P5. DORIS March 2007 David Jones. David Jones Update. Work on Pullman Car 'Doris' was not able to be completed for the 'Southern at War' weekend on the Bluebell Railway (May 12/13 th ). The car was not able to be open to the public for the weekend as originally planned. It had been decided to tidy up the west side as well as repainting the complete east side as previously advised, so the extra work has extended the programme in the paint shop. Doris was shunted out of the paintshop on Monday May 14 th, and put back into platform 1 at Horsted Keynes Station. The finish is superb, and now needs to be lined and lettered, which has already been started by one of our younger C & W Volunteers, Stuart Fielder. The photograph, taken on May 20 (Page 7) shows the lining already done at the north vestibule door. This is a more satisfactory arrangement otherwise the paint shop would be tied up for tasks which can be done elsewhere, especially as there is a backlog of painting to do on the 100 seaters and the Maunsell carriages.

P6. cd.jones2007 DORIS now located in Platform 1 with the first lining applied around the vestibule door. Look Back At Pullman June 125 Years Ago. June 2 nd. 8 P8. Recommended Free Newsletters Available on the Inter-Net. Welcome to the Railway Herald website. Railway Herald was the first publically available, professionally produced digital magazine in the UK to be dedicated to the railway enthusiast when it was first launched back in February The magazine's prime aim was to report on the 'key' news stories from around the National Network over the past seven days. This together with a smart selection of high quality digital photographs combined to produce a product, which at the time was unlike anything else available. Today the magazine, which remains free of charge, continues to go from strength to strength and its circulation now reaches thousands of readers with an interest in the UK railway scene, not only across the United Kingdom, but also across the world. The role of Railway Herald has changed since its conception. Originally its distribution was purely limited to friends of the editor and its focus was national network news. At the start of July 2006, its distribution reaches over 18 countries and the focus is on reporting news and information from around the national network as well as the heritage lines and featuring the very best in digital photography. The magazine is very much produced by enthusiasts for the enjoyment of enthusiasts and as such, we welcome your contributions, whether in the form of news and information or through the field of digital photography. Interested? Then why not download the latest issue from the link.

P9. Preservation News. ARIES. Patrick O Connor reports with photographs. On Tuesday May 8 th ARIES traveled down the M5 to its new home. Alas the blazing sun and hard ground have been replaced by continuous rain and the site at near Portsmouth Arms became a quagmire. This then caused problems unloading the car which remained on the low loader. It was hoped that the car will be in place by the end of the week. cp.oconnor2007 ARIES has now joined MAID of KENT (ex FORMOSA) at Portsmouth Arms in Devon. Work to stabilise the vehicle is essential as ARIES suffers from numerous leaks owing to defective seals around the roof vents and windows plus heavy corrosion below the rain strip at cant rail level. In addition, many of the steel screws securing the panels have rusted and 'popped', adding further to the problem.

P10. cp.oconnor2007 Internally, what little remained of the interior was stripped out for the removal of asbestos whilst ARIES was on the East Lancashire Railway. Structurally, this has revealed that ARIES was originally designed to be the same as the Birmingham built Kitchen Firsts. There is evidence of framing and panelling being altered and plated over in favour of the large kitchen/pantry arrangement prior to entering service. Most of the internal saloon and coupe panelling has survived but there are no internal doors and an external door is missing. I'm hoping for a long dry Summer to get to grips with arresting the deterioration whilst pressing on with re-panelling MAID OF KENT.'

