Didn t we have a luverly time at the DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS! I would just like to say a big thank you to the Parish Council and the Village Hall Committee for organising the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in the village. It was nice to see so many people enjoying themselves and to see families celebrating together. For me the highlight was the children's tea party in the village hall. The hall looked splendid with its decorations and the table set out the length of the hall was lovely. I think it was a really nice touch that grandchildren were invited as well. My son was only a small child when we celebrated the Silver Jubilee in the village, but he remembers it well and to be able to celebrate this Jubilee with my little grandson sitting down to tea with all the other children was a touching moment. So job well done and a pat on the back to you all. Carole Durrant Ed. Thank you Carole - and so say all of us! JUBILEE WILD-FLOWER SOWING A big thank you to all the children who took part and to the adults who assisted. The event went well and hopefully we shall soon see results. JUBILEE PICTURE SHOW Drop-in morning in the Village Hall, Saturday 14 July 10:30am to 1pm. Tea, coffee, cakes. Photos taken of the events of the day taken by Miles Fisher (the "official" photographer) and several other villagers will be on show. If you have photos that you would be happy to have included in the show, please contact John Barnett or Karina Joyce before the day. PROPOSED KITE-FLYING? It is suggested we have a kite-flying day on the recreation ground some time early in September. Anyone who is interested, or who has any ideas or is able to help, please get in touch with Anne Smith (783648) or caulky2@hotmail.co.uk. A Third of a Century - GONE but NOT FORGOTTEN! It is rather strange how dates or events have a habit of repeating themselves. 33 years ago in early February 1979 Pamela and I, together with a very noisy 10 month old called Louisa, travelled through some horrendous snow and blizzards to view a house in Great Bradley built by J Jones the local builder. That journey resulted in him building Tinerfe House for us and in August 1979 we moved in and became new residents of Great Bradley. The pendulum of time has continued its relentless swing and again to a day in early February but now Pamela and I (minus the noisy one this time) travelled to Stansted Airport through some of the worst snow and winter conditions we have experienced locally since 1979 and flew out to Portugal. That journey resulting in the final details and purchase of our new home and subsequent relocation to Balaia on The Algarve. Again by a strange coincidence we arrived in Great Bradley August 1979 and now August 2012 will see us leave. One individual who viewed Tinerfe House made the comment that 33 years was an exceptionally long period to stay in one place and in their opinion particularly strange as the village did not seem to have much going for it in terms of things to do or indeed any major attractions. This comment initially annoyed me but also gave me food for thought as to why we had stayed in Great Bradley so long. After all during that 33 years I had worked for Dutch, British, US, Israeli and Canadian companies, most involving a great deal of travel and almost unlimited opportunities to relocate. Part of the reason may have been down to the following somewhat logical business reasons: the village was nicely spaced between London, Cambridge and Colchester, my main UK places of business. Good access to London by road (in the early days I thought the M11 was built for me as it was rare to see another car prior to the Harlow junction!) 3

The train service via Dullingham/Cambridge to London was just the ticket for those days when one would be celebrating or entertaining and possibly unfit and certainly unwise to drive. Easy access to Stansted and via the links at Amsterdam Schipol to almost any international destination. Easy to reach Norwich, home of parents, family and the Canaries, my soccer team. However it didn t require considerable thought to realise that the main reasons we stayed were of a different nature: The fabulous location of Bradley in the Stour Valley with undulating countryside, multiple woods and caredfor agricultural land. The peace and quietness and total absence of snarling traffic and bustling hordes gave unlimited opportunity to relax and unwind and recharge ready to face whatever life served up. The vast range of personalities, nature and professions of the residents in the village gave rise to many interesting and intriguing discussions, and new relationships being developed. Pamela and I may not always agree but we do share the same view that you only get from life what you are prepared to give to life. Therefore individually and together we have supported local schools in via PTAs and as Governors, the Church and PCC, the Parish Council and various committees for the village fete, the Village Hall and other charitable activities. However we were never alone in this commitment and in our view it s this simple fact that makes living here in Bradley Great. In fairness it could appear that there is a lack of readily available attractions in the village. What is not readily apparent is the fact that the residents with their vast range of capabilities and personalities pooled their resources and made events and activities happen that would amaze many and be remembered by all involved as joyous achievements. As Pam and I start the process of clearing Tinerfe House we are constantly reminded by photographs and text of very special moments during the last 33 years and although too many to list them all the following few were classics. St Mary s Church is a fantastic old church and unlike many throughout the land still operational which is thanks in no small way to the major financial contribution from the Village fete. I first became involved (somewhat reluctantly if honest) with the Fete in 1980 and with one exception every year since. Yet