Last year we rode in the Dales and the Peak District, and visited Donna Nook to see the seals, Whitby, the nuclear bunker at RAF Holmpton, Fort Paul near Hull and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Conningsby where we heard, but were just too late to see, the Lancaster bomber taking off for a trip to Jersey. We take turns in organising rides so look forward to another eclectic programme this year. Our rides are designed to be comfortable and interesting, with plenty of stops, and keeping to minor roads wherever possible. If you have a motorbike of any type, or are just interested in bikes and fancy joining us, get in touch with Ray Woodhams the coordinator ray.woodhams@gmail.com. At the moment we are exclusively male but would love to welcome women bikers to the group.

13 SPRING 2018 Barnsley & District U3A Page 27 Bus Pass Walkers Review In 2017 we had another successful year of enjoyable walks with our band of happy walkers. We seem blessed with good weather on Thursday mornings, as you can see from the photos. We take a steady walk, not over 5 miles and sometimes less, while enjoying a good old chat (as well as taking in the scenery) and look forward to a drink and a bun at a little cafe when we finish. If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact either myself or Marj Wallace and you will be made most welcome. Don t forget though, you will need a good pair of walking shoes and maybe a walking pole, as sometimes we do encounter the odd ups and downs! We make a stop half way through our walk for a breather and/or a snack or drink, so if you wish don t forget to bring these along. Our schedule of walks for the Spring period is set out on the opposite page. KEEP ON WALKING!!! REMEMBERING THE FALLEN Robert Green Some members of the BU3A Family History Group, who regularly meet at Dodworth library, have been researching the lives of the WW1 servicemen named on the Dodworth memorial. They have been remembering each man on the 100th anniversary of their deaths by placing a remembrance cross at the memorial, and then on the last Sunday of that month hold a community service of remembrance for each of those men. They attempt to connect with family members of the servicemen and invite those relatives to join them for the service together with members of the community. Following the service the community, and any living relatives they have been able to connect with, retire to the Dodworth Methodist Chapel for refreshments where they can see the results of the groups researches into the lives of the men, their involvement in the war and the circumstances surrounding their death together with where they are buried or remembered, creating a life story behind each of the engraved names. courte- the Westby and Lant family. Photo sy of On the 30th December they remembered Lt Thomas Westby MC, MiD, RMD. Thomas was an ex Holgate Grammar School pupil, the son of the manager of Dodworth Colliery. He was the highest decorated Royal Marine from Barnsley and the only man from Barnsley to be commissioned directly into the Royal Marines. Because the last Sunday of the month fell on New Year s Eve the group decided to hold the Remembrance Service alongside placing the Remembrance Cross on Saturday 30th December, which was the day that Thomas Westby died. At the end of their researches, the group have archived all their research material within Barnsley Archives and in some form online. Some of the group members are also developing an exciting Oral History project, capturing the memories of local residents - a time consuming and meticulously detailed exercise. Find out more by coming to their presentation at the monthly meeting on 14th May.

15 SPRING 2018 Barnsley & District U3A Page 29 NEW MEMBERS LINK GROUP The first New Members Link in 2018 was well attended with 16 people; of the 5 prospective new members 4 signed up to join us. We started the meeting differently this time by giving a short talk on the history of the U3A which was well received by all members. Our celebrated 1000th member Robert Docker was given a round of applause when he stood up and bowed! It was a very enjoyable evening, with lots of ideas shared and loads of interest shown in the groups that we have available. I m sure quite a few of our Co-ordinators will be getting calls with requests to join their groups, and that s how it should be!! Molly and I would like to thank all these lovely new members for attending the meeting. Eveline Mirfin and Molly Mannion, Coordinators The Literature Group We do things by terms in the Literature group. We spend a term on each author that we study long enough to find out a lot about them, and not too long to get bored. That s the theory, anyway. We have studied the Brontes in our first term, and D H Lawrence in our second. For the Summer term, we are going to look at George Orwell. He wrote Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four, as well as a lot of other stuff. Several of his terms have entered our everyday life - what about Room 101 for example, or Big Brother? Orwell is a particularly interesting person. He was educated at Eton, but spent most of his life campaigning for the poor. He even spent time in Barnsley observing the life of coal miners. I love him. Don t worry too much if you don t have much time to read. We have videos and recordings of the books. Now I haven t read Orwell for a thousand years, but I will between now and our Summer Term. You bet. We meet at Monk Bretton Methodist Church on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 2 pm, but we take the school holidays off. Well, you do, if you are a student, don t you. Give us a try if you are half way interested and you can escape grandchildren duties for a couple of hours. Beth Rudkin, Coordinator

