Andrew is a LIDS member, the President of the Lindenhurst Camera club and past President and active member of the Photographic Federation of Long Island. Judge and Lecturer for the PFLI. His presentation will highlight the three major areas: impact, composition, and technique. that a judge looks at when judging a photography competition. He will discuss ways you can improve your photographs. He focus on how to select the best photography to submit in the Photography Competition. THERE S SOMETHING IN THE AIR! Photograph by Gene Murtha Photograph by Pat Murphy Photograph by Pat Murphy While walking through the dahlia garden I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a monarch butterfly with its orange and black tissue paper wings and soft black body. I held up my camera to catch it in my lens but its flight pattern was erratic. It was escalating up and down and then going into long glides. Its flight pattern varied and changed direction often. Then suddenly it would alit on a dahlia bloom or hover over the bloom for a faction of a second. I marvel at its ability to maintain a speed which can go up to 25 mph as it steadily beat its wings. Then in blink of an eye it disappeared. Next time I will try to come back in the early morning or late afternoon when they are slower and feeding on the dahlia s nectar. When you are down at the garden look for the many bees, butterflies and other insects feeding on the dahlias. If your lucky you will be able to capture one in the camera s lens. Enter your photograph in the LIDS Photography Display and Competition (Kids and Critters category) on October 1st and 2nd. Beginners and advanced photographers are welcomed to submit their photographs.
