4 History Save Cedar Lake Park (SCLP) was a citizens group formed in 1989 with the vision of establishing a rustic nature park on the north and northeast shores of Cedar Lake and along the railroad right-of-way from Cedar Lake to Highway 100. Its official name was Cedar Lake Park Preservation and Development Association, Inc. The goals of SCLP were to ensure that the land for sale by Burlington Northern was protected from development other than as parkland, to raise at least one-third of the 1.7 million dollar purchase price, preserve the land for a nature park by negotiating with an intermediary agency to acquire the land and hold it until the purchase can be funded through public and private sources; develop a foot and bike trail corridor that connects the Chain of Lakes and the Mississippi Riverfront Park, and extend the trail corridor west. In 1989 community members living near Cedar Lake learned that Burlington Railroad intended to sell the land bordering the north shore of Cedar Lake, which had once been used as a railroad switching yard. In March 1989 a neighborhood meeting was held to discuss preserving the land. This meeting led to the formation of SCLP in April By 1991, SCLP had more than 500 members. Laurie Lundy was the coordinator of the group. SCLP approached the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) with their vision for preservation of the land. The MPRB commissioned Wirth Design to develop a design study of using the land as a nature park. In November 1989 the Metropolitan Council s Open Space Commission approved the design study and added Cedar Lake to its Chain of Lakes Regional Park Plan. SCLP collaborated with a number of existing entities in order to raise funds and gain support, including the Minneapolis Chapter of Audubon and the James F. Bell Foundation. In 1991 the Minnesota State Legislature approved the additional funding needed to purchase the 48 acres of land in Minneapolis and St. Louis Park. The land was purchased by the MPRB on November 25, 1992 for $1.7 million dollars. After the acquisition of the land, the Cedar Lake Park Association took the place of Save Cedar Lake Park. The Cedar Lake Park Association was active in developing the urban park and trail on the purchased land. On September 9, 1995 Cedar Lake Trail was dedicated. In 2000 the group renamed itself the Cedar Lake Park Association (CLPA) and refocused their efforts to further extending the Cedar Lake Regional Trail through Downtown Minneapolis to the Mississippi River. During the 2000s and 2010s the group remained an active force for promoting the development of trails and parkland in the Cedar Lake area. Description of Collection - Page 4 -

5 The collection consists of 17 boxes (1 oversized) containing various internal documents, reports, media materials and organizational miscellany concerning the Cedar Lake Park Association (and its forerunner, Save Cedar Lake Park). Materials are largely from the 1990s and early to mid-2000s. 1 concerns the history of Cedar Lake itself and some of the planning documents surrounding the group's founding and its original goals and objectives. 2 contains financial reports from the organization and information on the fundraising efforts it led. 3 contains administrative documents such as governing documents, meeting minutes and agendas and correspondence with officials and other organizations. 4 contains materials such as presentations, awards and documents from other partner organizations. 5 concerns Cedar Lake Park specifically and contains materials surrounding the fundraising, planning and actual purchase of the land for the park. es 6 and 7 contain details on the master plan for the park and further developments and enhancements undertaken after the park's original creation. es 8 and 9 contain reports and planning documents related to trail development in and around the Cedar Lake area (including the Cedar Lake Trail itself). es 10 and 11 contain educational and marketing materials related to the organization's efforts. es 12, 13 and 14 contain clippings, news releases, public notices, newsletters and other publications surrounding the group's activities. 15 contains media materials such as photos, maps and drawings (both printed and digitally stored on diskettes, CD-ROMs, photo negatives). 16 also contains media in the form of audio recordings and video tape recordings of events related to the group's work. 17 contains oversized materials which are chiefly maps and mounted photographs/drawings.
