In a recent survey of alumni, many chose the McLaughlin Northern Campus and Temagami as something they enjoyed most about their time at Appleby. Now is your opportunity to relive the adventure and join Appleby alumni, alumni parents, former faculty and friends on a 3-day canoe trip on the lakes and rivers of Temagami. The trip will run from Wednesday, July 3 to Sunday, July 7. Three days will be spent on excursion and two days spent at camp. This information package includes complete details for the trip including the proposed itinerary. Anyone considering taking part should read the documentation carefully. 2 General Trip Overview The offices of Alumni Relations and Outdoor Education at Appleby College are coming together to organize a canoe trip to the school s McLaughlin Northern Campus in Temagami, Ontario for interested alumni, alumni parents, former faculty and their partners. The trip will require participants to have basic level canoeing skills and a willingness to camp and cook outdoors. The trip will be five days in length incorporating an excursion consisting of three days and two nights. Accommodations On the first and fourth night of the trip participants will sleep in cabins at the McLaughlin Northern Campus. On the second and third night, participants will sleep in tents. Participants may bring their own tents or they will be provided for them. Gear To ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for all, a PERSONAL GEAR GUIDELINE has been developed and is included on page 5 of this package. It is imperative that these guidelines are followed and that participants come properly equipped. Please try to pack equipment in one large pack or bag (i.e. hockey bag). If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Doug Stamper or Caitlin Ford. Contact information for both can be found on page 6. Meals All meals will be coordinated by Appleby College. If you have any dietary needs and/or restrictions, please include this information on your registration form. All participants will be expected to assist with the preparation and clean up of all meals. Due to the nature and location of this trip, there is a no alcohol policy. Safety comes first and is priority over all other considerations. Transportation Participants will be responsible for their own transportation to Lake Temagami and MUST arrive at Boatline Bay Marina by 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, The ferry to Rabbit Nose Island will depart at 2:30 p.m. Sharp. Carpooling is definitely encouraged and will be supported by the Alumni Relations Office. If you are interested in carpooling, please contact Esther Kim, Community Life Liaison. Contact information for Esther can be found on page 6. The approximate travel time to Temagami from Appleby College is 5 hours, 35 minutes (464 km). If you are travelling independently, please plan your departure from Oakville accordingly. Trip Leaders and Accompanying Faculty The Alumni Canoe Trip will be supervised by Doug Stamper, Director, Outdoor Education. Other faculty and former faculty including Mr. Denis Desrosiers and Dr. Michael Peirce also plan to attend.

3 Participant Registration & Fee Participants may register and pay their registration fee online at The fee per participant is $120. A participant s registration is not final until online registration is complete and payment is received. These statistics and the current local forecast for Temagami are available online at Average High 25.2 ºC Average Low 13.4 ºC Average 19.3 ºC Record Daily High 40 ºC Date Recorded July 6, 1921 Record Daily Low -1.1 ºC Date Recorded July 10, 1945 Emergency Action Plan The local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ambulance services are notified of all dates when the Northward Bound Program is in session. This ensures the most expedient action possible if an emergency does arise. The First Response Team, a local search and rescue group, is also notified when groups are using Appleby s McLaughlin Northern Campus. In the case of an emergency, the OPP, Ambulance and First Response Team are all equipped to reach Rabbit Nose Island within 45 minutes. Additionally, an air ambulance based in Sudbury is available if necessary. All of these services and measures are accessible through one central emergency telephone number. This number, along with all other emergency numbers, is posted by the telephones in the main lodge, in the First Aid Room and with each sub-group s satellite phone. If necessary, the closest hospitals are in New Liskeard (approximately 50 minutes) and North Bay (approximately 1 hour). Communication All groups on outings away from Rabbit Nose Island will be in possession of satellite telephones. The phone number at Temagami is This number is not to be given out indiscriminately. If there is an emergency at home, please notify Caitlin Ford at ext. 131 or by at cford@appleby.on.ca. Safety As previously stated, safety comes first and is priority over all other considerations. While on outings, Trip Leaders will ensure our group stays together. Proper food and water will be provided. Life jackets will be worn at all times on the water.

(recommendation) 2:00 p.m. Arrive at Lake Temagami, public dock. 2:30 p.m. Shuttle to Rabbit Nose Island. 5:30 p.m. Welcome and participant briefing. 6:30 p.m. Dinner followed by group clean-up. Thursday, July 4, 2013: DAY 2 7:45 a.m. Breakfast followed by group clean-up. 9:00 a.m. Final check of all gear. 9:30 a.m. Head out for three days and two nights of camping adventures! 5:30 p.m. Breakfast followed by group clean-up. Friday, July 5, 2013: DAY 3: ON EXCURSION Saturday, July 6, 2013: DAY 4 Morning On excursion. 2:00 p.m. Return to Rabbit Nose Island. 2:15 p.m. Unpack all personal gear. Clean and return equipment. 5:30 p.m. Breakfast followed by group clean-up. Sunday, July 7, 2013: DAY 5 7:45 a.m. Breakfast followed by group clean-up. 8:45 a.m. Pack all personal gear and clean cabins, final cleaning of island and buildings. 11:00 a.m. Lunch 12:00 p.m. Depart for public dock. 2:00 p.m. Return to Oakville.

5 Personal Equipment Guide It is essential that all participants are well prepared for the trip. Please make sure you have all of the following items. Item Quantity Description Hat 2 Essential for keeping the sun off in hot weather and conversely keeping the warmth in during cold days. Jacket 1 A lightweight gortex (waterproof ) jacket is recommended. Sweaters 1-2 Rain Gear 1 Good rain gear, both top and bottom, is ESSENTIAL. Socks 3-4 pairs 100% wool is best. Gym socks or other cotton varieties are not recommended. Sleeping Bag 1 May be rented from the school. A compact synthetic bag is ideal. Shoes/Hiking Boots 2 pairs A comfortable pair for indoors at the lodge and a pair for canoeing/ portaging - good ankle support necessary. Shirts 4-6 T-shirts and long sleeves. Long sleeves may be critical to keep the bugs off. Pants 3 pairs Comfortable pants - loose fitting, ideally not denim. Shorts 2 pairs Bathing Suit/Towel 1 For sauna (optional) and swimming in the lake. Bug Repellent Flashlight and Extra Batteries Sunglasses Sunscreen SPF-15 Lip Balm Camera (optional)