16 Page 30 Barnsley & District U3A SPRING 2018 DIGITAL CHAMPIONS Did you know that as a member of the Development Team one of my roles is to liaise with the Digital Champions? But who are the Digital Champions (other than being whizzes with computers)? How did they come into existence, and how have they developed over time? I spoke with Jenni Jarvis, one of the Digital Champions, who gave me a synopsis as to the remit of the team. Here is her report: The first 2 Digital Champions were recruited in November 2015, as part of the Council s Digital Development Team, to support its target of Digital by Default by To achieve this target, the council is bringing more council services online so they can be accessed easily and conveniently by those customers who are able to use online services. We were recruited to support Barnsley residents who are not confident enough yet to access our services online, and are at risk of digital exclusion. We do this in a number of ways: through sessions, 6 week online basics courses, and workshops/bespoke sessions for community groups, charities and anyone who would benefit from engaging with us! We have previously run sessions for church groups, charities, assisted living complexes, residential homes, the food bank, job clubs and we support at the Job centre. We are currently engaged in the delivery of Online Banking training and have 3 specialised sessions, planned for February and March across Barnsley, to support residents who would like to learn how to bank online or through their mobile app. We are also supporting Barnsley residents to make and maintain Universal Credit claims as this new benefit is completely online: both the initial claim and the ongoing management of it. There is always one of us working at Barnsley Job Centre each day to support with this; at Wombwell Jenni has said she is quite happy to organize bespoke sessions for BU3A members. If anyone has any specific requirements you can contact the Digital Champions on Alternatively you can contact me and I would be happy to speak to them on your behalf. My details are on the contact sheet. Laraine Timms. Job Centre one afternoon a week, at Goldthorpe Library twice a week and Thurnscoe Library once a week. With just two Digital Champions in position for the first year, the demand for our services resulted in our team being expanded to 4 members in 2017 and we will shortly have a 5th member join us for a further 12 months.

17 SPRING 2018 Barnsley & District U3A Page 31 Review All four shows presented by the Abracadabra Magic Group were well received by external audiences and were a good advert for BU3A, especially the Magic Group. The last Magic Show in 2017 was presented by Geoff Pike and myself at Racecommon Road Friendship Club. The donations we received from all our audiences are earmarked for building up our library stock and shared resources. Our last BU3A presentation was filmed and can be accessed via YouTube (search Barnsley U3A Magic). We do not compel any of our members to perform. Members join the group to do their own thing - for some it s just about learning a bit for the pleasure of it, or to show grandchildren; for others it s that but also performing. We are all different and thank goodness we are! Mac McKechnie, Coordinator MAGIC IN PENISTONE! As part of the Penistone Social Inclusion Project, delivered by Age UK Barnsley, we provided a Christmas Party for more than 60 older residents of Penistone and the surrounding area. A tasty buffet was provided followed by an amazing magic show, provided free of charge by Mac McKechnie, a magician from Barnsley U3A. Mac s Magic tricks went down a treat and kept the audience baffled as to how they were done. Mac entertained us for nearly an hour telling the packed venue about the work of the U3A then proceeded to do an amazing range of baffling Magic effects from pouring a cup of water over a volunteers head (fortunately the water disappeared) to making a signed sealed playing card disappear and then turn up inside an envelope in his wallet. Two unsuspecting members of the audience were chosen to help him out and even they were none the wiser in knowing how he works his Magic. The audience were suitably impressed and showed their appreciation with a big round of applause. We would like to say a huge thankyou to Mac for helping make the event a success. Age UK Barnsley is a local charity that supports older people to enjoy their later life and we are very pleased to be working in the community in partnership with the Barnsley U3A. Karen Dennis Social Inclusion Worker for Age UK Barnsley The Magic Group Competition They are an amazing group, our Magicians. They have been going for less than a year, but they took part in a competition. It took place in Tescos Community Room and appropriately, it was judged by Lisa Hammond from Tescos and Alex Csurko from the Magic Circle. There was one other judge, from our U3A, just to make sure there was fair play - after all, they were performing for big prizes: amazing hampers donated by Tescos. There were two prizes. One was for the best presentation and the other for the most improved magician. There were five competitors and I have to say, I was impressed by them all and baffled by their magic. But it wasn t only about the skill of the trick. The judges were asked to consider the whole presentation the patter and engagement of the audience. The lovely Indu won the first category with her delightful engagement of the audience as well as sheer skill. In the second category, that of the most improved magician, Alan Swann bagged the prize. It was a really good occasion, complete with tea and coffee and cake. And it was a lot of fun, too. Beth Rudkin