each year I am still amazed at the unbelievable schemes thought up to keep the cash coming in. Many of these ideas would even blow the minds of the illustrious Dragons Den. On several occasions we held very successful Swimwear and Lingerie sales at the fete and raised many 00s in the process. On one occasion a helper on the lingerie stall was heard to shout what about the Teddies. Passing by, the late Stephen Ryder was heard to say.. thought we had a separate teddy bear stall. It was quickly explained to him that this was not the sort of teddy that you took to bed to cuddle. To which the reply came back with a subtle wink, Well I suppose that could depend on who was wearing it. On another occasion Charles Ryder and I had arranged to meet at Peterborough to expedite delivery of the Lingerie and Swimwear. A discreet location for this handover seemed to be the car park of a large hotel on the AI trunk road near Peterborough and on the day Charles arrived from the north and I, together with a trusted helper, arrived from the south. The transfer of goods was going well until two of Cambridgeshire s finest boys in blue pulled into the car park. After several minutes watching what probably appeared a somewhat clandestine activity one of the officers strolled over to the vehicle being loaded and asked well what have we got here then to which the late Brian Taylor a staunch fete supporter promptly replied knickers. It took some instantaneous explanation and a grovelling apology to convince the police that all was above board and that Brian was certainly not being disrespectful. It was a close shave if ever there was one! Not many villages the size of Great Bradley could boast the capability to have pleasure flights taking off from their fete in a genuine military aircraft piloted by a resident of the village. Well Bradley did it and many of you should remember Captain Ross Skingley and his trusty Auster, especially the take off and landing on the cornfield. Even the horrendous downpour year when the BBQ sausages floated across the lawn into the garden pond didn t dampen enthusiasm although some of the art lovers looked more than a little concerned prior to being rescued from the flooded church porch! But it is not just the fete that receives glowing compliments from visitors. Today we enjoy a Village Hall that is amongst the best in the county. But it is only because of the commitment of successive committees and indeed the endeavours of residents, many of who not only donated time but also financial aid. It is hard to look at the Hall today and forget that prior to complete renovation one had to take great care when painting the old doors, not to stroke the paint on too hard in case the rotten wood gave way. The old hall withstood arson attacks and decay but then with that same spirit and commitment it not only won the lottery but thanks to some really talented fund raising by a few individuals it was renovated and indeed rejuvenated. However events have a habit of repeating themselves and the recent disaster of burst pipes almost finished it off. So well done to the present committee and others whose dedication have ensured it s back in good health. Another gold medal for Bradley in this modern era is its Web Site. It is a super village link and thanks to web master Mike we will be able to view Great Bradley regularly whilst enjoying the sun and local produce of the Algarve(best of both worlds maybe!). 4

This village has seen the awesome sight of Murray and his authentic Battle Tank rumble down and indeed totally block the B1061, much to the amusement and amazement of bystanders. It has seen Vicars & Tarts and Tramps invade the Village and Conga Dancing the size and length of which may never be surpassed. Village BBQs, Sports Days, and of course Quizzes under Master Les. Thanks to an energetic Parish Council and Parish Clerk it now has a superb recreation ground for many a generation both young and old to enjoy. Bradley has its own lottery and of course its very own Bugle. So perhaps that viewer of Tinerfe House got the totally wrong impression of Great Bradley! WE certainly think so. Pam and I are naturally very excited by our new home and new life ahead but equally sad at leaving Tinerfe House and Great Bradley where we have had such a super and memorable 33 years. So we could not leave without expressing our thanks to past and present residents, those who are now close friends, those with whom we have served on various village committees and the great number whose company we have simply enjoyed. We both wish all in Great Bradley success and happiness in the future and hope that your commitment and innovation will continue to make Bradley a really Great place to live. We hope the new residents of Tinerfe House, Annette & Richard, will find the same happiness & friendships that we have had the good fortune to enjoy. Pamela, Richard and Spottie (Great Bradley ) Ed. Thank you for sharing these super memories Bon Voyage from all us! 1st t Burrough Green Brownies The Brownies, for girls aged seven to ten, meet weekly in Brinkley during the school term.. Our Brownies have recently enjoyed the Linton District campfire. An event where all the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides in the district get together and sing campfire songs and eat hotdogs! Held at the Jarman Centre in Newmarket, it s a relatively recent innovation which we hope will carry on providing the entertainment and excitement that all our Brownies love. If anyone would like more information, or would like to register a girl who is not yet 7 please contact: Margaret Whalley Les & Anne s Nature Notes Yet Another New Bird! Well, May turned out to be a fantastic month because of one bird. A Short Eared Owl was present for about a week along the river between Hall Road and Water Lane. So what? I here you say. Well this bird is usually only a winter visitor to this part of the country and most Short Eared Owls have headed home across the North Sea by late March and early April. One or two of them seem