Our activities include: Monthly Sunday walks throughout the year Weekend meets and an annual May Week Weekly rock climbing training in Summer, depending on demand Subsidised training opportunities Invited speakers at our Autumn/Winter indoor meets GROUP WALKS A variety of routes, of differing levels of difficulty, are available depending on capability and wishes of the group. Members are encouraged to plan their own routes and we only ask that details are left with other members out walking. TRANSPORT Meet at the Market Square for departure at 7am. Costs is kept to a minimum by car sharing. Bus transport is occasionally organised to walking areas where there are sufficient numbers. For this reason, members should ensure that they confirm attendance with the Outdoor Secretary by the Monday prior to an outing. Bikes are an option for quicker access to certain hills. THURSDAY CLUB MEETS 2016 Thursday night slide shows and a variety of talks from 8pm at the Royal Hotel, Stonehaven. An will be sent to remind members of what s on JAN 28th - Liz and Mike Gray (club members) Motorcycling in India Slide show and talk. FEB 26th - Luke Robertson, Solo Expedition South Pole, Slide show and talk. MAR 31st - AGM, members slides can be shown, please let Alistair know in advance. JAN - BURNS SUPPER 2

3 DAY MEETS st February - Lochnagar & High Tea at Station Hotel (Map 44, Grid Ref ) Lochnagar is the name of a crater in the Somme valley created by a massive mine explosion during the 1st world war. The peak also lends its name to the poem by Lord Byron and the song based on it. It s located on Royal Balmoral and the mountain has Royal links as its the setting of the childrens story The Old Man of Lochnagar, written by Prince Charles and also the film Mrs Brown, John Brown being played by Billy Connolly. They hiked up Lochnagar to discuss the need for her to return to active involvement with the government. The translation of Lochnagar: Little Loch of the Noisy Sound or Mountain Breasts alternative Gaelic name is Beinn Chiochan. Its summit is Cac Carn Beag: Small Cairn of Faeces. We will be going to the Station Hotel for a High Tea after we have completed the walk. More than welcome just let us know if you are coming so we can book suitable number of seats. 26th February 2016 Indoor Meet Trekking the South Pole A Friday night in the Station Hotel, Stonehaven. Former Stonehaven resident, Luke Robertson, has completed a solo odyssey to the South Pole unassisted, the 1st Scot to achieve this unsupported in -50c temperatures and after battling a horrendous illness; he s raised an excessive amount for Marie Curie Trust. 17th April 2016 Glenshee (Map 43, Grid Ref ) The opportunities are numerous, especially using the elevation of the Ski Centre (650m). Numerous hills West and East side of the A93 can be climbed. Glas Maol, Creag Leacach, Carn an Tuirc, Carn Aosda, Cairnwell, Carn na Sac, Carn a Gheoidh. A few good rounds can be accomplished. 22nd May 2016 Glen Moy (Map 44/45, Grid Ref ) This glen is next to glen Clova and you can start walking from there at (373653), a car parking area on the B955, the right hand Clova Road. Quite a few tops to cover Manywee (685m), Firmbacks (756m), Craigthran (550m), total ascent over (914m) or (3000ft), some on tracks and paths. 17th July 2016 Ben Rinnes (Map 28, Grid Ref ) Ben Rinnes is a fine isolated hill situated to the south west of Dufftown. Its distinctive conical shape can be seen from many parts of the Grampians. Ben Rinnes 541m of ascent in the heart of Moray standing at a height of 841m and to make a days walk of it, including Meikle Conval 571m on the opposite side of the road or a wee explore at the Scurran of Well. From Baby Hill cut east and catch the track and circuit round the hill back to starting point. 21st August 2016 Tomintoul (Map 36/37, Grid Ref ) As the highest village in Scotland, its a great starting point for many hills, Munros or Grahams. North along the Strath Avon lie the hills of Cromdale, where reindeer can often be seen on the high tops. A bike is most useful to follow the Avon South to Inchrory, where Ben Avon can be tackled from a more interesting approach. 3

