1 N E W S L E T T E R Long Island Dahlia Society DECEMBER 2012 Happy Holidays! This has been a busy fall season for the club. I was amazed that on one Saturday the entire garden was dug up. Our volunteers were terrific and have continued to work to clean and box up the tubers for winter storage. I am very excited about our holiday party on December 20 th, it is a great time for us to relax and have fun with our fellow members and families and friends. I extend very warm holiday wishes and a great big thank you to all of our volunteers and members. Your important contribution of your time and energy has been crucial to our garden and to all of our special events. A special note to our new members, please join us, meet new people and participate in the holiday festivities! We look forward to celebrating with all of you, along with your spouses, significant others, and family members at our Holiday Party. Editor s Note My Dahlia Season As I look around my sunroom at all the tubers I have in various stages of curing, I am amazed at how many tubers my garden produced. I doubled my garden beds this year, as I thought you could never have too many dahlias, well not really, you can and I do! I encourage new members to come to the garden, our meetings, and enjoy our events. You will discover a fine group of dahlia growers from all walks of life. I want to thank everyone who so graciously shared their dahlia knowledge and skills this year. I enjoyed the Saturday mornings I spent with Bill learning the fine art of disbudding, I now disbud with confidence. Joe Laundrie continually encourages all of us all to keep learning and listening to the growers in our club. When I saw Joe s dahlia garden this summer, grown tight with tons of beautiful dahlias, I realized I could fit even more beds in my yard, but perhaps I need to manage what I have! Any members who have been away for a while, we hope to see you again, we certainly miss you. As I always say, you get much more then just dahlias with our club, what you get are great friendships that grow beyond the garden, wonderful times, fun events, and the delight of the dahlias. Oh, and we always have cake! Happy Holidays from your Editor Carol Jansch - 2 -

13 American Dahlia Society (ADS) News Now is the time of year to renew your ADS dues for One very important step in preparing for next year's dahlia season is to be sure that your 2013 Dahlia Society dues are paid as soon as possible! By renewing before the first of the year you will help the all-volunteer ADS Membership Committee manage their mailing lists and insure that you won't miss any publications. Late renewals force the Membership Committee to spend time and money sending reminders and processing checks and membership information. The largest costs are for individualized mailing of Bulletins and Classification Books to members renewing late - in the $1,000's. We are an all part of volunteer organizations and we watch our costs closely. For the sake of your organization we ask please: If you are a member of a local Dahlia Society contact your membership chair as soon as possible. The following rates apply to ADS members joining through local societies. Your local society will likely have some additional dues. The rates below are for the ADS portion of your Dahlia Society membership only: US ADS Membership - $24 Single/$27 Family Renewals through local Dahlia Societies must be done directly through your home society, do not send the above dues to ADS. Questions? Contact our ADS Representative, Bill Bushman atwjbphd6593@msn.com LIDS and ADS Annual Membership Renewal Time! Long Island Dahlia Society dues are due in January 2013, the cost is $20 American Dahlia Society Membership dues are also due : Individual $24 (includes one (1) classification book and the four (4) quarterlies) Or Two (2) memberships to a single address $27 (includes two (2) classification books and the four (4) quarterlies) Payment You can pay your dues at our next meeting on December 15 or mail a check to: LIDS, PO Box 76 West Sayville, NY
