2 LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I. project: an overview The LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I Project is funded by the Directorate General Environment of the European Commission, under the LIFE+ Nature & Biodiversity Program. LIFE has been an EU funding instrument for the environment since 1992, and reached its fourth edition; RI.CO.PR.I is the acronym of the project, indicating the Restoration and Conservation of arid grasslands in Central and Southern Italy. The project aims to the recovery and conservation of arid grassland habitats as priorities by the European Union and it s coordinated by the Province of Rome. The Province of Potenza, the Park of Gallipoli Cognato, the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Italian Confederation of Farmers of Basilicata are associated beneficiaries. The first habitat, the grasslands of Festuco-Brometalia, is among endangered European plant communities with the greatest biodiversity and high number of rare species. The second habitat, the pseudo-steppes of Thero-Brachipodietea, with a typical Mediterranean distribution, is particularly associated with two species of butterfly, Eriogaster catax and Melanargia arge, whose conservation is also considered a priority by the European Union. These habitats, reportedly as semi-natural ones (because of a result of human actions related to the pasture), are very common in central and southern Italy, and are in progressive regression after abandonment and poor management of grassland farming. The various activities of the project take place on three Sites of Community Importance (SCI), including two in the province of Rome: the SCI Monte Ruffi, in the municipality of Cerreto Laziale, and SCI Monte Guadagnolo mainly in the territory of Capranica Prenestina; and one in the province of Potenza, the SCI-SPA Dolomiti di Pietrapertosa, which is located in the municipalities of Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano. LIFE09 NAT/IT/ NEWSLETTER N. 1 by Katia Gioscio and Andrea Pietrini 2
3 The project started in January 2011 and will end in June The activities, carried out by different project partners, permitted to know, through a careful investigation, the real condition of the two habitats, the butterflies associated, and to draft guidelines for all actions that will be implemented. In addition, great importance has been given to communication, not only through a dedicated website ( but also with meetings gathering local communities and schools involved with the actions of the project. The disseminating of activities of the Project Rome, October 28 th, 2010 A press conference for the presentation of the LIFE+ RI.CO.PR.I. project, was held in Palazzo Valentini, seat of the Province of Rome, by the Agriculture Provincial Councillor dr. Aurelio Lo Fazio, and two project partners: the University of Rome Tor Vergata, and the CIA of Basilicata, plus the participation of representatives of Regione Lazio.