4 16th October 2016 Birse Castle Finzean over By the Fungle to Aboyne (Map 44, Grid Ref ) It is proposed that we walk from Birse Castle Finzean to Aboyne, 19km (790m) ascent. A number of routes are available but it might be possible to head south first, then north by the Firmouth over Tampie and Gannoch to Glen Tanar visitor centre or somehow make our way to the Boat Inn. 11th December 2016 Mount Blair & Duchray Hill (Map 43, Grid Ref & ) Mount Blairs prominent cone stands out between Glen Shee and Glen Isla, Duchray Hill lies 4km to the north of Mount Blair across the B951. Splendid views possible on a good clear day from the massive summit cairn and triangulation pillar. Climbed from the high point in the road, both can make a great days walking; Mount Blair has much history connected with it and a suicides grave is reputed to be under the prehistoric cairn. 11km and (720m) of ascent. WEEKEND MEETS rd/24th January Rucksacks, Braemar - Club s Annual Burns Supper (Map 43) Rucksacks Hostel, 15 Mar Road, Braemar, AB35 5YL. Telephone Please bring your own sleeping bag as not all beds have bed linen. Bed linen will be provided on a first come first served basis. 18th/19th March Aultguish Bunkhouse Near Ullapool (Grid Ref ) Aultguish Inn, Rosshire, IV23 2PQ. Situated right in the heart of the Highlands at the foot of Loch Glascarnoch on the A835 between Inverness and Ullapool. The Aultguish Inn is only a 45-minute drive from Inverness. A good quality bunk house sleeping up to 38 people, set in beautiful North West Highland wilderness with a variety of rooms to suit all budgets. Great kitchen, dining room and lounge. The bunkhouse has central heating throughout and plenty of hot water. Located close to Ullapool and only 35 miles from Inverness, the bunkhouse is an ideal base for the many North West hills and a rest stop for those touring the North of Scotland. For more information on the bunkhouse, please call Lesley or Dario on:+ 44 (0) th April to 7th May May Week 2016 Inchnadamph (Map 15) Located in the spectacular Inverpolly nature reserve, this area affords access to numerous wonderful hills, many of which are relatively small in stature but huge in character. Inchnadamph Lodge provides bunkhouse style accommodation plus a number of chalets. 12 places have been booked. Please contact Alistair Beeley to book your bed. 4

Breakfast available for 3.50 Cost pppn 16th to 18th September 2016 Grandtully Hostel (Map 52, Grid Ref ) pppn in twin or triple bedded rooms with en-suites and on a self-catering basis. There is a fully equipped kitchen and use of a drying room / dining room / TV lounge with sofas and car parking. The Tariff includes; all bedding, fitted sheets / duvets etc, you need to bring your own towels. Also cleaning cloths / sprays, loo rolls, tea towels are provided along with the electric and water supplies. Munro Bagging and Hill Walking; situated close to Ben Lawers (1214m) / Schiehallion (1083m) / Beinn Ghlass (1103m) / Carn Mairg (1041m) to the west of us and to the north east are Carn Liath (975m) and Beinn a`ghio (1121m), to name a few. Update Only 6 spaces left so book now to avoid disappointment! 18th to 20th November 2016 Ochils Club Hut Crianlarich (Map 50, Grid Ref ) A well appointed hut, recently refurbished, about a mile east of Crianlarich on the A85 and adjacent the Ben More Restaurant Bar and Restaurant. Access to numerous hills. Munros, Corbetts and Grahams alike, with Ben More and Stob Binien on the doorstep. Cost is likely to be around 9.00 pppn but will depend on numbers. You will need your sleeping bag and a pillow. Great food in the Ben More. 5

6 BOOKING WEEKEND MEETS Places on weekends are only confirmed once your booking form and a deposit of 10 for weekends has been received. SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscriptions are due immediately after each AGM (held on the last Thursday in March) and currently stand at GOLDEN BOOT AWARD Remember there s still a chance to compete for the Golden Boot Award which goes to the person who attends the most Sunday Club Meets from AGM to AGM. 6

7 BOOKING FORM - WEEKENDS AND MAY DAY WEEK Conditions of Booking 1. In order to book a place on either a weekend or May week you should complete the form below and send it to the meets organiser together with your deposit (or full fee, this makes it much simpler for all especially for weekend meets). Deposit for a weekend meet is per person Deposit for May Week is per person 2. You must have paid in full before the closing date (see section 3) as this will allow the organiser to enjoy their weekend free from security concerns regarding the cash collected. 3. If subsequently you wish to cancel you must do so as soon as possible with the meets organiser in order to reduce the potential loss to yourself. The booking list will close one month before the weekend meet and two months before the May Week. You must book before the closing dates. 4. If the booking list is full, a waiting list will be maintained. 5. After the closing date you are responsible for the full cost of your booking and if you cancel you will get back whatever the hostel owner allows. If there is a waiting list it may be possible to sell on your place. The meet organiser will be able to assist you by supplying names on the list.
