Day 02 Sep 19, Wed: LONDON Rise and shine early this morning, as we have a full day tour of London, seeing all the main tourist sites, including entrances to the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and St.Paul s Cathedral. We will be stopping in front of Buckingham Palace for a photo opportunity, and if we are lucky, see the changing of the guards. We stop later afternoon for a bit of leisure time at Covent Garden area, before returning to our hotel for our group dinner, which is sure to be an entertaining one, as our tour host Neville sets the pace for a delightful 12 days together! (B,D) Discover the iconic landmarks, architectural and cultural diversity, and fascinating history that makes London the most visited city in the world. Your London sightseeing tour will take you on a non-stop precession of recognizable landmarks, including The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, WestminsterAbbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul s Cathedral, Nelson s Column, and Marble Arch, The Tower of London and much more.
Visit the Tower of London On the banks of the River Thames in the heart of London stands the Tower of London and nearly 1000 years of history and intrigue. The Tower of London has been used at various times as a palace, barracks, military stronghold, zoo and most famously as a prison incarcerating famous names like Sir Walter Raleigh, Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes. During a visit to the Tower you can see the crown jewels worth over 20 billion, meet the ravens who legends say have the fate of the Kingdom in their claws, talk to the distinctive Yoeman guards with their white ruffs, and learn about the gruesome torture that went on within the walls. Visit Westminster Abbey The Gothic masterpiece of Westminster Abbey has been at the heart of British history since the formation of the Abbey by Edward the Confessor in The Abbey became the coronation church for the English monarchy in 1066, was transformed into the modern stone Abbey in the reign of Henry III and has since been the venue for countless magnificent, joyous and sometimes unfortunate royal events. In modern times the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and funerals of the Queen Mother and Princess Diana have etched the Abbey into the common memory of billions around the globe. A visit of Westminster Abbey takes in such highlights as the Coronation Chair, the medieval Lady Chapel, museum containing a collection of royal effigies, and the Abbey Gardens which whisk you away from the hubbub of the city. Visit St. Paul s Cathedral The present Cathedral, the masterpiece of Britain's most famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, is at least the fourth to have stood on the site. It was built between 1675 and 1710, after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, and services began in 1697.This was the first Cathedral to be built after the English Reformation in the sixteenth-century, when Henry VIII removed the Church of England from the jurisdiction of the Pope and the Crown took control of the life of the church. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral is the second biggest dome in the world, after St Peter's in Rome.At the dome's base is the Whispering Gallery, a circular walkway halfway up the inside of the dome. Due to the acoustics of the curved surface, a phrase whispered against one wall can be heard against the far wall 112 feet away. Some important events that have taken place at St. Paul s include : Queen Victoria s Diamond Jubilee in 1897 Victoria became queen on 20 June 1837 at the age of 18, succeeding her uncle, King William IV. She was a popular figure in Canada throughout her reign. Her birthday, 24th May, was celebrated in the Province of Canada as Victoria Day from Victoria selected Ottawa as Canada s capital and in 1867 she played a key role in Confederation. She met with John A. Macdonald and four other Fathers of Confederation in London and expressed her support for Canadian unity and self-government. Funeral of Admiral Nelson in 1806 Funeral of Winston Churchill in Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in Day 03 Sep 20, Thu: LONDON BATH After a full English breakfast, our first class coach will depart London for a 200 km journey to the city of Bath. Marilyn our expert Tour Manager, will fill you with lots of interesting tidbits en route, and Neville will most certainly keep you entertained! Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of this part of England for the next couple of hours. After check in at the hotel, you will have some time to have lunch before we set off on our afternoon tour of the city and its famous Roman Baths. (B,D)
Visit the Roman Baths The Roman Baths of the historical city of Bath are some of the best preserved Roman ruins in the world and it is even possible to wander around this vast leisure complex just as the Romans did over 2000 years ago. Built in AD70 over hot springs the Great Bath still receives over one million litres of hot water daily from the 12,000 year old Kings Spring below. An interactive museum, costumed characters and awardwinning audio guides narrated by witty travel writer Bill Bryson are also available to bring the history of the baths to life. There s an opportunity to taste the spa water a healthy drop containing 42 minerals and purported healing power or alternatively there is a café and grand restaurant in the old pump house. Day 04 Sep 21, Fri: BATH COTSWOLDS BATH We enjoy a tasty full English breakfast at our central hotel, and then head off on our coach to explore the Cotswolds. We will drive through charming villages and scenic countryside with stops in some special places to sample local fare, do a little shopping and browsing, and lots of photo opportunities. A lovely relaxing day to enjoy this magical area of Britain. Dinner will be together at our hotel this evening. (B,D) The Cotswold s honey-coloured limestone houses, historical market towns and rolling green hills framed by drystone walls represent an unspoiled idyll of quintessential England. Dotted amongst the picturesque rural scenery, Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Camden and Lacock are only a few examples of a huge selection of postcard-pretty towns and villages offering independent cafes, pubs and shops, and bustling market squares. Then there are elegant stately homes like Chastleton House and Corsham Court, the national arboretum at Westonbirt and beautiful driving routes of the Romantic Road. The small picturesque village of Lacock has been a major filming location for the Harry Potter films. The Potter's house and a church that were shown briefly in Philosopher's Stone were filmed there, along with Slughorn's temporary home of Budleigh Babberton in Half-Blood Prince. On the outskirts of Lacock Village, the Lacock Abbey was used for several Hogwarts interior scenes in the earlier movies, including the Mirror of Erised scenes, and Professors Snape and Quirrell's classrooms. Its cloisters were also used as some of Hogwart's corridors and the courtyard made an appearance as well. More recently in February 2015, the cast and crew of DOWNTON ABBEY transformed Church Street in Lacock into a 1920s livestock market. Sheep, pigs and a 1-tonne long-horned bull joined the cast, as well as many extras, creating a bustling market scene attended by Lord Grantham, his family and many of the staff.
