MONTHLY REPORT FOR CHEVELEY/DULLINGHAM BEAT November 2010 Cheveley, Ashley, Kirtling, Upend, Woodditton, Little Ditton, Saxon Street, Stetchworth, Stetchworth Ley, Dullingham, Dullingham Ley, Cross Green, Brinkley, Burrough Green, Westley Waterless and Newmarket. Hello everyone We have had 12 crimes reported in our area for November. Editors note; none was in our four villages. If you would like the full report please contact me. Ten were thefts/attempted thefts from garden sheds and vans where tools and lead and copper items were taken. One was damage to a brick wall and one was theft of 500 litres of oil from an oil tank. I will continue, however, with my usual daily high visibility patrols throughout the villages in our area, paying particular attention to those recognised hot spots and vulnerable properties and businesses. As always, should you see or hear anything suspicious in the meantime, then please do not hesitate to contact us on It seems that the winter is finally here! I hope you are all keeping warm? Can I ask that if any of you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours that you keep a close eye on them during this cold spell? Keeping warm over winter months can help prevent colds, flu or more serious health problems like pneumonia. Most pedestrians are hit by vehicles because the driver does not see them until it is too late. Pedestrians and cyclists should wear bright or fluorescent clothing during the day and light-coloured clothing and a reflector (for example, an armband) at night. When crossing a road, never assume that a driver has seen you. Ensure your child is taught to avoid crossing roads near the crest of a hill, at a bend, or between parked cars because it is harder for drivers to see him/her in these places. Regards PCSO Mags Harvey and PC Andy Martin ~ RECYCLING Brown sack dates for January are Thursdays 13 th & 27 th. MOBILE LIBRARY The Mobile Library will be at Brinkley Memorial Hall On the 4 th Wednesday of each month between pm. January 26 th 2011 ~
3 DISTRICT COUNCIL NOTES DECEMBER 2010 Check the Scores on the Doors Residents in East Cambridgeshire can find out how clean the premises are, and how well food is handled, before they eat a meal at any restaurant, take-away or other place that sells food. 'Scores on the Doors' is a nationwide initiative that helps us all to know about the places where we are going to eat. At the end of a routine food hygiene inspection, officers from the council rate premises in line with the Food Standards Agency statutory code of practice to identify how often it should be inspected and what risk it poses to public health. Part of this score will now be converted into a star rating from zero to five stars at and premises will also be able to display their star rating in their window. Officers are warning landlords that the authority will not hesitate to claim costs back if the authority carries out repairs or works in default. Asbestos in the workplace still a problem Recent inspections of local businesses in the district have found that only 30 per cent of firms are complying with asbestos regulations. Officers from the Commercial Team in Environmental Services at ECDC and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) carried out targeted inspections of businesses within the district. After an information drop to companies in Soham and Burwell, officers visited 26 premises. Only eight businesses were complying with the regulation. Those businesses not complying are given 21 days to achieve full compliance, when a further visit is made. Any non-compliance will then result in enforcement action by the Council. The visits are to make sure that businesses are not exposing employees to potentially harmful asbestos fibres and they are complying with their duty to manage any asbestos present in their premises. Minor highways improvement schemes Nine small schemes have been approved for funding by the District Council out of forty-one requested by Parish Councils. These are in Brinkley, Ely, Haddenham, Reach, Soham, Sutton, Wentworth, Wicken and Wooditton. The schemes will receive 60,000 in total, with a similar sum provided by the County Council, and 1 per elector by the Parish Councils. The schemes are usually for the improvement of road safety, footways and cycle paths. Previously, such schemes have been approved by a joint committee of District and County Councillors. In future, the District's Environment and Transport Committee will approve those proposed by District and County officers who will rate schemes in accordance with a set of agreed criteria. Neighbourhood Panels will also be invited to be involved in making proposals, as these have proved to be a very effective forum for requests from residents. 