5 Saint Hilda, Abbess of Whitby by Edain ingen Raghailligh ben MacDonald (Chronicler s Note: This is part of Lady Edain s A&S 50 Challenge to research and write articles on 50 Unrecognized Medieval Women. For more information on her challenge, please visit Women, especially in the early middle ages, played a large part in the establishment of religion and religious houses in England and elsewhere. While there was little requirement to join a monastic house throughout most of the middle ages, convents were notoriously under-funded and usually had a waiting-list for entry. Early in middle ages, many convents were attached to monasteries and income from lands were shared. However, keeping the sexes so close together was eventually deemed dangerous, and convents were forced to detach and find their own land. Because women could not conduct their own church services, priests had to be attached to the convent to say mass, hear confession and otherwise serve the needs of the cloistered community. This caused convents to be more of a strain on the church than more self-sufficient monasteries, and so there were never enough nunneries to fill the needs of women who wished to take vows. Wealthy women were more likely to enter a convent than poorer women because many convents demanded payment for entrance (they requested a woman's dowry in exchange for her upkeep). Also, many wealthy noble women, who wished to enter a convent, but did not find one suitable or close enough to home, were likely to found their own. Hilda was born around the year 614 in England, probably in Northumbria. She was the grandniece of King Edwin and her sister, Hereswith, was the mother of King Aldwulf of East Anglia (she herself was a nun by the time Hilda took vows). We know nothing about her life prior to the taking of vows, other than she lived as a lay woman for 33 years prior to seeking the monastic way of life. Her mother's name was Breguswith and her father was Hereric, who was thought to have been poisoned while living in exile. Hilda, as was common in early Christianity in the British Isles, traveled and founded or reestablished monastic houses in several places. She was apparently an able administrator, and ruled over dual monastic houses (where there were both women and men). She carefully followed the monastic rules previously laid down for male monastic houses and was a good friend of the well-respected Bishop Aidan (later Saint Aidan). One of the houses she re-founded was the Abbey of Whitby. It was here, in that the Synod of Whitby took place, to determine whether England would follow Roman or Celtic rules (the Celtic church kept a different date for Easter, had a different tonsure, and varied in several places in regards to monastic orders and the offices). Hilda supported Celtic rule, but accepted the council's decision to fall in line with the Church at Rome. There was very much a mentor/surrogate parent role within both female and male religious houses, and the leader of any house also took pride in his or her pupils who excelled. Abbess
6 Hilda saw five of her brothers elevated to the position of bishop, and another one elected, but who died before consecration. A simple cowherd, Caedamon, with her encouragement, wrote Christian poetry which was praised for its beauty, and which spread the fame of the Abbey throughout England and beyond. Abbess Hilda gained a wide-reaching reputation as a fair and charitable woman. It is said that kings and princes, as well as common people, came to visit her and seek her advice and blessing. In an England which was still only partially converted, Hilda converted many just by rumors of her holiness and goodness. Six years before her death, she was stricken with some sort of reoccurring fever, but she continued to receive visitors and supplicants from her bed. When she died, a nun in her convent, and another one some 13 miles away, were awoken in the middle of the night by a bright light and the sound of a death-knell, and they both saw Mother Hilda escorted by angels into Heaven. She appears to have been canonized shortly after her death. Whitby was ransacked by Danish Vikings in 800 and her remains were either scattered, or the knowledge of their exact whereabouts was lost; Glastonbury and Gloucester both claimed to have them by the 10th century. Her feast day is November 17. In icons, she is depicted either holding Whitby Abbey or a book in one hand and a crosier in the other (abbots, and one would assume abbesses, were entitled to the rank and dress of a bishop, which included the pastoral staff). The characters are contemporaries of Abbess Hilda, and she appears in the book as well. The story line was decent enough; the characters were better. I have seen some reviews where people complain when the saintly persons experience very real jealousy and pride (imagine that), and that they are religious fanatics. If you'd like to be added to the distribution list, me at euriol@yahoo.com with the subject line stating that you wish to subscribe to the newsletter. The 6 complimentary hardcopies are yet to be mailed. I changed the format so each page is 8.5"x11". As always, feedback is appreciated. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the February issue, the Kingdom Chronicler said it was a "Lovely issue!". Please consider submitting artwork or an article to the March issue. Although I have some nice clip art, it can't compare to the artistry of the populace of this Barony. I would love to have a "news" article about our participation at the Festival of Ice Parade & Demo and the St. Patrick's Day Parade for the March & April issues. Adjournment Gunnar made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Ulrich. Tigernach adjourned the meeting at 3:06 pm. Clarks Summit Festival of Ice Parade and Demo What a wonderful experience it has been doing this festival! It goes to show how this Barony can unite and work together so well, plus with our friends who came and shared in this with us Delftwood, Sterlynge Vayle and Concordia. Vivat to you all!! February 12, 2009 we participated in the festival parade. It was a cold, windy, snowy night. Despite the bad weather we had a great turn out! Horses, heavy fighters, fencers (who just walked do to the weather) and many walkers. The crowd were smaller than expected, but were enthusiastic and loved Po and Tufa s charm! Plus Barbary Rose and Ellisif handed out candy to the children along the parade route. February 14, 2009 we participated in a demo at the Festival. We had A&S and armor displays. There were games and demonstrations. There were heavy fighting and fencing. We had lovely Bardic singing and a mock court! The populace asked us questions and took SCA information home with them. We had a lot of media attention before, during and after the festival. The festival committee was so gracious; they provided us with drinks and donuts. Thanks to Gunnarr we had pizza for lunch! Above all I think everyone had fun and that is the most important part of all! I have been inspired to be more than I very thought I could be. Thank you for the guidance and motivation everyone. I truly am grateful! So when is the next demo? In Service Lady Lumanitsa the Oracle
