1 Flatirons Ski Club An Outdoor Multi Sports & Social Group April, 2017 General Meetings are the Unitarian Universalist Church 5001 Pennsylvania AV, Boulder, CO Message from the President: It is my privilege and honor to be nominated as President of the Ski Club for the upcoming 2017/2018 year. As your VP, I did my best to line up colorful and interesting speakers for our General Meetings. It is marvelous to have Nancy Egbert as our next Vice President. Please welcome her warmly in that role. This past winter has been an active one, with many day and overnight trips for which we thank our hard-working trip leaders. Don't put away your skis quite yet, for mid-week skiing continues through the end of April. As we transition into warmer weather, it's clear that we are much more than a ski club, for there's a number of overnight trips, weekday hikes, wildflower rambles and other social gatherings to look forward to. Happy Spring!!! Donna Scott JUNE 3RD!! HOLD THE DATE! IT S SPRING! PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE SPRING FLING IN THE PARK on JUNE 3, 2017 The annual FSC Spring Fling will again be held at the Foothills Community Park from noon until 2 pm as usual. We will picnic and compare winter stories and adventures and look forward to summer outings. The club will provide barbecue pulled pork, chicken brats, veggie burgers and soft drinks! We ask you all to bring a vegetable dish, salad or dessert to share. Friends are welcome to come and enjoy the celebration and the warm hospitality of Flatirons Ski Club members! Directions: From North Broadway, go west on Violet. At 10th St turn right and follow the road as it becomes Cherry, turn right (North) and the park is on the left. Trinity Site and the Very Large Array March 31- April 2 (Fri-Sun) Ground zero where the first atomic bomb was detonated is only open one day in the spring. The VLA with its 27 radio telescope antennas each 82 ft. in diameter has tours to visit the control room on the same Saturday. Car pools may also visit the Ludlow Massacre Memorial, hike Tent Rocks National Monument, visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History and the Capulin Volcano crater on this trip. Contact Stewart Woodward for info. ATTENTION! The April 6th FSC General Meeting will feature the military historian, David Little! David will describe the training and display some of the equipment used by the 10th Mountain Division during WW II. The Division was activated in 1943 as a unit trained to fight in mountainous and arctic conditions. What is now Ski Cooper was built as the principal training area. In 1944, the Division helped break the stalemate in northern Italy, leading the race for the Austrian border. David encourages questions and will also address what the Division meant to military training and the ski industry after the war. LOCATION: Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania AV, Boulder, CO 80303

3 2017 Wildflower Rambles Warm temperatures and dry conditions! Many flowers (including pasque flowers and spring beauty) are already blooming in March! We are eager to get going, so two rambles have been set in April: April 17, Monday - Centennial Trail Leaders: Judy LaMaitis and Maddy Goldhawk. Meet 9:00 AM at the Centennial Trailhead Parking Lot on Mapleton Ave. as it enters Sunshine Canyon (across Mapleton from Mt. Sanitas). This trail escaped being burned in the recent Sunshine Fire, however there is some burn at the trailhead area. April 26, Wednesday - Goshawk Trail Leaders: Judy LaMaitis and Diane Green. Meet 8:00 AM at the Doudy Draw Trailhead Parking Lot on Eldorado Canyon Rd. to carpool. Hike begins at the trailhead gate near the Ashram. The Rambles leaders (there is a team of 8 of us) recognize that there are many levels of expertise and pace among the people interested in wildflowers and also recognize that we will get strung out on our route because of that. Some want general information about the flowers and others are into keying them out. Rambles are not meant to be hikes. Our rambles policy is to provide several leaders to accommodate faster, moderate and ambling paces. You are welcome to go as far as your interest or physical condition allows you. Third THURSDAY HIKERS Third Thursday hikes begin April 20th. The first hike is a return to Pawnee Grassland. This is an all day trip due to the driving distance, but the easy 4 mile round trip walk is in a beautiful mesa area. Limit of 12 people. For details and/or to reserve space contact Dolores Afainer. Tuesday Hikes 2017 The hike for Tuesday April 25th, we will meet at the parking lot across from the 4Mile Drive entrance at 9am. We will car pool to the trail up 4Mile. The entrance to the Benjamin Trail is there and we will hike up to the trail and around the 3 mile loop and back. Bring a smile and water, snacks! For info call Judy LaMaitis Thursday Hikers Spring hiking will take us up to mountain trails and colder weather. Bring food for lunch, snacks, water and warm clothing for the changing weather conditions. We will meet at 8:45 AM at the Meadows Shopping Center, at the southwest corner of Baseline and Foothills Parkway close to Anytime Fitness and the frontage road. We'll decide on where we want to go and leave by 9AM. We are looking forward to seeing new and old friends as we get to enjoy our mountains without the tourists! Contact Connie Macinko for more information. Canyonlands & Arches May 9 th - 12 th (Tues.-Fri.) The Flatirons Ski Club has once again rented 2 houses in Moab, UT for members to hike in Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park, mountain bike the slick rock trails or just wander around Moab.
