Stradbroke Cup Brucknell Park Information Book Due to infrastructure at Brucknell Park Stradbroke Cup is limited to a maximum of 15 patrols /or 100 scouts (youth). Booking will close on March 20 th or earlier if maximum number of scouts registered prior to March 20 th. Introduction Welcome to Stradbroke Cup at Brucknell Park, this booklet is a guide for both new and old campers at Stradbroke. South Western District Scout Association manages Brucknell Park. It offers a serene bushland setting nestled in the rich dairy farming district of Victoria s Great South West. It is located 3 hours southwest of Melbourne and just 30min from Warrnambool. Brucknell Park is 146 acres of Natural Australian bushland, only minutes from the Great Ocean Road and the Shipwreck Coast. Facilities include an onsite caretakers residence, 2 recreation halls used for Night Time Activities/Admin/First Aid-Welfare/and Leader Accommodation. There is a large arena for activities, and an abundance of patrol camping areas and huts situated throughout the camp. Over the camp you will be visited a number of times by a team of Advisors/Mentor Leaders. They will assist you in achieving higher camping standards, in line with the camping standards checklist. It should be the aim of PL s and Patrols to listen to, and try to take on board the advice of the Advisors. If you have any questions or problems, please do not hesitate to ask the Advisors or Leaders on camp.

Camp Rules Access, speed limits and directions must be adhered to all times. Vehicles must be returned to the Car Park after unloading. The main assess road is one way only. Visitors are to park in the main car park and walk to campsites. All other vehicles are to remain in the car park area until permitted back on site for pack-up. The area around the Wardens House is out of bounds. There are to be NO fires lit in campsites. Scouts are asked to abide by Scout Promise and Law in camp. Pre-Camp Log The pre-camp log is to make formal your preparation prior to the camp. It should include: Personnel list (including Leaders) attending the camp. (Plus total No. In the Patrol) Patrol Program & Duty Roster (Overall program provided in this document, activity program collected on registration on arrival at camp.) Menu, Shopping List and Camp Equipment List Personal Health Forms-print off from Care Monkey of all patrol members. You require 2 copies of the Log Book- The Log must be compiled by the Patrol prior to the camp preferably in a folder or book. 1 Patrol Log Book handed in when registering along with a copy of the Patrol Personal Record and Health Forms for each patrol member to be kept at HQ with First Aid. 1 copy needs to remain at camp with your patrol and must also include copies of Personal Record and Health Forms-print off from Care Monkey Hygiene Most of the modern conveniences we have in our home are not available on Scout camp, but this is no excuse to neglect hygiene. Showers-Scouts A shower block (with 2 showers) and toilets is available for scouts next to the Neville Dance Training Centre. During the day after water activities scouts can use Coleman Hall showers as well.
Toilets Portable toilets will be located on the main track for scouts, as well as in the Norm Shepherd Hut and also located at the end of the Neville Dance Training Centre. Showers Leaders Showers and toilets are available for Leaders in the Coleman Hall where Leader accommodation and catering is located. Please note that during activity times scouts will use showers after Water Activities. Leaders to use showers outside these times. Camp hygiene Your campsite should be tidy and free of food scraps. Food such as Meats, milk etc. must be kept in an esky with ice. Esky must be kept clean and free of slush etc. /off the ground. Food should be stored correctly in esky/s (e.g. Meat/Dairy separate) Tables etc. should be cleaned before and after each meal. Rubbish must be disposed of correctly. (Bins in campsites to have LIDS) First Aid First Aid is very much a part of good Hygiene. Cuts and Scratches are holes in the skin and may become infected. Any injury or illness should be reported to your PL and treated. First Aid Kits should be handy, clearly visible and available to all, not hidden in the P.L s pack or locked in a car or box! Any serious injury should be reported to HQ (Coleman Hall) - there will be a qualified First Aiders onsite. Make it obvious and clear to all including visitors where your patrol first aid kit can be located. Fire Provisions It is a requirement that patrols MUST have fire safety provisions on site, including rake/shovel/water-sand buckets. Please refer to checklist re equipment required.