Day 05 Sep 22, Sat: BATH CARDIFF This morning we will depart from Bath for our two hour journey to Wales, where we will be stopping for the day and evening to enjoy Cardiff Castle and some of the sights in this lovely Welsh city. After lunch we will hop on our coach again for a guided tour of Cardiff. (B,SD) This ancient city became the biggest supplier of steel and coal to the world through its docks. People from all over the world settled here, adding a wealth of diversity and character that remains to this day. On our tour this afternoon we will see: the Principality Stadium- Very few international sports arenas occupy a plot of land in a city centre, but this remarkable stadium really is a sight to behold both inside and out. International rugby and football is played here, as well as a variety of the other sports events and major live music concerts. The Millennium Stadium - a striking slate and steel structure in Cardiff Bay.It s nicknamed The Armadillo due to its copper-coloured dome. The centre hosts a huge range of concerts and performances in one main theatre and two smaller halls. It also features a number of cafes and restaurants, with regular free events creating a vibrant atmosphere. The National Museum which houses world-renowned impressionist and post-impressionist work, and Cardiff Bay - Europe's largest Waterfront Development. We visit Cardiff Castle - Cardiff Castle sits in a prime position overlooking the city centre of Cardiff. Over 2000 years of history has seen Cardiff Castle act as a home and shelter to Roman soldiers, medieval knights, influential Victorian nobles and families taking refuge from the air raids during World War Two. The castle as it stands now is a curious mix of styles as the Bute family employed the services of the unconventional architect William Burgess to add an eccentric Victorian twist to the original Medieval building. After our tour of the city and Cardiff Castle, you will have some free time this afternoon to do a little shopping or relax before we head off for a magnificent Welsh Banquet and entertainment in the undercroft (cellar) of Cardiff Castle. This delightful evening has been a highlight on past tours and is sure to be a highlight this year.(world leaders including US President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper had dinner at Cardiff Castle in September 2014 at the historic Nato Wales Summit) Guests are welcomed with mead tasting in the bar, before being led into the 15th- Century Undercroft Hall for a four-course feast of local dishes. The menu currently starts with Glamorgan sausages with a delicious red onion marmalade, followed by two substantial courses of cawl and chicken. Finally, end the dining experience with an unusual honey cream mousse with a hint of Welshcake. Day 06 Sep 23, Sun: CARDIFF LIVERPOOL Ffarwelio a theithio'n ddiogel - Farewell and Safe Travels We bid farewell to our Welsh hosts after breakfast this morning as we head toward the industrial city of Liverpool. It is a long driving day, but we will be stopping frequently to enjoy the beautiful scenery, sample some local fare and do a little browsing. We will arrive in Liverpool late afternoon
to get checked in to our hotel. No group dinner is planned this evening, so you have free time to explore the downtown area. Perhaps you might choose to drop in to the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, buy a few souvenirs, and hear some local bands where the Beatles used to play. (B) Our scenic drive today will take us through the Brecon Beacons, Hay on Wye and Shropshire in south central Wales, with wild landscapes and villages steeped in history. This breath-taking scenery is filled with lush green hills and natural mountains. Have your cameras ready to capture Norman castles and neolithic stone circles, meandering rivers and traditional market towns. Day 07 Sep 24, Mon: LIVERPOOL MANCESTER Today we enjoy an in depth sightseeing tour of Liverpool before heading the short distance to Manchester later this afternoon. After a wonderful day in Liverpool, you will no doubt be ready for an early night. We will get checked in to our Manchester hotel and then enjoy a group supper at the hotel.(b,d) Enjoy a panoramic tour of Liverpool There are few cities with as many iconic features as Liverpool. During the last two centuries, this northern port city has been a maritime powerhouse, home of The Beatles and two world-class football teams, and the European Capital of Culture. The Albert Dock complex sits in redeveloped warehouses and offers a collection of excellent museums, including The Beatles Story, and a wonderful selection of unique shops, cafes and restaurants. You can see the famous Ferry Cross the Mersey from here. Our expert guide will point out childhood homes of some of the FabFour, take us past Strawberry Field (Strawberry Field was the name of a Salvation Army children's home just around the corner from Lennon's childhood home in Woolton, a suburb of Liverpool) and Penny Lane. John Lennon and Paul McCartney used to meet at Penny Lane to catch a bus into town, and the statue of Eleanor Rigby on Stanley Street, dedicated to all the lonely people. Visit the Beatles Story Discover everything you will ever need to know about the world's greatest rock band at the award-winning The Beatles Story in Liverpool's Mersey-side Albert Dock. The Beatles met as teenagers in the maritime city of Liverpool before shooting to worldwide fame with hits like She Loves You and Love Me Do. This UNESCO City of Music has become intrinsically linked with the Fab Four and it's only right that the
