Its strategic position on the Firth of Forth meant it soon became a royal castle. Today, there is a colourful blend of traditional formal gardens and more contemporary plantings, including as the Guinness Book of Records testifies the world s longest herbaceous border. Phone for details 7 linlithgow palace The magnificent ruins of Linlithgow Palace are set in the peel beside a loch. Most of the Stewart monarchs lived here and numerous renovations to the palace s grand façades and chambers were carried out as each sought to create the ideal modern palace. Admire the stunning courtyard fountain which has been carefully restored and explore objects from the past in our display. The loch is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the extensive wildfowl population. Seton Collegiate Church has a 15th-century chancel and sacristy as well as beautiful stained glass windows. 1m SE of Cockenzie off the A198 Postcode EH32 0PG Telephone tantallon castle A formidable stronghold set atop cliffs on the Firth of Forth, Tantallon Castle was the seat of the Douglas earls of Angus. Little survives of the abbey church apart from the north transept, but fine examples of ecclesiastical architecture and masonry remain, and the chapter house retains plaster and paintwork dating back to the abbey s foundation. 8m SE of Melrose on the B6404, near St Boswells (turn left onto the B6356) Postcode TD6 0RQ Telephone Open all year 12 hermitage castle An awesome, eerie ruin, set in a lonely spot, Hermitage Castle has a history filled with intrigue, murders, trysts, torture and treason. 5.5m NE of Newcastleton, B6399 Postcode TD9 0LU Telephone jedburgh abbey Jedburgh Abbey, founded in 1138, was a frequent target for invading English armies. Today, there is a cloister and herb garden to explore. The visitor centre contains a reconstruction of the abbey in its heyday and artefacts excavated from the site. The abbey was the burial place of Robert the Bruce s heart, now marked with a commemorative carved stone plaque within the grounds. It is unique in its striking triangular shape and is full of nooks and crannies just waiting to be explored. The present cathedral was built during the 13th to 15th centuries. It is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the 1560 Reformation virtually complete. Just the place for an unbeatable day out. The Renaissance Palace, which was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots, recently re-opened after a 12 million project to return it to its 16th-century magnificence. Visitors will be met by costumed characters in the roles of royalty, bodyguards and servants who give insights into the royal Stewart Court. A new exhibition focuses on the fascinating archaeology discovered during the palace refurbishment and younger visitors can get hands on with history in the Palace Vaults, where they can try on period costume and learn to play medieval instruments. Visitors can also explore the Great Hall, Chapel Royal, Kitchens, Regimental Museum and visit the Tapestry Studio where they can meet the weavers who are recreating the Hunt of the Unicorn Tapestries.
