second day. UFWDA is pleased to announce the election of a new President. The UFWDA President is now Jim Mazzola. Elections were also held for International Vice President and Director of Membership. The International Vice President is Peter Vahry. Peter was elected as the incumbent. The Membership Director is Clair Kauffman, also as the incumbent. The board then made some necessary appointments to fill the positions that were vacant. Richard Drechsel is now our new Director of Public Relations. Chris Saunders is now the Director of Environmental Affairs and Pat Sheppard is now the Vice President. UFWDA now has a full board for the first time in many years. The entire Board of Directors brings with them many years of experience and a great desire to see UFWDA succeed! WINNERS of some donations from IFWDA, Clair Kaufman, Bob DeVore, Chris Boucher, Bruce Schabeck The location of the 2011 UFWDA 35 th Anniversary AGM location was chosen as well. The UFWDA 35 th Anniversary celebration will be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the Superlift ORV Park. UFWDA will celebrate the 35 th Anniversary next year and is planning a large celebration! Make sure to watch for more details and make plans to attend the AGM and the Wheel-in to follow. On the last evening of the meeting there was a presentation by two representatives of Jeep at Chrysler, Bruce Schabeck and Larry Johnson. The presentation was a historical view of the Jeep and the engineering process. In addition, they gave us an excellent presentation on the J8, which Bruce had a large part in the design and engineering. It was an excellent and exciting presentation is going to be a great year for UFWDA and we are looking forward to great things! Marti Pugh UFWDA Business Pictures Doug Saul
The Power of ONE Campaign continues ONE United Voice ONE Purpose The Power of ONE can make a difference! Each ONE of you makes up the ONE United Four Wheel Drive Associations, whether it is you, ONE association; you, ONE club; or you, ONE individual. There is ONE organization that works for ONE purpose, the purpose of working together united as ONE to make a difference for the ONE group of enthusiasts, the 4x4 community. Each month in 2010, we will offer a new challenge and a new survey to get a better understanding of what we can do to be your unified voice and to demonstrate how ONE person can make a difference when joined together with others. You can sign up for your personal e-news at This month's UFWDA survey can be found at: June - Attend ONE meeting Attend either the UFWDA AGM or your local club or association annual, quarterly, or monthly meeting. We encourage everyone to attend a meeting and find out what is happening in your area. Meetings are a great way to get informed about the next four wheel drive outing, the skinny on the latest and best vehicle modifications, and a place to get to know people who share the same passion for four wheeling. July - ONE letter to your government representative - There are over 4 million off road enthusiasts in the US alone. If we all sent a letter, the impact we can have on legislation is unparalleled. Information on how to find your government officials and how to introduce yourself, will be available on the UFWDA website. August - Attend ONE Trail Ride Event - Get out there and have fun to remember why we all love this sport so much! Never wheel alone! Doing this sport together is one of the hallmarks of responsible four wheeling. Check our website and forum calendar of events for a trail ride near you, or join us at the 3 rd annual UFWDA Wheel-in in West Virginia. September - Attend an education seminar- Find out how to administer CPR, find out proper winch usage, or attend a seminar on land use issues. Use this month to learn something you never knew about wheeling and our community. Clubs in your local area, your state or regional four wheel drive association or UFWDA can help you find something fun and educational. October - Attend ONE clean up- October is the United Four Wheel Drive Associations National Clean up day. Take the time to organize a clean up in your area. Helpful hints and ideas are available at UFWDA to help you, whether it s your 20 th annual clean-up or your first! November - Shop from the 4x4 businesses that support the sport. - It is time for Christmas shopping and what better way to support your sport than by shopping at the 4x4 businesses that support you, the enthusiast. UFWDA has a complete list and rating of 4x4 businesses that give back to the four wheel drive community. December - Give a gift to those in need Within the Four Wheel Drive Community are some of the most caring and generous people. Let us take this time to reflect on all that we have and give to those less fortunate.
