1 St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Volume Number 8 April 2012 Past-President s Report On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 fifty plus members of the Bo- Boen Snowmobile Club attended the last general meeting of the season and elections at Golden Pines Restaurant. Ed Siergiej gave the blessing and Sharon and her staff provided an excellent meal which was enjoyed by all. The Teller Committee of Ron & Jason Rhodes saw that everyone attending had their ballots for the evening s elections. A last chance was given for the Club s annual raffle and Linda was hawking her 50/50 raffle tickets as usual. The candidates for the given positions were given the opportunity to say a few words prior to the election. A letter from Al Clemmensen was read and the balloting proceeded. The ballots were collected and tabulated by the Teller Committee. Your new President is Al Clemmensen, President- Elect Tom Christensen, Secretary Pam Gebhardt, Treasurer Ed Siergiej and Board members Paul Bohnen and newcomer Milt Klingsporn. Welcome aboard Milt. The reading of the last general meeting minutes were approved as presented and Ed Siergiej gave a brief Treasurer s Report which was approved by the membership. I would like to thank all the Board members that served during my tenure and made my job as your President a rewarding and interesting experience. A special thanks to Ron Rhodes and Tom Christensen, only they know why for sure. Also, a special thanks to Gary Shambo for his kind words regarding my tenure as your President. Bruce & Mary Weber attended the meeting and will have a check for $ for the Club at the next Board meeting. The money was the result of T-shirt sales at the Radar Run and will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bruce & Mary. Gary Shambo & Gary Schultz presented a check for $ to the Club for the work of the Trail Assistance Patrol at the Radar Run & Ice Drags. Nice work guys! Sign-up sheets went around for the Snowmobile Hall of Fame Classic Snowmobile Round-Up which will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Community Shelter. If you signed up as a worker for set-up, working the food counter on Sunday or for a bakery donation please mark it on your calendar. If you can help out that day call either one of our cochairmen, Steve Soltwedel, (715) or Ron Rhodes (715) They are also looking for a third co-chair to assist with the event. The more the merrier and it makes the work go easier. Pam reminded everyone attending the meeting of the Annual Pig Roast Fundraiser at the Sportsman s Chalet on Saturday, August 25, This pretty well sums up the events of my last meeting. Although this wasn t a great season, it wasn t the worst on record either. I learned a lot about local politics and what makes a club work and how important volunteers are. Those of you that volunteer time and time again are greatly appreciated, thanks again for your support and efforts. See you in September. Rich Polaski THANK YOU At our February membership meeting at Clearview Supper Club, Darrell & Connie Nell presented the club with a donation check in the amount of $200. Thank you for your continued support. Club Raffle Winners Thank you to everyone who purchased and sold tickets for our annual club raffle. Our net profit will be around $4,000 this year. 2 President s Report Well this is to let you know that at the membership meeting I have been elected President, President-Elect, Tom Christensen, Secretary, Pam Gebhardt, Treasurer, Ed Siergiej and Board members Paul Bohnen and Milt Klingsporn. I want to thank everyone for this appointment and will serve our club like I have for the past 2 years as President-Elect with vigor to keep our club the best in the state. I would like to thank Rich Polaski for the past 2 years serving as President making sure our club and its members had a great place to ride their sleds. Today, March 16th Vilas County has officially closed our trails as of noon. This marks the end of the 2011/2012 snowmobile season. Again our groomer drivers with the leadership of the Trail Boss, Jim Wendt our trail system was again one if not the best in the North woods. I hope that everyone had a great year riding our trail system and I hope to see everyone again next season. I will keep all the members informed with upcoming fund raising dates and times. I hope to see as many of you as possible during this summer while you are up in St. Germain. My first meeting as President is April 3rd, 2012 and I hope to see you there. If you have any questions or need anything from our club you can me at snowgoers3@aol.com. Al Clemmensen Trail Boss Report Well, our roller coaster winter ride is over. We really had every extreme one could imagine. All in all, I guess the year was an average one based on the hours put on our equipment. I really want to thank my crew for keeping the faith that snow would come, and man, did it come! You really have to understand that 22" of snow packs to around 4" but with the traffic grinding it up, it really can't last long. It was a matter of 5 days and our system was in need of MORE snow to really keep the trails in top shape. We did our best with what we had and the results we had were really great. We got tons of compliments