THE OUTER LOOP The Triangle Expressway (I-5) Southeast Extension project began in 1997 and has over 30 miles of completed freeway in a radius around Raleigh. The next phase of the loop will extend from Highway 55 in Apex to I- near Greenfield North. There are currently five different routes being considered by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. Two of the routes being considered would have the Triangle Expressway intersecting with I- within one mile to the south of Greenfield North. The remaining proposed routes would bring an interchange to Garner located no further than five miles from Greenfield North.
