1 Dear Appleby Summer ESL Students, Let me begin by welcoming you to the first ever Summer ESL Program Northward Bound Canoe Adventure! We are all excited to have you with us this summer and are so happy that you ll be joining us for this incredible adventure. We have put together an information package that will be helpful in your preparation for your trip in July. The focus of our trips are to provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about themselves, the others in their group and the pristine Canadian wilderness surrounding them while packing in as much fun as possible. Throughout the trip, you will receive instruction in a variety of wilderness skills, including canoeing, wilderness navigation (with map and compass), outdoor cooking and camping. During the canoe trip portion of the program the group of students will be divided into groups of 10, both to abide by Ontario Provincial Park camping guidelines and to ensure proper supervision of students. Each group of 10 students will be led by two trained and experienced outdoor guides, one male and one female. The information sheet, detailed schedule and packing list are listed on the following pages. Please read carefully as it outlines the complete details of the trip. 2 Philosophy It is our belief that we all need to spend more time outside. It is our belief that life should be more fun. It is our belief that everyone should experience Temagami in a canoe. This canoe adventure gives you the opportunity to spend more time outside, to have more fun and to experience one of the most picturesque locations for canoeing and camping in Canada. Transportation On the day of departure, buses will leave Appleby College at 8:00 a.m. Accompanying staff/guides will ensure that all students are on board. Meals Food has been arranged and is delivered to the base camp prior to the trip. All dietary needs and restrictions are taken into consideration and we are extremely careful and diligent in regards to food and meal preparation. Please make sure all diet information is up to date with the ESL office. Communication All groups on outings away from Rabbit Nose Island will have satellite telephones. If there is an emergency at home, please notify the ESL office at ext. 118, and personnel there will then get in touch with the team in Temagami. Safety Safety comes first and is our number one priority over all other considerations. While on outings, guides will ensure groups remain together and students take proper food and water intake. It is our policy that all guides and students will wear life jackets at all times while on the water. Emergency Action Plan The local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and ambulance services are notified of all dates when our canoe adventure is in session. This ensures the most expedient action possible if an emergency does arise. The First Response Team, a local search and rescue group, is also notified when trip is in session. Additionally, an air ambulance based in Sudbury is available if necessary. All of these services are accessible through one central emergency phone number. This number, along with all other emergency numbers, is posted by the telephones in the main lodge, in the first aid room and with each sub-groups satellite phone. If necessary, the closest hospitals are in New Liskeard (approx. 50 minutes) and North Bay (approx. 1 hour). P a g e 2 5

3 Itinerary for the 2015 Northward Bound Canoe Adventure: July 26 - August 1, 2015 Day 1 Sunday July 26 - On Campus at Appleby College Day 1 of the program is spent on campus at Appleby, with all meals eaten on campus. Students are introduced to their guides and to each other. Team building and ice-breaker games are played and swim tests conducted for all participants. During the day students are paid a visit by a local outdoor outfitting company who will come equipped to outfit the students with the appropriate gear for the trip. Students will be responsible for purchasing gear that they require (approx. $150) Classroom time and ESL instruction takes place throughout the day focusing on new/trip-centric language acquisition. 5 Personal Equipment Packing Checklist Hat(s) Essential for keeping the sun off in hot weather and conversely keeping the warmth in during cold nights Outer jacket (1) A lightweight, waterproof jacket is ideal. Avoid heavy materials such as cotton Sweaters (1-2) The nights do get cool - as might the days *Rain gear (1) We cannot stress the importance of good rain gear. Both jacket and pants are a must. *Socks (4-5 pairs for 7-day experience) 100% wool is best. Gym socks or other cotton socks are NOT recommended as they will NOT be warm enough *Shoes/hiking boots (2 pairs) A comfortable pair for indoors at the lodge and a pair for canoeing/portaging - good ankle support is necessary. Shirts (T s and long sleeve, 4-6 for 5-day experience) Old long-sleeved dress shirts work well for paddling. Pants/shorts (3 pairs of each) Comfortable pants - loose fitting, ideally NOT denim Bathing suit/towel (for sauna) Sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 30 min, and SPF-15 lip balm Underwear as needed for duration of trip Wide mouth water bottle Toiletries as needed All Paddles, Packs, Life Jackets are provided and will be distributed at the Island. *If you do not have these items with you in Canada, they can be purchased from the outdoor outfitter on the first day of the program Be sure to leave all electronic devices and junk food at home.