P12. MONTANA. Gudmund Olafsson reports with photographs. Everything went very well although Bob - the driver from Allely's - thought this was the tightest delivery he'd ever made. He didn't really have any millimeters to spare and it took an awfully long time!! The plan to renovate starts tomorrow, Monday (14 th ), with a roof inspection followed swiftly by repairs to the roof and recovering with! Alwitra", a German wonder material, with which the other Pullman roofs are covered. Not really railway stuff but then, they are being used as accommodation, not vehicles and have to look good and be serviceable with low maintenance. Then comes the internal partitioning, which uses all the natural partitions in the ceilings to split the carriage into 2 rooms with bathrooms. It's almost as if whoever designed these carriages, intended them to be used for this purpose in their final years - changing them to accommodation does no damage to their original form. With the interior s partitioned, we will concentrate on her exterior makeup with fresh coach paint, transfers and coach striping/lettering. She should be finished in less than 2 months (I'm an optimist) but we cannot put her to use until we've re-built the Stationmasters Lamp Store. The original Stationmasters Lamp Store was demolished a great many years ago, but we now have planning permission to resurrect it, and this will house our new heating boilers, a brand new water distribution system (the old system will not cope with the increase in guest numbers), electrical distribution, a new laundry and also a disabled WC facility. Building this may take longer than the 2 months, but Montana will not be operational until it is finished. I'm hoping everything will be up and running by sometime in August. I attach a few photos.

P18. Pullman Society Meetings D.Jones. It was interesting to see the photograph of Doug Lindsay and the late Ray Addy in Coupe News No. 50 on the occasion of the first Pullman Society meeting at the Kent and East Sussex Railway back in April The Society had only just been founded by Ray Addy the previous year, and in Contact No. 1, the single A4 sheet news sheet dated November 1986, it was hoped that more outings to locations of Pullman interest could be arranged. In the event, the next annual meeting, which Ray called the First AGM, wasn t until September 1990 in Pullman Car Bertha at the Bluebell Railway, courtesy of Ray Martin, the then owner of this ex-6 PUL Car. A trip was made to Horsted Keynes to see progress on the restoration of Fingall, and an internal inspection of the Night Ferry Wagons-Lits sleeping car No was also included. As is normal, the weekend of the AGM also included the opportunity for a meal in Pullman luxury. cd.lindsay2007 Pullman Society AGM Mid Hants Railway on Saturday May 19 th, Pullman lunch within CAR No.351 prior to departure from Arlesford station for Alton

P19. I detail below all subsequent Pullman Society AGMs, which are always based at or near venues where Pullman Cars are located, may be of interest:- 2 nd AGM 18 May 1991 at the Colne Valley Railway 3 rd AGM 21 August 1992 at the NRM and Keighley and Worth Valley Railway 4 th AGM 15 May 1993 at the Kent and East Sussex Railway (Meeting at the White Lion) 5 th AGM 21 May 1994 at the Bluebell Railway (Meeting in Training School) 6 th AGM 20 May 1995 at Pullman Lodge Motel, Seaburn and NYMR. 7 th AGM 18 May 1996 at the North Norfolk Railway (with Murder Mystery) 8 th AGM 17 May 1997 at the Swanage Railway 9 th AGM 16 May 1998 at the North York Moors Railway 10 th AGM 22 May 1999 at the Bluebell Railway (Meeting in Training School) 11 th AGM 20 May 2000 at the Kent and East Sussex Railway (Meeting at The Vine) 12 th AGM 19 May 2001 at the Swanage Railway (Meeting at the Gillan Hotel) 13 th AGM 11 May 2002 at the KWVR (Meeting at Park Drive Hotel, Bradford) 14 th AGM 17 May 2003 at the Bluebell Railway (Meeting at the Birch Hotel) 15 th AGM 22 May 2004 at the Pullman Lodge Motel, Seaburn 16 th AGM 21 May 2005 at the Kent and East Sussex Railway (Meeting at Station) 17 th AGM 20 May 2006 at the Bluebell Railway (Meeting at Sheffield Park Station) 18 th AGM 19 May 2007 at the Mid Hants Railway (Meeting at Alresford Station) At the 7 th AGM at Sheringham, a cake in the form of Pullman Car Bertha was cut at a ceremony in the Beaumaris Hotel to celebrate 10 years of the Society, reflecting its formation in 1986 at the Kent and East Sussex Railway, the pioneer of Pullman Car operation on preserved railways. Flying Scotsman North America Tour Ex-British Rail Coaching Stock. Still no news as yet on the coaches and what has become of them or if they still exist.

