5 Letterboxing at Camp Tongawood Letterboxing Trail These letterboxes will take you all over camp, you can do them all at once, or plan to look for each one as you re heading to other activities. Please remember to replace the letterbox, and if anything is damaged please with the details. 1. This letterbox is hidden in a small wooded area behind a kiosk that greets you as you enter camp. If you go to the kiosk, take 10 steps towards the wooded area and you should find the letterbox at the base of a tree. 2. You walk past this letterbox when you head into the lodge. It is under a tree that does not lose its leaves in the winter. The tree that the letterbox is under is close to the fire circle. 3. This letterbox is behind the traverse wall. If you walk behind the wall and find the path that goes from the clearing to the road you are close! Now look for a fallen tree in the wooded area by the path, and the letterbox is in the crook of the fallen tree. 4. This letterbox has a lovely view of the pond. If you stand on the porch of the outpost, you are very close to the letterbox. This letterbox is probably the most protected from the weather because it is under something that was built by a person.
6 Letterboxing at Camp Oakledge These letterboxes will take you all over camp, you can do them all at once, or plan to look for each one as you re heading to other activities. Please remember to replace the letterbox, and if anything is damaged please with the details. ISH- KI- TI- NI Letterboxing Trail Skill level: Beginner s Letterboxing directions: Follow the clues to locate the letterboxes. You will need to bring a pen to sign our logbook and a personal stamp if you d like to leave your stamped signature/image. Then you may collect an imprint of our hand carved stamp into your own/troop s letterboxing logbook. The totem pole is a symbol that represents Camp Oakledge. Each part of the pole has a special meaning to all of us at camp. We call the totem pole the The Ish- ki- ti- ni. 1. Start by facing the totem pole. Look to your left and find a large cedar tree. This is where Letterbox #1 is hidden. The owl at the top is named Ish- ki- ti- ni. Ish- ki- ti- ni is the protector of all of us here at Camp Oakledge. Sometimes at night you can see him soaring above camp watching out for us and our camp. 2. With your back towards the dining hall walk down the road towards the program shelter, stop at the first corner. Look left and you will see an oak tree with a small cedar tree snuggled up beside it. Here will be Letterbox #2. Underneath Ish- ki- ti- ni is the Girl Scout trefoil, to symbolize we are at Girl Scout camp and that we live by the promise and the law. 3. Return to the road you were on, with your back to the dining hall continue forward along the road until you see the flag pole on your right. GO THERE. With the volleyball court behind you walk towards the house with the mossy roof. Watch for a tree on your right with a large cubby hole containing Letterbox #3. Below the trefoil there is the frog, an amphibious creature. He spends time in both the land and the water. Since we spend a lot of time both in and out of the water here at Oakledge, the frog symbolizes our amphibious nature. 4. From Letterbox #3 stand with your back towards the swimming pool and walk forward across the road to a fallen tree. Look for Letterbox #4 hiding in the rocks behind the twin trees. The turtle is a very slow and patient animal. On our totem pole it symbolizes the patience that counselors must have with their campers and the patience that campers must have with each other (and sometimes their counselors!).