18 Page 32 Barnsley & District U3A SPRING 2018 RESEARCH PROJECT The Role of Organised Tours and Travel for U3A Members Sheffield U3A has been invited to participate in a research project by Bournemouth University s Department of Tourism Management. The project aims to explore the role of organised tours and travel for U3A members. Organised tours and travel incorporates activities that are planned and offered under the auspices of U3A groups. These may be located close to home through for example, planned and led walking groups, local history and heritage themed visits (and open day events) as well as UK day visits and short breaks. The research will also explore overseas tours and travel organised by U3A groups and also exchange visits with U3A International members. If you would like to know more about this research and possibly participate please contact Dr Philip Long at plong@bournemouth.ac.uk Tuesday Book Forum April 3 Dangerous Crossing, Rachel Rhys This book is set in 1939 when Europe was on the brink of war. An ocean liner set sail for Australia and the protagonist meets new friends who would not have given her the time of day, on land. Her ship mates are all running away from tragedy and scandal and by the time the ship docks two passengers are dead, war has been declared and life will never be the same again May 1 Muriel Spark On the first of February this year Dame Muriel Spark was born exactly 100 years ago. This is a good enough reason for us to revisit this prolific writer. Her first novel was The Comforters written in 1957, whilst her hugely successful book was The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961). Other books include The Ballad of Peckham Rye (1960) and A Far Cry from Kensington (1988). In all, she wrote 22 novels as well as several books of poems and non-fiction. Choose one of Spark s books to read then bring to the discussion a short synopsis and your critical feelings about the work. June 5 When God was a Rabbit Sarah Winman This is a book about childhood, growing up, friendships, triumph, tragedy and everything in between. It is essentially a book about love and begins in England during the 1960s and 70s. July 3 Holy Island, L J Ross This is book one of the seven DCI Ryan Mysteries. DCI Ryan is taking sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective to holiday on Holy Island (Lindisfarne), when his peace there is shattered. A young woman is found dead among the ancient ruins of the Priory. LUCY TURNER, Concert Manager, Music in the Round Winner of the RPS Award for Chamber Music and Song and the David Bedford Award for Music Education Table and Board Games/ Chess/Mah Jong In the light of the recent Blue Planet II TV programme we (together with French Conversation with whom we share Birdwell on Wednesday afternoons) have decided to try to do our bit towards the reduction of plastic waste, so are in the process of moving away from our reliance on disposable plastic cups (in re-usable holders) for our tea/coffee. Instead, as is the case with some other BU3A groups, members are asked to bring their own cup/mug each time we meet. One small step, as someone once said, and we still manage to avoid the loss of valuable playing time to the task of washing up! Many thanks to the members of both groups for their help in clearing up after the sessions, and in particular to Victor and Richard for their efforts to restore to a workable condition our lockable filing cabinet (in which we keep our games stuff) which had been damaged during a couple of recent break-ins at Birdwell. Despite these setbacks, we continue to value this very flexible venue, one that is well suited to our very varying requirements. As always, new members are welcome. Martin E King, Co-ordinator Posh Puds The next session of Posh Puds will commence on 12 th April, The course comprises 6 sessions which take place on consecutive Thursdays. The sessions start at 10.00a.m and last until noon. The maximum number of people who can attend is limited to 6 people, as the course takes place in a domestic kitchen. We will work in pairs and prepare a pudding chosen by yourselves from some sample recipes. It is hoped that the course will be fun as well as giving you the opportunity to develop new skills. The address of the venue and directions will be supplied nearer the time. An interest list will be placed on the notice board at the monthly meetings in March and April 2018 or contact can be made direct with the co-ordinators Chrissie White or Helen Webber. Numbers are available on the contact list. An example of one of Chrissie s creations made for the Tai Chi group leader s birthday.