P20. Pantry Talk. George Moon writes. Hi Terry Thanks for another good Coupe News. A couple of points arise: on the restoration of Car No. 14, whilst the refitting of the buffers on the observation end from the other end is a practical way out of an immediate problem, these will doubtless have round heads as fitted to J Class Cars, whereas the observation ends carried oblong (oval) buffers. As I recall, these ex- LNWR under frames carried long LNWR pattern coach buffers (as on J Class FORMOSA) so if anyone knows of any of these that might be available, no doubt Steve Doughty will be glad to hear, otherwise I imagine they will have to get some more made. Glen Woods writes. Dear Terry, With reference to Glencoe within Coupé News, I have the following information:- From the Notes of Terrence Barry:- 15/7/1919 Special Train for General Pershing, Dover to Victoria : BKV 98, Glencoe, Scotia, CBB 914. From the notes of R.C. Riley:- Stored at Polegate April From the Appendices to the Carriage Working Notices:- 31/5/ , Allocated to Car G on the Bournemouth Belle. Replaced as Car G, between June and September 1953, by an unknown Car. Note Car G was not included every day, running at the weekends or when ordered. Railway Observer (November 1952). 27/9/52: Bournemouth Belle 94, 45, 7, 47, 98, 294, Glencoe, Hibernia, Sunbeam, Sorrento, 96, 95 With respect to the Cars originally ordered for the Caledonian Railway but diverted to the South Eastern should not Scotia also be included?

P21. Peter Hall responds with regard to EMERALD (II) and the NRM. Terry To be honest, I share your concerns. I am getting increasingly disillusioned with the way the NRM is progressively disposing of its carriage collection, particularly the vehicles acquired during the 1970's. The logic for acquisition at the time can be seen, to give a balanced representation of designs and styles from the grouping era and after. But the list of disposals is ever increasing. In addition to EMERALD I am aware of:- GWR 9605, Cambrian Railway 238 LMS 7863, 8207, 30272, LNER LNWR BR 1100, 4286,13252 NORD 7122 SR 1456, 4920, having been disposed of, not all to what I consider to be good homes. It is not only carriages that are disappearing, at least three locomotives, HE 3696/1950, RSH 7746/1954 and NORD have gone along with a number of wagons. I am surprised the commercial magazines have not made more of a fuss about it. It certainly struck a raw nerve with Richard Gibbon a few years ago when he visited the local RCTS branch a few years ago. Peter Elson responds with regard to EMERALD (II) and the NRM: -. Your editorial is very pertinent about the safety keeping of the national rail collection. I am astonished that NMR has sold Emerald to West Coast. I would have thought Mark 1 Metro-Camm Pullmans have as much justification to be kept as any other part of the collection. Wouldn't this car and Eagle been ideal to use on the Flying Scotsman Scarborough excursions?

P22. CAN YOU HELP Reply to the Editorial Address. 1. Kevin Collins Car CARINA. I was given your address by Murray Brown, I am looking for information and photographs of Pullman car Carina. I am involved with forming a charitable trust with the aim of restoring the car back to ex works condition, some work will be starting in the next few weeks to prevent more deterioration. cg.moon(3139)2007 George Moon captured S307S (CARINA) as withdrawn in the company of other ex- Golden Arrow cars at Lovers Walk, Brighton on November 5 th 1972.

P David Lewis Manchester Pullman Formations and Catering Vehicles. I hope I am not being a nuisance but could you answer me a couple of questions? Mk.3 Manchester Pullmans 1985 to Did these trains have catering vehicles in them, if so what type? Do you know the actual make up of the above rakes? I know they are not proper Pullmans but I hope you can help. David Lewis Clive Warnford responds. In answer to David Lewis query, the Mk3 Pullmans, were really only used as the Liverpool Pullman, and Manchester Pullman. The coaches were designated Mk3B and were FO's. Their numbers in 1986/7 were as follows; William Ewart Gladstone (Liverpool Pullman) Thomas Brassey (Liverpool Pullman) John Lennon (Liverpool Pullman) Sir Richard Arkwright (Manchester Pullman) John Owens of Longsight Depot (Manchester Pullman) Francis Egerton (Manchester Pullman) of Longsight Depot (Manchester) Elizabeth Gaskell of Longsight Depot (Manchester Pullman) James Joule (Manchester Pullman) Kitty Wilkinson (Liverpool Pullman) William Roscoe (Liverpool Pullman) Sir John Barbirolli (Manchester Pullman) Henry Doulton of Longsight Depot (Manchester Pullman) Sir William Fairbairn (Manchester Pullman) Sir John Brunner (Liverpool Pullman) P George Stubbs (Liverpool Pullman) Sir Stanley Matthews of Longsight Depot (Manchester Pullman) Ernest Rutherford (Manchester Pullman) L.S. Lowry (Manchester Pullman) Arnold Bennett (Manchester Pullman) There were a considerable number of Mk3B's produced but only those listed above were "Pullman's"