about our trails and for that, I thank your drivers. This really is a great group of guys! We plan to get a new drag this summer to keep our equipment in the best possible shape. I want to wish Al Clemmensen all the best as our incoming President. I am looking forward to working with Al, he really wants the Bo-Boen s to be the best club in the state and will work hard to see that it happens. We have a great working relationship that I know will carry on with him in a leadership role. I hope you and your family have a great off-season and lots of fun doing warm weather things. We will all be thinking of our favorite season on occasion and have some great thoughts about what is sure to come next snow season. All my best to you and yours be safe and remember that with Gods help we can do it again in ! 4 Land Owners We would especially like to express our thanks and appreciation for the private landowners that allow the snowmobile trails to cross their property. Without their generosity, the 25,000 mile trail system in Wisconsin would not exist. Approximately half of the trails exist on private property. Please respect the private landowners and stay on the trail! The following article appeared in Snowmobile Magazine and says it all. Thanks to Landowners by John Pruzak They are the totally forgotten saviors of our sport, generous folks who may or may not understand snowmobiling, but people who care enough about others and their hobbies to allow our sport to exist. I'm talking about private land owners - nameless, faceless people to most of us, owners of farms and homes, estates and businesses whose property many of us cross every time we go out snowmobiling. The on-going battle over access to public lands has stolen a lot of headlines. Yes, we must defend our rights to ride in national parks, national forests and state and locally owned lands. Yes, they are owned by the people, for the people and of the people, and we shouldn't be excluded because some folks with bad science and outlandish statistics have political clout. That issue is particularly important in Western states. Did you know that 91 percent of all snowmobile trails in the West are on public lands? It's true. At the same time, however, we must never lose sight of the private land owners who make our sport possible across the country. In the Northeast, 70 percent of all trails are on privately owned lands, and 72 percent of Midwestern trails are on private lands. So if you ride 150 miles on a Saturday in the Northeast or Midwest, you are likely spending 105 miles on somebody else's property. There are likely hundreds of people who signed leases to allow access to their land so you and your friends can snowmobile on a given day. Why do they do it? It's not for the money. If they get paid for access to their property, land owners must then assume the risk for anything that happens on their property. If they sign over access to a strip of that property to a snowmobile club, however, the club accepts the risk and buys the insurance. The land owners also don't do it for the notoriety. Do you know who lives in the yellow house with the white picket fence who you go blitzing by at 50 mph? Of course not. You're only on the person's land for 10 seconds, then you're on to somebody else's property. And then somebody else's. And that's part of the challenge that our sport faces. The common snowmobiler doesn't know any of these people, and some snowmobilers don't even respect these people. You've seen it: hardcore sled heads who think they're real tough guys when they launch over a snow bank, smack onto somebody's driveway and then spin their studded track as they accelerate toward the snow bank on the other side. You've also seen the tracks of senseless snowmobilers who leave the trail in search of powder, carving a path past the "Stay On Trail" sign, across somebody's front yard or farm field. Or the people with loud pipes who roar through residential areas with sleds screaming out a nasty song. Obviously these people are in the minority. The vast majority of snowmobilers have common sense and respect other people's property. But sometimes, even these people surprise me - some people, when they put on a helmet, their calm persona disappears. Suddenly, they're not Dr. Jones the friendly pharmacist - they're Ricky Racer, faster than their buddies and always willing to prove it. But remember, if that one person who owns the yellow house with the picket fence decided that he's had enough of the hot rodders, sky pilots and powder chasers, he could deny access to his land. And if there's no viable alternative around his property, that could shut down a huge section of trail. So on behalf of all snowmobilers, I would like to give a very heartfelt "Thank You!" to the land owners. And I ask you to extend a "Thank You" yourself, by following the rules, respecting their property rights and doing the right thing this winter. Our sport depends upon it. Reprinted with permission of Snowmobile Magazine, Winter 2001 Get well wishes were sent to Harold Suarez who had surgery earlier this winter. Please call Arlene Rieckenberg (715) when you have information on births, of members who are ill or hospitalized and need a bit of cheer, sympathy or encouragement.