20 Page 34 Barnsley & District U3A SPRING 2018 Conversational French A Story of English-French Co-operation On alternate Wednesday afternoons we enjoy listening to, and sometimes singing along with, French songs. We often recognize the tunes and have some knowledge of the words. Why? Well, lots of French poetry has been set to music and there have been French adaptations of English/American songs as well as English adaptations of French songs. Music has crossed the channel in both directions. Some of our U3A members remember François Hardy s song Tous les Garçons et les Filles de mon Âge, ( All the Boys and Girls of my Age ) and of course Charles Trenet s La Mer ( Somewhere, Beyond The Sea ). Many of you will be familiar with Édith Piaf s Non, Je ne Regrette Rien ( No Regrets ) and you would have heard her song many times La Foule ( The Crowd ) before a certain football competition on BBC television (Euro 2016), although this time it was sung by Izzy Bizu. Charles Aznavour, now in his 94 th year, wrote the theme music for a British TV series called The Seven Faces of Woman. The song was recorded by him in French as Tous les Visages de l Amour, ( All the Faces of Love ). He also recorded it in English as She. Claude François (the young man who electrocuted himself by straightening a light fitting whilst in the shower in 1978), wrote Comme d Habitude ( As Usual ). The words were re-written by Paul Anka and became Frank Sinatra s My Way. François also adapted the American song If I had a Hammer which became Si J avais un Marteau as well as Walk Right In which in French is Marche Tout Droit. Gilbert Bécaud composed the music and Pierre Delanoë wrote the words for the song Et Maintenant. Bécaud sang the song and worked with Carl Sigman who wrote the English words as What Now My Love ; this was a hit for Shirley Bassey in 1962 and was also covered by Sonny and Cher and Elvis Presley. The Mirabeau Bridge spans the Seine in Paris and The Pogues have sung Le Pont Mirabeau in English in their rough but rousing style. It is a poem by a French poet, Guillaume Apollinaire, who died of his wounds and Spanish Flu after seeing active service in WW1. It is sung in a different style by French artists Léo Ferré and Marc Lavoine. Legend has it that the poem was inspired by the break up in the relationship between Apollinaire and his female partner. Apollinaire had to cross the bridge when he went to see her. The poem/song speaks of the classical themes of the fatality of passing time and the pain of love. Hopefully, both countries will continue to benefit from close co-operation and not just in the realm of music. Arguments for and against the setting up of a national database may also be considered. Greek Language and how it affects us: Jeremy Dinsdale (1 DAY COURSE) We will look at the Greek alphabet first, the individual letters. This will be extended to identifying words that are still used regularly in modern English and explore briefly some aspects of spelling in English that are affected by the transliteration of Greek letters into English. Why is it photograph, not fotograph, for example? We will look at some simple bits of Greek text, eg the opening words of St John s Gospel. We could go on to examine very early Greek myths dealing with creation. The list can go on Photoshop Is it Art?: Peter Higginbottom (1 DAY COURSE) Make your already good photos the vision of what you wanted them to be We will start with the basics and go on to many aspects that will turn your photos into something very special. 23 SPRING 2018 Barnsley & District U3A Page 37 Mixed Media Art :Christine Palmer, Vanda Outram & Janet Roberts (2 DAYS) The Media Art that we will cover involves basic acrylic or water colour painting as a base, but incorporates different materials, such as sand, tissue paper, bubble wrap, tin foil, twigs, sequins, cardboard, fabric, leaves virtually anything which would enhance the picture. You can be as creative as you wish - there are no rules or special techniques involved. We will bring a selection of paints and stuff, but you are welcome to bring anything you like (the Pound Shop is a useful source of material). You need no artistic skills to take this course. Passchendaele: Andrew and Sue Green (1 DAY COURSE) Passchendaele, along with the Somme, has come to symbolise the horrors of World War 1. The day will look at how this small village, which lies on a ridge 5 miles north east of the Flanders city of Ypres, came to encapsulate the grim brutality of the Great War. We'll look at the logistics of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, which has become known as the Battle of Passchendaele, but also discover how the horrors of the Battle of the Mud inspired the arts, produced humour and has added to our own local and personal history. Anyone attending with Passchendaele family links is welcome to bring along any pictures or family stories so we can compile, over the 2 days, a U3A archive of local