world's largest permanent Beatles exhibition is located on the city's iconic riverside. The Beatles Story explores the lives, careers and times of The Beatles right from their childhoods to world domination and beyond into their successful solo careers through fascinating exhibits and interactive themed areas. Take a ride on the Yellow Submarine, order a coffee at the Casbah Cafe and go behind the scenes at Abbey Studios for a unique Beatles experience. Day 08 Sep 25, Tue: MANCHESTER Today we focus on everything Coronation Street related. We will stop on our tour this morning at a lovely garden centre owned by our friend and Coronation Street expert Mark Llewellyn before going to the ITV Coronation Street studios for our private group visit. Mark will give us lots of wonderful insider information about Coronation Street personalities and locations, and you will have an opportunity to pick up some unique gift items from his large and unique shop, and grab a bite for lunch at the cafe. Mark was the former manager for Roy Barraclough who played the character of Alec Gilroy in the late 90 s, and is full of amazing tidbits to share. Make sure your cameras and phones are fully charged today, as you will have some memorable photo opportunities with many of the cast of Coronation Street. In the past we have met as many as 25 of the current actors, and our group have also appeared in a special ITV documentary called Rita and Me celebrating Barbara Knox s character Rita. ITV always makes a special effort when we visit, and has never disappointed us! After our studios visit, you will have some free time to explore the city a bit on your own before our coach arrives to take us to our special dinner this evening! (B,SD) CORONATION STREET is the longest running TV series in the world, and began broadcasting on December 9, We visit both the inside and outside sets of the Street, and will hopefully be able to see actual filming (depending on the day s schedule) ITV does not know what will be taking place until approximately two weeks in advance, therefore we can never guarantee, but our past tours were thrilled to have been present on the set during filming and had the opportunity to meet many of the current actors, pose for some photos and a brief chat. An absolutely wonderful exclusive visit and the dream of die- hard Corrie fans. Some of the actors in the past have even come in on their day off because they knew we were coming. How nice is that! Our Happy Neville - Tour Host Our Happy Marilyn - Tour Manager Our Happy Tour Guests Day 9 Sep 26, Wed: MANCHESTER WINDERMERE EDINBURGH This morning we will depart Manchester early and make our way to Edinburgh. After the excitement of the past two days it will be a nice driving day through Northern England and the beautiful Lake District in the County of Cumbria. We will travel through some picturesque villages and stop to admire the scenery, perhaps grab a pint in one of the many pubs in the area, and stop in the lovely village of Windermere en route to Scotland. We check in to our central Edinburgh hotel, and enjoy our first group dinner together in Scotland. ( B,D)
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes. Every year, some 15 million people pitch up to explore the region's fells and countryside and it's not hard to see why. Ever since the Romantic poets arrived in the 19th century, its postcard panorama of craggy hilltops, mountain tarns and glittering lakes has been stirring the imaginations of visitors.many people visit for the region's literary connections: among the many writers who found inspiration here are William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Arthur Ransome and, of course, Beatrix Potter, a lifelong lover of the Lakes. Ceud mìle fàilte!- A hundred thousand welcomes! Day 10 Sep 27, Thu: EDINBURGH We set off after a hearty Scottish breakfast to explore Edinburgh by coach on this panoramic city tour of the inspiring capital of Scotland. From the historical closes of the Old Town to the large avenues of New Town, explore an outstanding city of contrasts. Along its main thoroughfare, Princes Street, you will witness the most unique sight of Edinburgh Castle, majestically dominating both Old and New Town. See Calton Hill and its National Monument, rightfully giving Edinburgh its nickname: the "Athens of the North", Grassmarket, The Palace of Holyroodhouse, the National Museum of Scotland, The Royal Mile, and of course famous Edinburgh Castle. This evening you will have free to do more exploring on your own, so no group dinner is planned. ( B ) Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town, behind Edinburgh Castle, the Grassmarket area is one of the most vibrant, picturesque and lively areas of the city. A paradise of independent merchants, designers and artisans, the Grassmarket is simply bursting with some of the best shopping Edinburgh has to offer. The area is well known for being home to some of the best restaurants in Edinburgh as well as some of the most animated and eclectic bars. Originally a marketplace for horse and cattle from the 14 th century right up until the early 19 th century, the Grassmarket was also renowned for its public executions. The Royal Mile in the Old Town is culturally and historically important to the city and jam packed with things to see and do. A Scots mile long, and connecting two royal residences (the Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House, which is the Queen s official residence in Scotland), it is also home to parliaments old and new, law courts, a cathedral and churches, and a vast range of visitor attractions, walking tours, shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.