4 ELLESMERE GARDEN CLUB In the New Year we welcome Margaret Lynch who will give a talk with the intriguing title Cheat in the Garden. Come along on Wednesday 12 th January, 8pm in the Ellesmere Centre, if you want to find out how! The following month sees our AGM on 16 th February. Don t worry, the business part doesn t take up much time, and to follow we have some light entertainment, which just may involve the odd glass of wine You ll have to join us to find out! This meeting is your chance to vote for the committee and have a say in future events. New members of the committee will be most welcome, as will new club members, and that holds true at any time of the year. So do come and join us, and invite your friends. If you want to know more about the Garden Club just get in touch with Sandie on ~ BROWNIES NEWS The Brownies have all been very excited in the run up to Christmas, and to add to this excitement they have been making and decorating their own mini Christmas cakes. Done over the course of three weeks, they began by making the mixture and putting it into their cake tins (baked bean tins to you and me!), which the leaders took home and cooked for them. Week two saw the marzipan layer being added, which the girls thoroughly enjoyed, even if they did get extremely sticky with apricot glaze! The completion of the cakes, done on the last meeting before Christmas, allowed the girls to bring in their own Christmas decorations to put on their cake, as well as adding the icing, which brought the cake making to a happy end, with the girls taking them home with proud smiles on their faces. This term also saw one of our girls go up to guides, and the enrolment of four new brownies, a wonderful addition to our ever changing unit! Is your daughter between the ages of 7 and 10? Burrough Green Brownies have spaces available. Contact our Brown Owl, Margaret Whalley, on (01638) or margaretwhalley@tiscali.co.uk Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Burrough Green Brownies! Joanna Turvey Leader-in-Training ~ NEWS FROM LINTON VILLAGE COLLEGE Written on 10 December 2010 It is nearing the end of term, Christmas is approaching but this year there feels little joy in it all. The reason for this is that, once more, our school community is facing up to the deaths of two young people: Benn Joyce and Jess Gower. I d like to say a few words here about each of them and to publicly pass our condolences to the two families suffering the tragic loss of a child. We can t know how you feel, but we offer you our support and care. Benn, who died in such a distressing way in our village, went to the College some years ago. He was a tall, friendly, mature boy and very pleasant to talk to. He left us in Year 9 to live with his father and we saw little of him after that, but he returned to the village and made close friendships with many of our students past and present. His death was a real shock and it is at times like this that you are reminded of how important a sense of community is. everyone looking out for each other, standing side by side. Jess Gower s death was, sadly, not a shock, but the impact was as great. Jess was a Year 10 student at the College. She had been struggling with cancer for over 18 months, but finally lost this struggle just before Christmas. Jess was a popular girl: bright, caring and energetic. We had known how ill she was and her year group had organised a fun run in her honour to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust back in June. The staff and students at the College have been hoping and praying for her recovery, willing her all the way. Her bravery throughout each painful treatment was incredible. Her loss has been almost harder to bear because of this. Teenagers have an ability to support each other at times of crisis that inspires awe: they hug, cry and comfort their friends instinctively and on the occasions of both deaths I was left feeling proud of them as they reached out to include everyone in the wave of community warmth that enveloped us. 5 JANUARY SERVICES Sunday 2 nd January Epiphany Due to the extremely cold temperatures at the moment it seems sensible to cancel the 8am Holy Communion service at Burrough Green on the 2 nd January and heat only one church - 9am Holy Communion at Carlton. 