1 The Varyx Obelisk by xarax (Jeffrey D Smith) April 2001 Note: This mission randomizes the location of a lot of keys, hopefully this walkthrough is less complicated to understand than it was to write. Note: You are advised to play this mission without any mods installed (especially NecroAge mod) as a couple of the keys are almost impossible to see otherwise. Objectives # Find the red book to learn the secret of The Menace. # Do not kill any humans. (professional & virtuoso) # Find the legendary sword Black Blade. (professional & virtuoso) Hidden Objectives # Learn where the portals lead and what they protect. # Do not kill any sentinels nor their minions. (professional) # Do not harm any sentinels nor their minions. (virtuoso) # Obtain the Mystic Soul. # Obtain the Mystic Heart. Difficulty settings Ruffian...Both sword & blackjack at start Professional...No sword at start Virtuoso...No sword or blackjack at start Walkthrough Town: There is nothing in the town to collect apart from a purse off one of the guards, at the far end of the town pick the metal door (secure access tunnel) and make your way to a garden and head into the Keeper's Hall. Keeper's Hall: Note the X on the floor in the 3rd room from the entrance to the Keepers building and the Lothronien glyph on the wall in the next room. Head up the steps on the other side of the Astrochart room and opposite a locked metal door you will see a secret door that opens when you move close enough to it. Head north (right) into the back alley area. Back Alley: Sneak past the static guard and go into the store house behind him, (The Store House Key is on the guard on ruffian & professional). Make your way into the furthest room, use 2 crates or shoot a rope arrow up into the wooden ceiling to collect the Control Room Key from the footlocker. Control room: Now go back to the second room after the laboratory and find the X on the floor, you will hear Garrett mumbling Mmm... Whenever you hear Garrett saying this you are beside a secret door, crouch and go through a secret Keeper's wall panel (secret found). Enter the control room, pull the big lever and receive an on-screen message 'door enabled'. Go back to the Keeper Hall and into the next room, the one before the laboratory, find the glyph on the wall that says Lothronien Junction on the left hand wall and walk towards the wall just to the right of the glyph, another secret door opens. New Objective: Learn where the portals lead and what they protect. New Objective: Do not kill any sentinels nor their minions. (Professional) or Do not harm any sentinels nor their minions. (Virtuoso) Collect the Sub-Basement Key off the right hand pedestal. Note: The key is almost impossible to see when playing with NecroAge mod installed Now head back to the control room and enter the basement via the door next to the control room.

2 Basement: The basement door lockbox is pickable, but you may have already found the key. The key's location is randomizied and can be found in 1 of 4 locations: Possible Basement Door key locations...see below w/t for screenshots On the well by the lamppost in the garden. In a wall niche in the first room of the Keeper Hall. On the table in the Astrochart room. On the shelf in the control room. Go to down the slope to the bottom, where you may be able to collect your sword (professional & virtuoso only) however again this sword's location is randomized and may not be there. Pull the big lever, you'll hear a portcullis open. Outside this room mantle up into the crawl space just before the doorway and make your way through to a room with big lever, leave the big lever alone for the moment and take the elevator down and find a door giving access to the Ward of Air / Talisman of Air area. Ward of Air area: Open the metal door with the Sub-Basement Key (lockbox) In this area you need to find 3 keys a Stone Portal key, The Ward of Air room key and the Talisman of Air. The spider (Stella) can hear the door when you open it and there are mushrooms you can frob. You need to find 2 rooms beyond the first area, one to the north beyond a mummified body and one to the south, there's also a lower lever (ladder opposite south room). The Stone Portal key's location is randomized and may be found in 1 of 4 locations in this area. 1. North wall Niche in wall in first room you entered. 2. On the table in north room. 3. In the wall niche opposite the entrance to the north room. 4. In one of the wall niches in the lowest level. The Talisman of Air is in the safe under the shelf in the north room & the Ward of Air room key is on the shelf in the south room. Note: You may find one of your objectives, The Red Book (1/4 location) next to the mummified body, again a randomizied location, of which there are 3 other locations for this book...see below w/t for screenshots of all 4 locations Once you have got all 3 keys go back up to the elevator and now pull the Big Lever, this activates another Keeper's secret door that you will find just outside this room, head through the now activated secret door to find your back in the back alley, re-enter the Keeper's Hall via the other secret door, go through the metal door opposite to find the Ward of Air room. Enter and place the Talisman of Air in the Ward of Air lock to unlock the Ward and receive an award of a gas arrow. Portal: Now head back to the room where you found the Sub-basement key, the room that has a glyph saying Lothronien junction outside. Use the Stone Portal Key on the Stone key shaped lock to the right of the portal to activate the portal.

