Set in a beautiful Georgian building lined with flower boxes spilling color around communal picnic tables, the place is filled with musty paintings and old-timers, dogs wearing Union Jack vests, and a long line of tempting tap handles. Today, timeworn taverns such as the Anglesea Arms are national treasures that still make a cheery refuge from the daily grind or a brief escape for a tired traveler.

6 Page 6 of 23 SUNDAY - AUGUST 7 11:30 AM 1 hr Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace Best overall view of the palace and parades, stake out high ground on the circular Victoria Memorial (come before 11 am to get a place) Tube: Victoria St, St. James's Park or Green Park Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace encompasses colourful spectacle and British pageantry. The ceremony lasts about 45 minutes and usually takes place daily at 11:30 from April until the end of July and on alternate days for the rest of the year, weather permitting. The privilege of guarding the Sovereign traditionally belongs to the Household Troops, better known as the Guards, who have carried out this duty since For operational and other reasons, this privilege is periodically extended to other regiments of the British Army. The Guards consist of five infantry regiments - the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards - and two regiments of the Household Cavalry the Life Guards and Blues and Royals. Most of the Guards will have seen action overseas. During the Changing the Guard ceremony, also known as Guard Mounting, one regiment takes over from another. The Queen s Guard consists of the St James s Palace and Buckingham Palace detachments. The New Guard, who during the course of the ceremony become The Queen s Guard, march to Buckingham Palace from Wellington Barracks. 1:00 PM 1 hr Lunch 2:15 PM 4 hr Tour of Buckingham Palace, State Rooms, the Royal Mews and the Queen's Gallery Your ticket also includes entry to Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style from The Queen's Wardrobe. This special exhibition at the Summer Opening of the Palace in 2016, displays some of Her Majesty's outfits from childhood to the present day including her stunning Coronation and wedding dresses. The State Rooms

7 Page 7 of 23 During the summer when the Palace is not being used in its official capacity, visitors can take in the splendour of the nineteen magnificent State Rooms. The State Rooms provide the setting for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining. Each room is furnished with many of the treasures from The Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto; sculpture by Canova; and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world. You will end your tour with a walk along the south side of the garden, with splendid views of the west front of the Palace and the famous lake. The term State Rooms is applied to those rooms that were designed and built as the public rooms of the Palace, in which monarchs receive, reward and entertain their subjects and visiting dignitaries. Today the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are used extensively by The Queen and members of the Royal Family to receive and entertain their guests on State, ceremonial and official occasions. The Palace's nineteen State Rooms predominantly reflect the taste George IV (r ), who commissioned the architect John Nash to transform what had previously been known as Buckingham House into a grand palace. Many of the pieces of furniture, sparkling chandeliers, candelabra and other works of art in these rooms were bought or made for Carlton House, George IV's London home when he was Prince of Wales. Today the State Rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Canaletto, sculpture by Canova, exquisite pieces of Sèvres porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world. Many of the other State Rooms also have particular uses today. It is in the Throne Room, for example, that The Queen, on very special occasions like Jubilees, receives loyal addresses. On 29 April 2011 this room was the setting for the formal photographs following the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In the Music Room, guests are presented to The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and the visiting Head of State on the occasion of a State visit. The White Drawing Room, perhaps the grandest of all the State Rooms, serves as a royal reception room for The Queen and members of the Royal Family to gather before official occasions. The Queen's Gallery

8 Page 8 of 23 The Queen s Gallery was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in May It hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection. Your ticket allows access to all the exhibitions currently on display during your visit. On show at present is Scottish Artists : From Caledonia to the Continent which brings together paintings, drawings and miniatures collected by monarchs from George III to Queen Victoria, and Maria Merian's Butterflies which presents the German artist's studies into insect metamorphosis with meticulous and brightly coloured hand painted pieces. The Royal Mews Situated alongside Buckingham Palace is the Royal Mews, one of the finest working stables in existence and responsible for all road travel arrangements for The Queen and members of the Royal Family. Throughout your visit, you will see a number of historic coaches and carriages, including The Diamond Jubilee State Coach, used for the first time in 2014, and The Gold State Coach, which has been used at every coronation since that of George IV in With your ticket, you can visit the State Rooms, The Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace on the same day. This time is for your entry into The Queen's Gallery which operates a timed-admission system, with entry every 15 minutes throughout the day. You will then be allocated an admission time for the State Rooms, which will be 2½ hours after you begin your visit at The Queen's Gallery. The last ticket time you can select is 14:45 in August and 13:45 in September. We recommend you begin your Royal Day Out at The Queen's Gallery and The Royal Mews, concluding your visit at the State Rooms. Visit Duration Your Royal Day Out will last approximately 4 to 4½ hours. All tours are self-guided so the duration of your visit is subject to personal preference You are advised to wear comfortable shoes, as the visitor route includes a half-mile walk through the left hand side of the garden to the exit of Buckingham Palace. Alternative arrangements can be made for visitors with disabilities on request. The location of each site entrance are indicated on the map of the Palace below: For safety and security reasons on arrival, you and your belongings will be subject to airport-style security checks. Please try to bring as little as possible with you as it will help you to get through security screening. Eating and Drinking

19 Page 19 of 23 Kid Friendly Activities In Paris, the biggies with parents are a hit with kids, too. Bring Notre-Dame, Paris famous Gothic cathedral, to life by replaying Quasimodo s stunt and climbing the tower. From this perch, kids stand nose-tonose with the gargoyles. Young sailors delight in the one-hour Seine River cruises on huge glass-domed boats, best in the evening when the City of Light is lit. Stroll the Champs-Elysées with its Disney Store, fast-food restaurants, and fancy car dealerships. Paris offers a variety of perfect-for-kids parks and museum complexes. Luxembourg Garden provides plenty of outdoor fun from pedal go-carts and puppet shows to a wading pool, rental toy sailboats, and big-toys play area with imaginative slides, swings, and jungle gyms. The Jardin des Plantes ( Garden of Plants ) is short on grass but makes up for it with a small zoo and a great dinosaur exhibit at the paleontology museum. Street acrobats, in-line skaters, and skateboarders make Trocadéro square a happening scene for teens, especially in the evening. From here, the view of the Eiffel Tower lit up white against the night sky is stunning. A ride to the top of the tower is a thrill, day or night (book ahead online to avoid the line). Try to be there the first five minutes of any hour after dark to see it twinkle. Aquaboulevard is Paris best pool/water slide/miniature golf complex. It s easy to reach and a timely escape from the museum scene. Indoor and outdoor pools with high-flying slides, waves, geysers, and whirlpool tubs draw kids of all ages. Versailles huge complex of palaces, gardens, fountains, and forest is a great Parisian family getaway (an easy 30-minute train ride from the city).