lads and their families who contributed to the battle in For those who aren't sure if they have family heroes in this or other WW1 battles may also find some useful tips on researching WW1 ancestors. Music can be fun: Max Senior (1 DAY COURSE) Ever wondered how musicians know what to play? Ever wondered how reading music is just as exhilarating as reading a book? Did you know that it is a medical fact that reading music can help towards stimulating the old brain cells thus staving off dementia? Well if you are curious or like a challenge, then here is a chance to learn the rudiments of music. The morning session will be a crash course in learning all about how to read a sheet of music. Then in the afternoon, after a recap of the mornings work, you will be introduced to how a brass instrument works and have a chance to play one. Optional of course! Charles Dickens, his life and writing: Beth Rudkin (1 DAY COURSE) How did the life and loves of Charles Dickens relate to one of our greatest writers? We will look at both life and writing, and perhaps know him a little better by the end of the day. What must you do next? Express your interest ASAP to Beth Rudkin: or rudkinbeth@gmail.com Follow this up with a cheque for 10 (total cost will be 56 for the two days) and send it to: Beth Rudkin, 1 The Lees, Ardsley, Barnsley, S71 5HJ Please make cheques payable to Barnsley and District U3A

24 Page 38 Barnsley & District U3A SPRING 2018 (From recent chats on our Facebook page.) If you are in one of our walking, gardening, nature or birdwatching groups or just enjoy a walk with your dog or by yourself try the following idea about 'being in the now'. I know walking with a group of people is about being able to have a chat and enjoy the company but try to break away from the group for just a few minutes: the same with other groups. Find a quiet space away from other people and position yourself in a way that you have a view of something. Put all things out of your mind apart from what you can see. Focus on the colours you can see and the shapes flowers or trees make. Notice the myriad of colours in trees, water or birds you may be concentrating on. Notice how these things belong to our landscape and how much they enhance our lives. If other thoughts make their way into your mind push them back out. Think only of yourself and what you are looking at. Along with the above take notice of your breathing. Feel every breath you take. Breathe in through your nose to the count of 2 and then out through your mouth to the same count. Increase these times slowly and only as much as you are comfortable with. Try to make sure your breathing slows down as you do this. Be conscious of slowing it down. Finish your being 'in the now' by taking your thoughts to how your body feels. Are your shoulders relaxed? Does your head feel clear? Are your legs ready for carrying on with your walk? You can then join your companions after taking time out just for you. This may need to be practised to keep other thoughts out of your mind but it will be worth persevering with. Enjoy the day. Lynn Maloney An internet search for Yoga with Adriene brings up lots of videos on YouTube about mindfulness and breathing techniques... if you can get over the Texan accent she is totally awesome. I practice yoga with Adriene most days but mindfulness is a massive part of the practice - honouring where you are on any particular day; sending breath to parts of the body that need it most; learning to listen to your body and still the thinking mind. It isn't easy and at first you may think it s a crock but stick with it my friends and over time you will notice a difference. Think head over heart... Heart over pelvis as a stance. While it might not be achievable for a lot of people again its about honouring the thought and taking it away with you throughout the day. Just open up your mind. Laraine Timms

It all went as good as usual, lots of lovely food and glorious desserts, which I m sure is appreciated more than the savoury section. The members of the group went to town this year, apple and blackberry crumble, cupcakes, parkin, cherry trifle, millionaire s shortbread and a raspberry and blackberry mousse, all of which were homemade. A great evening was had by all, good dancing and a lovely buffet. So good we extended the evening by one hour. But this year I would like to give a big Thank You to the Kitchen Gremlins who are the keystone to a good evening. Without them nothing would have run so smoothly. They organised the food which all the members provided for both sessions, the main buffet and 45 minutes later the dessert section plus hot drinks for everyone. But the most important job they did was all the washing up which was mountainous. No cardboard plates for us, we dine in style. I know everyone would help but there is not enough room in the kitchen so Pat Butcher, Sandra Bailey, John and Jenny Pearson, Marie and Ken Ruisling...Thank You... Lynda G xx