Layout Of The Site Most sites have features that can make setting up a perfect campsite difficult. When setting up your camp the thing to consider is how to make the best use of the site to avoid any problems. At Brucknell Park wind generally comes in a South Westerly Direction. You should: a. Make best use of the site, stand back and have a good look at the site before you unload. b. Place components with respect to drainage, wind, overhanging tree branches and other sites. c. Consider relative position of tents, eating shelter, washbasin, waste disposal, food & equipment storage, clothesline etc. d. Site Identification, Troop / Patrol name, gateway etc. Boundary ropes are not required. The position and layout of the site should be such that it won t interfere with others, e.g. too close to adjoining Patrols / Troops or across pathways or roads. Use the whole site where possible, a good layout will allow you to access your Q Store easily from your cooking area and dining shelter. A dining shelter is a welcoming area and possibly suited to be an area visitor s access first when coming into your campsite. Bottled Gas Like at Jamborees the only method of cooking allowed is Gas. When using bottled gas remember that it is under high pressure and can be dangerous. Gas bottles must be pressure tested regularly and date stamped, (out of date Bottles must NOT be used, 10 years from last date stamp) and hoses and fittings checked for damage and kept tight. The advisors will be checking the stamped date of gas bottles, even if using swap and Go please check yourself that the bottles in camp are stamped in date. Gas storage refer to p 39 of 2017 Scout Info Book Gas Appliances are not permitted on days of Total Fire Ban so make sure you have a meal that can be eaten without cooking. Make sure you re up to date with gas cooking requirements re position and clearance. Kitchen Hygiene There should be adequate provision for washing up provided Waste Disposal Current thinking calls for two units in the waste disposal area - the Wet Pit and a Bag or Container for dry waste/with LID
The Wet Pit is used to remove food or fat from water. The design of the wet pit should be such that food scraps are caught in a filter above the water and removed at regular intervals. The filter should also be removed at regular intervals and cleaned or disposed of. Access to and from the wet pit must be free of hazards to prevent accidents and the wet pit should be fenced off for safety. A container or rubbish bag for dry rubbish must be provided, this container must have a lid or cover and be emptied at regular intervals. At Stradbroke at Brucknell Park there will be rubbish pick up sites around the camp. There will be NO rubbish pick-up after 3pm. Water Patrols should bring enough water for Saturday. On check-in you will be advised of locations to fill empty water drums. Creek water is available around the track (taps) but this is NOT suitable for drinking. A chilled filtered bubble tap is located outside Coleman Hall. It is a good idea to have a drink bottle to take to activities. Ice Included in camping fee are 2 bags of top up ice for each patrol. Ice will NOT be available until Sunday afternoon, it is expected that you will bring ice in eskys at the start of camp. Details available at check-in regarding ordering your topup ice during the camp. Eating Shelter The eating shelter is another important part of your camp and listed below are a Number of points to remember: The table should be large enough to be able to seat your whole Patrol plus Visitors/ Leader Advisor The table should be level and firm with adequate and safe seats The cover or shelter should be high enough to allow all members of the Patrol to stand with comfort and remember that touching the underside will draw the water through wet canvas. There should be adequate and correct storage for food and eating utensils. Table Clean - If a tablecloth is used both table and cloth should be clean. It is desirable to use a plastic cloth but don't cut food on it, if windy it's a good idea to pin the cloth down or at least weigh it down with appropriate equipment. Area Clean - Any food scraps lying around will attract flies, ants and even possums at night. Food Storage - The storage should be clean and tidy, readily accessible, and able to withstand insects and the weather. Perishables should be kept cold. * Food should NOT be stored where people sleep.
Meals At Brucknell Park Stradbroke the Menu will be checked for content and quantity. Remember that we are eating in a camp and not in the controlled conditions at home. Personal washing facilities should be available, with disinfectant. The preparation should be good and hygienic. All scouts should have clean face and hands and tidy hair. Table manners should be reasonable and Grace should be said. The complete menu should be served in correct sequence and cooked to a reasonable standard. The food should be served correctly with only the cooks and possibly the waiter duty scouts leaving the table. Gadgets Gadgets are those extra bits and pieces that are constructed to make life easier and more acceptable e.g. a washbasin may be used on the ground but it is easier and more comfortable to use it on a stand at the right height. Consider The quality of manufacture of camp gadget. Is it labor saving. The use of bush material (Lashing poles etc. brought from home) The gadgets must be made during the current camp. Things such as the wet pit are a necessity and don't come under the heading of a gadget. Safety Advice: It is important that the equipment scouts are using is of appropriate size (pots for boiling water NOT too big) for them to handle. Suggest they run through Kitchen Safety prior to Stradbroke. If they are unsure they should ask a leader / advisor. Check you have correct gas fittings and tools to safely secure connections. While not in camp all gas to be turned off and the appliance and bottle.
Q.M Store There should be provision for keeping perishable food such as milk, meat and butter cool and Esky's should be kept clean and free of ice slush, preferably off the ground. Gas, detergent, soaps etc. must NOT be stored near the food. Goods not in cans or bottles should be well, protected from dust and flies and should be on tables or racks. Air should be able to circulate around all food. The Quartermaster or Scouts handing out food should have a washbasin, soap, water, and towel within easy reach of the store. Troop gear and spare equipment should be stored away from food in the Q-store off the ground. The area set aside for food preparation should be thoroughly clean. Leader Camping/Accommodation/Meals Bunk bed accommodation available in Main Hall (Coleman Hall HQ). Leaders also can Camp (tents/camper trailer etc.) in leader camping area (next to Norm Shepherd Hut) or can sleep in Norm Shepherd Hut. Catering Available, or Self Cater for Leaders Please indicate when registering online your accommodation and catering choices. Remember that BBQ lunch is supplied at HQ before final parade and to allow for this when organising patrol menu. This is to allow you to pack up cooking equipment after breakfast on Tuesday 11 th.
