1 More Ways to Shop Used First Garage Sales Look in the paper or check out a sale when you drive by a sign. Garage sales typically sell items for less money than consignment or thrift stores. Having a garage sale yourself is a great way to make money and even get the kids to clean up their room by going through their clothes and toys. Remember that someone else may treasure your unwanted items. efore having a sale, you may want to go to a few garage sales to see the prices put on the items. A general rule of thumb would be 25 30% of the new price, unless it is brand new. Estate Sales Estate sales often sell everything from clothing to the kitchen sink. You may find tools, kitchen equipment, furniture, linens, dishes and a variety of other items. Estate sales are a good place to find quality items, not just antiques, at fair prices. Sometimes you must even take numbers, because they only let a few people in at a time. It is not uncommon to have specials on the last day of the sale. Don t be afraid to make an offer! Consignment Shops Consignment shops accept items from the public and sell them for you. he store will take a commission to sell your item(s). While the commissions vary, you can expect to get about 50% of their asking price. hey price the item(s) at 30 70% of the original price. After a few weeks the item(s) may be marked down. Some stores will negotiate a price with you and may not discount your merchandise. he stores are clean and neat; the merchandise is organized like a department store. Many specialty consignment stores are opening in the metropolitan area. Some specialize in children s clothing and furniture, women s clothing and accessories, sporting goods, exercise equipment, music, and furniture. Check out the many used product stores in our guide. hrift Stores hrift stores are a great place to get really good bargains; however, you have to work a little. In general, they are not as well organized as consignment stores and you have to go through a lot of items to get what you can use. It is a good idea to be flexible when shopping at a thrift store, as they may not have what you came in for, but something else you could use for a small price! Once you get a great outfit or piece of furniture you will be hooked. Plan to spend a little time looking for the goodies. hese are the best stores to get good-quality, cheap children s items. he prices are so low it pays to buy pieces for your child to grow into. Used Product Stores Many stores sell used items. You can buy anything from tools and building materials to exercise equipment and fine china. Items are generally priced at 50%, or less, of retail. Check phone books for the item you want with a used heading, for example, Furniture Used.

3 Appliances Major appliances are large expenditures and may sometimes not be in our budgets. A good way to stretch our dollars farther is to purchase an appliance that is used or reconditioned. Many times families move to new homes and either bring their own appliances with them or purchase new ones to fit their new décor. he appliance left by the previous owner could become waste unless it is sold or dismantled for recycling. Other ways to find used appliances is to look in want ads and at garage or estate sales. It takes only a little time to shop used first and may save you hundreds of dollars! he following stores offer major appliances at prices much less than new. A.C. Even though we are recycling more and more materials, we are still sending more waste per person to our processing facility and landfills. Presently, Anoka County processes approximately 85% of its waste at the Elk River Resource Recovery Facility where waste is made into fuel that is burned to generate electricity. Our projections indicate that in the future we will not be able to process all of our waste and will be sending more and more waste to landfills (see the chart below). Is this really what we want to do with our natural resources? Should we throw valuable materials in the garbage without any thought of our grandchildren or their children? We do not believe that most of you wish to waste our resources when other options are available. o help you reduce the amount of garbage you produce, consider the following: ry to recycle more materials. Are you recycling cardboard, scrap metal, mixed mail and magazines? Look for and purchase products that are made from recyclables. Do you look for the recycling symbol or text that says Made from recycled material? ry to reduce the amount of material you can t recycle. Reuse, donate and/or sell unwanted items instead of throwing them away. If you would like to join us in these efforts to reduce waste and conserve our natural resources, please call us at for more ideas. We are here to help. 5

Donating used clothing helps others in need and is an effective way to reduce the volume of textiles in the waste stream. extiles represent over two percent of the waste stream. When clothing is donated, generally the best is pulled out to be sold or given away. he remaining clothing is baled and sold to a broker who sorts it into four groups: 1) warm-weather clothing and shoes for underdeveloped countries; 2) cotton materials which are recycled into rags; 3) textiles ground into padding; and 4) wool and silk for sale to textile manufacturers. he result is that 100% of the textiles donated are reused.