P24. By 1990 some had been de-named but all were serviced and maintained at Wembley InterCity Depot and by 1991 all had been de-named and some had gone back to Longsight Depot (Manchester), these being; All were no longer designated as Pullman just plain FO InterCity West Coast Mainline. Only Carriage Working Notices will give the formation of each train, which will also give the catering vehicles, although it can be suspected that the catering vehicles were probably Mk3A RFM's which had been converted from FO's. From 1989 a new batch of Pullmans came in the form of Mk4 stock, these were designated Pullman Open First and all were at Bounds Green Depot. Since the fragmentation of the railways, most have now been rebuilt with new interiors. I hope all this helps, Many thanks Clive. John Dedman responds. I see in Coupe News 51 there was a request for info on Mk3 Pullmans and catering cars, these photos on Steve Jones site show Mk1 and Mk3 catering cars in the formation. allery.co. uk/class86/ 1280/sj jpg allery.co. uk/class86/ 1280/sj jpg ts.co.uk/ 1280/sj jpg ts.co.uk/ 1280/sj jpg ts.co.uk/ 1280/sj jpg Regards John Many thanks John.

P David Cooke (Tasmania Australia) Brighton Belle. I am in the process of trying to get specific drawings of the Brighton Belle cars to help me complete and detail a set of the old Leeds model company O gauge sets. I wish to finish and detail them to a higher standard than their basic finish. Can you assist in pointing me to a source of scale drawings especially showing some of the basic under floor detail I am in contact with David Peacock of the Leeds Steadman Trust who has given me all the detail on their basic layout but I feel they will look so much better with some super detailing Thank you in advance 4. Brian Kaye Pullman Car Types. Is there a list of Pullman car types and their differences i.e. K type, J type etc? I have most of the books, but I don t recall seeing a "type" list. Bob Lumb of Leeds has forwarded the above photograph of ex Mk1 Pullman S/No.323 WREN in its final operational use as RDB LABORATORY 14 ACOUSTIC GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT DIVISION, DERBY. 30 P30. A Car Called Constance. My personal thanks to Jim Greaves and Charles Long for forwarding this new Pullman related historical book to me for review. The book is A4 soft back of which only the front and back covers offer any colour images, but this should not deter you from purchasing this historical book.

P31. Covering in some depth within the 44 pages of both text and photographs the History of the Gilbert Cars from the days of the South Eastern Railway to those of the Southern Railway. The photographs date from introduction in 1892 to 1997 when CONSTANCE was moved to its present home on the Bluebell Railway for restoration in the future. The book covers the history of these cars both in text and photographs which are contained within two parts giving 10 chapters. Part 1 contains 6 chapters, covering the history of these unique cars in some depth and not just old material being recycled, the detailed research undertaken for this book has detailed some new information and photographs. Part 2 contains 4 chapters, and will be of great use for the modeller wishing to build a model of one or all of these cars by the selection of drawings offered. CAR No.32 at the Gilbert Car Works in the USA. The car has been trialassembled and will be dismantled prior to shipment. In 1918 after rebuilding by the Pullman Company the car was named CARMEN and was destroyed in the Sevenoaks accident in cm.parker Collection. These cars were seen as competition at that time of introduction by the Pullman Company but in October 1918 following 4 years of being out of use due the First - World War. The cars were then purchased by the Pullman Company and a second lease of life commenced for a further 9 to 12 years until the last car was withdrawn in A book worthy of a place in your collection.