to linger, mainly in the coastal areas. It is a bird of rough heathland and does breed in this country but usually in the North of England and Scotland. For some reason 2011 was a very good year for Short Eared Owls and larger than normal numbers crossed the channel with up to 50 seen coming in off the sea at Titchwell on the N. Norfolk coast in one day. Anne and I were lucky to watch 10 at Burwell Fen in November and 6 over at Stradishall. But Great Bradley is far from an ideal habitat for such a bird and that is why we were so excited to find it here. It stayed for about a week and I was lucky on one occasion to get quite close and take some great photos, I hope you agree! This now takes our Village bird list up to 88. As for our Barn Owls, well we hope to have news of them in time for the Fete and next month's Bugle. Yet another good record is that of the Grey Wagtails, most years we have seen a pair on the river but never any young. Well we're glad to say that for the first time this year we have seen two young birds 5

being fed by the adults. The Kingfishers had a terrible time in April with their first nest site being flooded out, but I'm glad to report they have another hole now and are very active so young may be on the way soon. I hope to have a display of photos in the Church again this year for the Fete and my new 2013 Suffolk Wildlife calendar will be on sale, limited supply so get one [or two!] while you can. As always happy spotting! Les and Anne GREAT BRADLEY WEA WEA have an interesting course with a local connection commencing on Wednesday 19 September in the Village Hall. We will be exploring the impact of Wartime USAAF in East Anglia, the combat history, cultural impact and legacy of the American presence during WW2. I have spoken to local people who have personal memories so we hope that village residents will come along to both relive their memories and share them with the group, as well as listening to what our tutor Ian McLachlan has to tell us. We are a small and friendly group who would welcome you. The cost for the eight two hour sessions with tea/coffee is 46. The first week is free as a taster. If you require more information please contact me, Peter Smith on We look forward to seeing you. PARISH COUNCIL - Don t Lose Your Gear! Burglaries from outbuildings continue to be a threat in our area, and have occurred recently in East Green and in Cowlinge. Please make sure your garage, barn or shed is secure with a good quality lock and preferably other deterrents such as security lighting and/or an alarm. These measures cost only a few pounds, and may be enough to persuade the burglar not to choose your shed to break into. Also please keep your eyes open for suspicious behaviour and call the police if you see anything suspicious, even if you are not sure. Suffolk SAFEKey Suffolk Police has now launched a scheme that can reunite members of the public with their lost or stolen keys, whilst supporting Suffolk s local charities. Suffolk SAFEKey is an official service offered by Suffolk Constabulary, in partnership with Keycare Ltd, which is open to both residents and business owners and takes the stress out of losing valuable keys. This is additional service to Suffolk SAFEKey s existing keyholder database provision and is no extra cost to current subscribers of the old scheme. People can join Suffolk SAFEKey by visiting or calling Application forms will also be available at local police stations. How key fob recovery works The new key fob recovery service means that members are issued with key fobs, featuring the force crest and a unique identifying number. People who find lost keys with the Suffolk SAFEKey fob are encouraged, through a 10 finders fee, to hand the keys to the police or send them to a secure postal address. Allowing for the keys to be returned to their rightful owner. Whilst the service is called Suffolk SAFEKey, members of the scheme will be covered for lost keys anywhere in the UK and EU. Chief Constable Simon Ash said We have thousands of keys handed in at police stations across Suffolk that, despite our best efforts, can t be reunited with their rightful owner. From the equivalent of just 1 a month [ 12 per annum for residential] this additional service through Suffolk SAFEKey will help increase the likelihood of us getting your keys back to you. Suffolk SAFEKey has been established for four years primarily as a keyholder database. Although the Keyfob recovery is an additional service, there is no increase in cost to subscribers of the service. Supporting local charity Whilst there is a charge for joining this service, starting from 1 a month [ 12 per annum for residential], any money generated above that required to operate Suffolk SAFEKey will support the Constabulary s charitable arm, the Safer Suffolk Foundation. The Constabulary s charity aims to support projects and organisations that look to address policing, community safety and quality of life issues for those people living and working in Suffolk. Schemes like Suffolk SAFEKey are vital to funding the work of the Safer Suffolk Foundation. Since its launch in 2008, the Constabulary s charity has raised a staggering 109,063 which has supported local schemes and projects, said Mr Ash. 6

Stephen Singleton, Chief Executive Officer for the Suffolk Foundation said: As the Suffolk Foundation helps administer the Constabulary s charity, assisting with identifying those projects within Suffolk that would benefit from funding, we see firsthand the impact the money from the Constabulary has on Suffolk s local communities. The opportunity to increase this funding through the Suffolk SAFEKey service is something we support. Can you help? Suffolk SAFEKey can be a valuable service to residents, business owners, charities and other community groups. If you know of anyone who could benefit from this service, and would like to promote Suffolk SAFEKey, please contact your Community Watch Liaison Officer, Diane Townsend on or diane.townsend@suffolk.pnn.police.uk if you would like some leaflets.