3 On the other side you find your in a room which has 4 portals numbered 1-4, this is known as the Lothronien junction. You have just come from Eldevir (1) the others are Daitillian (2), Viowen (3) and Anartillian (4). You need to go through each of these 3 new area's to find another set of keys...a Ward key, a Talisman and a Stone Portal key. Ward of Fire / Daitillian - Lothgoryn Nemis: First go straight ahead (not up the stairs) collect various power ups from the wall niches and go through a metal door. Here you will find 2 doors, Ward of Fire room & Talisman of Fire room, as well as a locked sewer hatch. First find the crawl space in the NE corner and drop down. Find the east ladder and grab the Oubliette key from a wall niche at the bottom of the ladder (again a randomized key location so may not be there) then get to the west ladder, pull the lever in the wall niche at the bottom of the ladder to open the sewer hatch and get back up to the previous area. Next mantle up into the crawl space east of the sewer hatch and drop down the hole on the left by the skeleton, take the Ward of Fire Room Key off the Fire Sentinel. Sneak round to the right (east), crouch and enter another hidden room straight ahead of you (secret), pull the lever up in the left (north) wall niche that opens 2 portcullis' (one opposite where you dropped down, the other to the right of where you find the Stone Portal key). In the south wall niche you may find the Oubliette key, the other randomized location of this key. Leave this secret room, go straight ahead and grab the Stone Portal Key out of a wall niche in front of you. Duck into the crawl space on your right (if the portcullis is still shut re-frob the lever in the secret room) to possibly collect the Talisman of Fire (again randomized location) or possibly some other power up. Now head back to where you dropped down into this area turn left, where you may find Talisman of Fire Key on the table (location 2) and go up the ladder to the Oubliette room where you may find the Black Blade Sword on the floor under the shutter windows (1/2 randomizied location). Note: On Ruffian (easy) there is a big lever by the drop down to the Fire Sentinel, a button in the crawl space where you dropped down and a jumper switch in the south wall niche in the hidden Keeper Room, where you may have found the Oubliette Key. Pull the big lever and then the switch in the secret room and when you press the button in the crawl space you can shoot fire bolts at the Fire Sentinel killing him. If you run out of fire bolts you will have to re-pull both the big lever and the jumper switch.

4 Head back to the Fire Sentinel, pick the lockbox on the wall beside the metal door to escape this area. Use the Ward of Fire Room Key on the door opposite the sewer hatch and the Talisman of Fire Key on the Ward lock to unlock it and collect a fire arrow as your reward. Now mantle back up to the crawl space opposite, frob the wall lever in the wall niche on the other side to open the portcullis (portcullis not there on ruffian) to find your at the top of the stairs. By the burning skeleton you may well find the Red Book of Menace (2/4 location). Head back to entrance area and use the Portal key to get back to Lothronien junction. Back at the junction, note the blue dotted line of light connecting the Daitillian portal and the central obelisk. Ward of Fire randomized locations Talisman of Fire Key In crawl space to right of where you find the Keeper key. On shelf in room where you climb the ladder to get to the Oubliette room. Oubliette key East wall niche by ladder in lower level. South wall niche in secret room. Red Book By mummified body at top of stairs BlackBlade In Oubliette room Ward of Earth / Viowen - Eastern Ward First follow the guard into the barrel room, there's another secret hidden room in SW corner for some loot, then collect the Stone Portal Key off the top of the beam in the east corner. Upstairs the door may or may not be locked, if it is the key will be on the guard downstairs, but the door can be picked anyway. This is Keeper Turian's house, upstairs in the office you may find The Black Blade Sword leaning up against the bookcase (2/2 locations). In the bedroom off the large room you'll find a blackjack in one of the footlockers. In the large room rope arrow up through the hole in the ceiling, where you'll find the Attic and the Talisman of Earth Key in a footlocker. You may also find a regular sword up in the attic if you have not already found one. Exit the house via the room opposite where you came in, collect a key off a guard outside (or pick the lockbox) to access the Ward of Earth Sentinel's area. Get past the Crayman find the Hidden room in the SE corner to collect the Ward of Earth room Key, pull the lever in the wall niche opposite to open the portcullis where you dropped down from the flies. Mantle back up and drop down the other side to find a Bugbeast protecting the Ward of Earth room. When you put the Talisman in the ward the portcullis shuts, so pull the lever in the crawl space outside where the Bugbeast is patrolling to re-open the portcullis. You may also find the Red Book of Menace here (3/4 location). Head back to Lothronien junction. Ward of Water / Anartillian. Morthril Daewen: Enter and go left up the steps, go through the secret door, at the end of passage where you can mantle up to left or right. Going right (south) first, avoid the fire bolts, mantle up, avoid the Fire Sentinel. There's a big room on the right protected by a Fire Elemental (only when playing on virtuoso) but first go straight on, through another secret door where you'll find the Stone Portal Key in wall niche half way up the slope. In the big room with the Fire Elemental (or Fire Sentinel on professional), collect some nuggets off the floor, on virtuoso pull the big lever in right hand corner to open a portcullis (this gate is already open in ruffian and professional) in left hand area to access a spider tunnel for some loot and possibly the Black Blade Sword (3/3) also collect a Copper Key from a metal shelf in left hand area.