9.00am Holy Communion Carlton 10.30am Morning Prayer Dullingham Isaiah 60:1-6 Ephesians 3:1-12 Sunday 9 th January The Baptism of Christ 9.00am Holy Communion Brinkley 11.00am Family Communion Dullingham Isaiah 42:1-9 Acts 10:34-43 Sunday 16 th January Epiphany am Family Communion Westley Waterless 10.30am Family Worship Burrough Green Isaiah 49:1-7 I Corinthians 1:1-9 Sunday 23 rd January Epiphany am Family Communion Stetchworth 10.15am Family Worship Dullingham 11.15am Family Worship Brinkley Isaiah 9: Corinthians 1: Sunday 30 th January Candlemas 10.30am Benefice Holy Communion Brinkley Malachi 3:1-5 Hebrews 2: 14 end Dear Friends, I write on a ridiculously cold night cocooned in the luxury of central heating, a thermal vest and a soft wool blanket wrapped around my shoulders. I really can t imagine how awful it must be to be homeless and on the streets in this kind of weather. Perhaps by the time you read this letter the freezing conditions will have abated. And so we find ourselves once again at the beginning, at that transitional point in time when we look back and take stock of all that has happened during the past year and also look forward wondering what the new year will bring. T.S. Elliot wrote that As we grow older/ the world becomes stranger, the pattern more complicated/of dead and living. All of us in our way will have had our births and deaths over this past year, some literal, some held only in the heart. I wonder what criteria we will use to evaluate our experiences over the past twelve months. What questions will we ask ourselves to ascertain if 2010 has been a good year; will we focus on success, - whatever that means, or an improvement in our circumstances? For some the past year will have been richly rewarding, for others a time of broken dreams and disappointment. Whatever the pattern of our life experience has been, rather than see that experience in terms of success or failure, perhaps the better question to ask is, did I live well? Living well has nothing to do with success nor indeed with loss, rather it is measure of our commitment to live as authentic human beings who respect and honour ourselves, each other, the created order and most importantly that spark of divine life that dwells deep within each and every one of us. Whether you subscribe to Christianity or not I hope you would agree that the great commandment to love God and to love your neighbour as yourself is a good one to follow if we want to live well. None of us knows what this New Year will bring, often we are presented with events that are outside our control and which we would not choose. But we do have a choice in how we respond; it isn t easy, but if we choose the way of living well then we are living the best way we can, with dignity and hope. If any of my thoughts resonate with you then may I commend a book to you: Living Well by Alan Hargrave, Canon Missioner at Ely Cathedral, it s very good. Happy New Year! Pauline revpauline@btinternet.com ~ BRINKLEY CAROLS The Brinkley evening of Carols and Readings was considered a huge success by all who attended. The choir from Cambridge sang extremely well under the direction of Tim Brown. Andrew Black, who sang in the choir and accompanied when required also played a brilliant Bach piano solo. Vivian Williams, who also sang in the choir, played an expert Cello Concerto by Bach. The readings by Brinkley Guides added much to the enjoyment of the evening. Thank you all. The enthusiastic audience excelled in their carols too, particularly after the mulled wine in the interval! All in all, a lovely start to Christmas. Well done to Paddy for organising it. ~
6 SUFFOLK LINKS - THREE TOWNS SERVICE A new demand-responsive transport (DRT) service called Suffolk Links Three Towns is now available, and it is open to people in the villages shown on the attached map. (Editor s note I can t reproduce the map but Brinkley, Burrough Green, and Carlton are within its boundaries. Cambridgeshire residents can access this new service on a first come first served basis.) This service aims to provide transport to and from Newmarket and Haverhill to catch onward bus and train services to Bury St. Edmunds, Cambridge and beyond. This new service is available from 7am through to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and is operated by The Voluntary Network based in Newmarket in conjunction with Suffolk County Council. The service works by passengers booking a place on the vehicle by telephone. The booking line is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and can receive bookings up to a week ahead of the date of travel. This service is open to those who are unable to access a bus service directly, instead it picks up passengers from pre-arranged, convenient points, including from people s homes. Where possible, the service will attempt to link with conventional bus services rather than offer an end to end journey. The fares charged are comparable to local bus fares, concessionary bus passes are accepted, and through tickets can be purchased for use on connecting services. The vehicle is fully accessible with low steps, hand rails and a lift for wheelchair access if assistance is required then please request this beforehand when booking a place on the vehicle. Please note that this service works on a first come, first served basis, and that this service is wholly provided by Suffolk County Council. Contact the Suffolk Links booking line on to book a seat, or see nd_responsive_transport for further information.