7 5. Continue up the road towards the dining hall until you see a utility pole on your left. STOP. Look towards your right and Letterbox #5 is hidden behind one of those trees. The butterfly, one of the most beautiful creatures on earth, is a part of the totem pole that represents the beauty of nature at our camp. 6. From Letterbox #5 return to the road and walk past the Cabin and the Pavilion. On your left you will come to a large tree that is near the propane tank. By this tree will be Letterbox #6. Under the animals is a green gnome (guh- nomie) who is responsible for all good things that happen at camp. He is also good at finding lost things so if you lose anything while at camp, whisper in the green gnome s ear and he will try and find it for you. 7. Now, walk behind the dining hall to a cluster of cedar trees. These trees are cuddling Letterbox #7. The green gnome sits on top of the red gnome, whom you can t see. Red gnomes live in a secret cave underneath the totem pole and are very mischievous. One of their favorite tricks is hiding things from campers and staff like hairbrushes and socks! Don t worry though, the green gnomes try to keep those red gnomes out of trouble! 8. Return to where you started to find Letterbox #8. Congratulations! You found all eight Letterboxes in this trail! Remember to keep the Letterbox locations a secret so other campers can enjoy the hunt too! If any of the letterboxes need maintenance, please our leader at dkopp9@comcast.net Feel free to let us know how you enjoyed your hunt, too! Thanks for playing!! 8 Juliette s Letterboxing Trail Skill level: Medium Letterboxing directions: Follow the clues to locate the letterboxes. Sign the log book when you find a box and/or stamp with your personal rubber stamp. Then you may collect an imprint of our hand carved stamp into your own logbook or journal. Try guessing the event in Juliette s life that each box represents, BEFORE reading the card found inside Pumpkin Start at Rappel tower. Walk northeast along the road, turn left and go north on the road towards Buckboard. Stop when you get to the Buckboard sign. Standing in front of the sign walk 20 steps down the Buckboard driveway. Stop. Look northwest to find Box Daisy Return to the Buckboard sign. Continue north on the road leading to archery. Go 39 steps. Box 2 will be immediately to the west of you. (Check under the hat!) Dog Continue north past the bend in the road. When you get to the neighbor s gate stop. Count 24 steps to the north. Box 3 will be east of you at the bottom of a tree Bells Now continuing on the road walking north 49 steps. Box 4 is southwest of you, snug as a bug in the cubby of a tree Ship You re halfway through, but keep on going! Continue north on the road until you come to where the water flows under. See the top of the hill? Continue past there until you find the driveway to the archery field. Find the sign and you ll find that Box 5 is doing just fine Telephone Now you need to head north into the archery field. Follow the tree line on the west until you see a long fallen tree. This special tree points east. Box 6 is nestled up alongside of it Pearls Continue following the tree line north and on around the bend to the west. Stop when you get to a green steel post with a white top. Standing at this post walk 9 steps to the west and look for Box 7 in its pen Pink Ribbon Continue northwest keeping parallel with the trees until you come to the far southwest corner of the meadow. Here you will find another green steel post. You ll find Box 8 near where the bluebirds sing. 9. Now, test your memory on the way back to the Rappel tower. Can you remember what event each box represented in Juliette s life as you pass back by the boxes? Congratulations! You found all eight Letterboxes in this trail! Remember to keep the Letterbox locations a secret so other campers can enjoy the hunt too! If any of the letterboxes need maintenance, please our leader at dkopp9@comcast.net. Let us know how you enjoyed your hunt, too! Thanks for playing!! Created by Troop 1546, Odessa, MO, 11/20/09
9 Sally s Water Fun! Letterboxing Trail Skill level: Intermediate. You will need to know how to find north, south, east and west. It was Sally s first time being a camper at Camp Oakledge. 1. Start at Elmer s Cove. Go 15 steps north of the shelter house to find Letterbox #1. The sun was shining bright and she knew it was going to be a great day. 2. From Letterbox #1 travel 68 steps northwest to the largest object on the waterfront. Then take 7 steps west. Hunt for Letterbox #2. First on Sally s list of things to try was sailing. 3. From Letterbox #2 walk 43 steps east and then take 8 steps south. See if you can find this Letterbox that is snug as a bug in a rug. Out on the water Sally saw a group of girls having fun in their canoes. 4. To the northwest of Number 6 you will find Letterbox #4 between a rock and a hard place. So Sally jumped in the water and swam across Elmer s Cove to try her hand at the canoes. 5. Truck on over to Number 9 and behind it you will find Letterbox #5 in a natural closet. Along the way to the canoes Sally met a friendly fish named Bob. 6. From Letterbox #5 head on over to where the arrows fly. Letterbox #6 will be tucked in tight under something white. (If a group is using this area, wait until they are through before you continue. You need never to go near the targets!) Sally and Bob became great friends that afternoon. Bob taught her how to snorkel. 7. Head back to the pavilion to stop and rest then take 24 steps to the southwest. Here you will find Letterbox #7. At the end of her first day of camp Sally sang songs around the campfire and shared stories of her water fun and adventures with Bob. 8. From Letterbox #7 go approximately 50 steps to the southeast. Letterbox #8 will be on your left and Number 2 is on your right. Congratulations! You found all eight Letterboxes in this trail! Remember to keep the Letterbox locations a secret so other campers can enjoy the hunt too! If any of the letterboxes need maintenance, please our leader at dkopp9@comcast.net. Feel free to let us know how you enjoyed your hunt, too! Thanks for playing!! Created by Troop 1546, Odessa, MO, 11/20/09