5 Now go back to where you first mantled up, where I said go right first. Now mantle up to the left (north) and go through a metal door into a room with a work bench on the right. Follow the left side passageway and mantle up in the NE corner, pull the lever in the wall niche, then mantle back out and go through the now open portcullis back in the room with the table. Drop down, take the Ward of Water Room Key off the Fire Sentinel and quickly duck into the crawl space in the east wall. Go north for a chest and possibly the Red Book of Menace (4/4 locations) before heading into the east room to collect the Talisman of Water which is on the shelf, but DO NOT pick up the Talisman yet if you are playing on professional or virtuoso as the Talisman of Water is bobby trapped (it's not bobby trapped when playing ruffian) which triggers fire balls to start cascading around the previous rooms when you pick up the Talisman of Water. To remove the trap you need unlock the lockbox to the right of the shelf on the east wall to get to a big lever, the lockbox is unlocked with the key that you found on the shelf in the Fire Elemental room back in the west part of the Ward of Water area, you can however pick the lockbox, but you still need to turn off 1 or 2 jumper switches depending on whether you are playing on profesional or virtuoso. If you found not yet frobbed any of the jumper switches in the western part of the Ward of Water map head back there and frob any jumper switches you can find (they need to be in the up position or frobbed to the right), according to Dromed there are 5 different locations that you may find the switches (again these jumper switches are randomized), when playing on professional you need only find one switch but on virtuoso you need to find 2 switches, once found and switched off return to the Talisman of water room. South niche in square room with fire bolts of south area In the wall niche opposite the purple vase in the spider tunnel Behind the metal hatch in the room beyond slope in the hidden Keeper Room On the east wall opposite the shelf where you found the copper key In the wall niche on the west side of the central pillar where you mantled up from the fire bolt trap room (you find the diamond in the north niche and a moss arrow in the south niche) Of note I have played this game far too many times to count and have never found the jumper switch in this wall niche but according to Dromed this is one of the randomized locations. Also it would appear that when playing on virtuoso you will almost always find the switches in the locations of the first 2 screenshots, only when playing on professional does the (single) jumper switch location seem to change, but that may just be a co-incidence

6 Back in the Water Talisman room unlock the lockbox then mantle back to the room above the Fire Sentinel and go through the now open crawl space in the north wall and pull the big lever to fully de-activate the booby trap, if done correctly you will hear a sound like a generator powering down and Garrett will say Now for the Talisman. Return to the Talisman and collect it. The Talisman of Water is not bobby trapped on ruffian, on professional & virtuoso if you have dis-abled the booby trap you'll be fine, if not as said earlier fire bolts will be triggered in the proceding rooms, however with care they are all easily avoided. Once you have the Talisman of Water, head into the south room next to the Talisman of Water room, to pull the lever up on the east wall to open the exit portcullis, this may or may not have closed behind you earlier, it closes the space you mantled up to get to the Fire Sentinel room (there's a fire bolt trap in the tunnel). Head back to where you came in from Lothronien junction and go down to the right from the entrance to find the Ward of Water room, use the Water Talisman on the Ward to get Objective Complete: Learn where the portals lead and what they protect. New Objective: Obtain the Mystic Soul. New Objective: Obtain the Mystic Heart. Mystic Treasure room: Now head back to Lothronien junction and collect the Treasury key from the central obelisk structure. Go back to Eldevir (use portal 1) and back to the first room of the Keeper Hall to the locked wooden door in the first room you entered from the city, use the Treasury Key to unlock it. Go right to find the last hidden Keeper room, pull the big lever, this disables a bobby trap that would instantly kill you when you enter the Mystic Treasure Room otherwise. Head back to the entrance door and round to Mystic Treasure room, use the treasury key on the lockbox, enter and grab out of the 2 stone structures the purple stone and the red stone, and the mission will abruptly finish. Objective Complete: Obtain the Mystic Soul. Objective Complete: Obtain the Mystic Heart. Mission Complete
