In true Wisconsin style, the state s maritime capital has been celebrating the momentous accident each year for the better part of a decade with a wacky bash hailed as one of the nation s top five funkiest festivals by Reader s Digest. Take part in some far-out competitions for every age group and life form, from the costume and alien pet contests to the Ms. Space Debris Pageant. Why a carp? This upstream swimmer is seen as a sign of good fortune in many cultures, particularly relevant for a fishing-industry town. After Lucky s minute-long descent accompanied by a music and pyrotechnics show festival-goers line up to place a kiss for good luck on his frozen fi sh lips. If you re not into that, no worries.