UFWDA biennial 4x4 Survey UFWDA has being running major surveys over several years now at two yearly intervals and yes... there is another one that we would really appreciate your involvement with. Although aimed at members, UFWDA welcome wider input from the 4x4 community, so we are happy for the survey link to be circulated. Some questions may not be ideally worded but that's usually because we repeat quite a few questions every time we run this survey, which allows the direct comparison with earlier answers. There are 74 questions but many are simple 'yes/no' style. There are opportunities to be more expansive with some answers. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey, as it can provide some really useful data about our recreation and the people who enjoy four wheeling. NOHVCC FREE DVD IS A POWERFUL TRAIL-BUILDING TOOL Preserving Your Right To Trail Ride! Those are the first words you ll see on the Cheaha Trail Riders web site. When this 230-member organization talks about working to preserve your right to ride, they mean it and they re good at it. They have a lot of tools in their trail-building toolbox. Glenn Myers, president, says one of the most powerful is a free DVD from the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC). That DVD is an excellent piece of work, said Myers. I can only praise everyone at NOHVCC who had a hand in it. It s a great tool. I pass them out to U.S. Forest Service people, dealerships and clubs everywhere I go. I have a handful of them yet to go, then I ll be calling NOHVCC for more. The DVD is titled the Public Land Advocacy Workshops Series DVD. It s designed to be used by clubs, off-road associations and agency land managers, so everyone is working together to build sustainable off-road trails. It was created by the NOHVCC with help from the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA), and the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA), and is being distributed free of charge with help from the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative. Myers was one of the founders of the Cheaha Trail Riders, formed in 1988 by a group of riders that had seen the U.S. Forest Service prohibit motorized recreation in the Talladega National Forest. Today, the organization has a long list of success stories. Its members helped design and develop the Kentuck ORV Trail in the Talladega National Forest, the Doc Hilt Trails near Lineville and the Warfield Point ORV Park near Greenville, Mississippi. If you re trying to save or build new trails, Myers will gladly talk with you. He s been riding off-road for 40 years, and is one of the most active advocates for trail riders not only in Alabama, but across the country. He served on the NOHVCC Board of Directors for many years, retired as a State Partner in 2009 but is still an Association Partner. He s also active with the Alabama 4-H ATV Safety program and is an AMA field representative. I m sort of a national instigator, he said. In addition to the DVD, Myers toolbox includes tactics in presentations to local politicians, state economic impact studies that show the positive impact off-road riders have on local economies, and a strong focus on creating and maintaining partnerships. We ve been involved with the Forest Service for 22 years. Each time they change personnel we meet with them. Often, they don t know what can and can t be done in the forest with regards to motorized vehicles, said Myers.
A free DVD on trail building was created by NOHVCC and is being distributed free of charge with help from the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative. The DVD has 14 chapters, ranging in length from 7 to 33 minutes each. It uses a combination of riding footage, still photographs and a powerpoint presentation to cover a wide range of topics, including: understanding the agency designation process, how to get involved and save trails, and how to plan, design, manage and maintain trail systems. It also shows proper signing techniques and outlines how to work with land managers. The chapter titled Success Stories highlights four of the country s best off-road trail systems -- the Paiute ATV Trail in Utah, the Rock Run Recreation Area in Pennsylvania, the Hatfield-McCoy Trails in West Virginia, and the Highwood Mountains Trail System in Montana. All four were designed, planned, constructed and maintained using the management techniques from NOHVCC workshops. Much of the same information used at those workshops is included on the new DVD, allowing more clubs and agencies to learn from it and put it to work in their local areas. The DVD was released in late 2009, and was developed in cooperation with the American Motorcyclist Association, BlueRibbon Coalition, MIC, Off-Road Business Association, SVIA, and United Four Wheel Drive Associations. The Cheaha Trail Riders call their group an organization rather than a club, because their first priority is being OHV advocates; promoting the development of OHV trail systems throughout Alabama and the U.S. Leading the charge, DVDs in hand, is Glenn Myers. To order copies of the new DVD for yourself, your club or agency trail planners in your area, send an to trailhead@nohvcc.org or call NOHVCC is also able to do webinars on trail building that are customized for individual off-road clubs. For information and more trail-building tools, go to David Halsey press@nohvcc.org Check out the DVD offer at Climategate... a book to read

UFWDA award winners for 2010 Congratulations to Four Wheeler of the Year - Chris Boucher Virginia Environmental Four Wheeler of the Year - Steve Walker - Drummond Island Drummond Offroad Adventure August It's an event held every year (well almost) since The event has evolved over the years as some trails have been given and taken from legal ORV usage. We divide up into groups, and head out on the trail. Saturday evening there is a banquet held where door prizes are given out, awards are given, great food is eaten, and stories of the days events and events past are told. Come join us at DOA 2010 to see for yourself! BFGoodrich will be awarding Drummond Island ORV Routes, the Outstanding Trails 2010 award. Join us in the celebration as we acknowledge the many fine people that made the DI ORV routes a reality! Idaho Wilderness Bill Threatens to Close Off-Road Trails A bill introduced in the U.S. Senate to create a large, new wilderness reserve in central Idaho has been endorsed by the Obama administration. The legislation threatens to designate nearly 330,000 acres of land in central Idaho as wilderness, the most restrictive designation that can be placed on public lands. SEMA opposes the legislation as drafted since many off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails in the Sawtooth and Challis National Forests could be closed as a result of its passage.
