1 Cincinnati Division 7 Mid Central Region NMRA THE OIL CAN Volume III Issue 2 FEBRUARY 2009 The Oil Can is a publication of Division 7, MCR, NMRA, Inc. Opinions expressed herein are the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Cincinnati Division 7, the MCR, the NMRA, its officers, or its members. Space permitting, The Oil Can welcomes news items, articles and letters on Model Railroading and related topics. Deadline for submissions is generally the fifteenth of the month preceding the next meeting. HEADLIGHTS Merlyn Jarman, Superintendent Electronic Edition Ready for Spring Spring is right around the corner as our annual Spring Flea Market on March 14 th, 2009 fast approaches. Chairperson, George Roos has planned another great flea market event. Help make it a successful event by signing up and helping with show set up, tear down, and many other functions including staffing our Div. Membership booth (see Brad Bove). Contact Roy Hord for tables to sell your model railroad treasures. Your vote counts! I hope you took the time to return your Mid Central Region (MCR) ballot included in the MCR Kingpin to vote for Officers for the Region. As our own NMRA President, Mike Brestel pointed out; these elections can be won or lost by just a few votes. Speaking of which, Mike has announced he will run for another term as N.M.R.A. President. I hope you will support his efforts along with V.P. Allen Pollock in continuing to improve the vitality and value of the N.M.R.A. A tip of the hat to our Car Projects Chairman You have all seen the wonderful car projects that Div. 7 has rolled out over the past few years. Jim MacKnight s hard work as Chairperson of the Car Project Committee includes researching and bringing these projects to fruition. Behind the scenes, Jim is busy receiving the cars from the manufacturer, checking for quality and completeness. Then, Jim receives the orders by mail or , packs and ships the cars, handles the money, manages the inventory, and pushes product releases to the model railroad publications. Kind of like a full time job! Along the way, Jim has been assisted by Jim Hodde, Paul Maciulewicz, Roy Hord and many others over the years. Thanks, Jim for your dedication and keep those car projects coming! Don t miss the bus John Burchnall and I have been at work (well mostly, John) on putting together another Div. 7 motor coach tour to see some premier model railroad layouts. This year s Dayton Flyer will feature some REALLY nice layouts in the greater Dayton, Oh. area and is planned for May 9 th, See further details on the sign-up form, it s a nice day out with your model railroad buddies with lunch included. Ride in style and enjoy a great day of friendship and model railroading. The schedule has changed Remember, there will be NO regular March Division meeting-see us at the Spring Flea Market on Mar. 14 th. That also affects the Monthly Model/Photo Contest schedule. The updated schedules are printed here in the Oil Can and on the Division 7 website. Make sure you have the latest info to avoid disappointment when you are the sole Div. 7 Member in a dark room on the wrong date. See you in February! Merlyn 1

2 The Electronic Oil Can - February, Page 2 SECOND SECTION Randy Kerka, Asst. Superintendent 2009 is off and running! On January 11 th, Division 7 started the new year s slate of activities with a new type of interactive clinic. Harmony Lodge was the scene of our first Layout Design Clinic, a concept which sprang from the fertile mind of John Burchnall. John and his crew, Roy Hord and Dave Keith, held our interest and yes I believe everyone took away a few new ideas. The initial readout on the festivities was very positive. I know John would appreciate your comments. The honesty of the raffle was again proven when a few new faces made off with the good stuff. After the meeting we visited the Cincinnati Model Railway Club s superb O-Scale layout in Harmony Lodge s lower level and then Frank Feiler s logging layout located downtown. If you missed Frank s place you missed a very fine piece of modeling and a truly unique home with a phenomenal view of Cincinnati. February 8 th : Next month we will meet at the Anderson Senior Center on Beechmont Avenue. Our clinician will be Bill Edwards bringing his own brand of modeling chaos with his new clinic entitled Talent-Less Backdrop Painting. Don t miss this one as it is sure to be a hoot! Layout visits will be to Bruce McClure s No Rhyme Nor Reason HO layout and Matt Snell s Conrail New Jersey Division. March 7 th : It s the Annual Spring Flea Market at Lakota West High School. There will be no regular meeting this month so that we may apply maximum effort to assure a successful Flea Market. April 19 th : Our meeting will be at the Wingate Hotel and Meridian Conference Center in West Chester. The program will be a photo clinic titled Pictures on the Pennsy presented by Mssrs. Ed Swain, Rick Bailey and Curt Larue. Layout visits are scheduled to The Eastern Loggers and to Randy Kerka s West Chester & Southern RR April 30th to May 3rd: MCR Regional Convention - 21 st Century Limited - Columbus, Oh May 9th: 2009 Division 7 Dayton Flyer Bus Trip. (Tip: Seating is limited so sign up NOW!!!) June 14 th : We will meet at the Faith United Methodist Church in West Chester. We have tentatively scheduled MMR Ron Gough to return for Part Two of his Scratch-building with Wood clinic. Layout visits will be to two layouts we have not seen for quite some time. Jim Bonnett s Canadian Pacific's Kettle Valley and Don Leedy s Scofield Western. See you on February 8th at the Anderson Senior Center! Randy 2

3 The Electronic Oil Can - February, Page 3 Fiction and Fact from Don s Almanac In Memoriam Scott Firth NOTE: The program schedule as shown in the January Oil Can has been changed. Swoops is Coming Division 7 will sponsor the South West Ohio OperationS weekend, April 17-19, This will be an op til you drop weekend of four sessions at layouts in the Cincinnati, Dayton and Springfield areas. Eleven layouts have signed up for the event. We will also have several open house layout visits available on Saturday evening. This is the first OpSIG-type event in Southwest Ohio. These events have become very popular around the US, drawing up to 300 operations enthusiasts for a weekend. We are starting small in SW Ohio and expect to have 30 visitors over the weekend. This means a limited number of reservations are available. Division 7 members and others from SW Ohio are invited to participate. By the time you read this, registration should be open on the SWOOPS web site at: If you don t wish to do the entire weekend, you can also help out If you ve been operating at one of the layouts involved, contact the owner to see if he can use a few extra hands. We also will try to have an extra board pool to cover no-shows. For more information, Rick Stern at: rstern1@cinci.rr.com, or call him at All participants must make individual arrangements for transportation to the various sites. Division 7 and the SWOOPS committee are not liable for any vehicular damage, personal injury, traffic violation or other mishap that might occur during this event. Each driver must know and obey all applicable traffic laws and be especially careful in residential neighborhoods as children, walkers, cyclists, strollers and other pedestrians may be present. The organizers will make every effort to provide accurate maps and to allow sufficient time between locations. Layout owners reserve the right to begin an operating session at the announced time even if some participants have not yet arrived. Further, layout owners reserve the right to end (or extend) the session at the announced time as needed by local conditions. 3

11 The Electronic Oil Can - February, Page 7 Knapp s Notes Scott Firth Merlyn called this morning [Wednesday, January 21, 2009] to tell me that Scott Firth had finished his earthly pilgrimage. I was fortunate enough to visit with Scott and Mary Ann earlier this month, and despite Scott s illness, we had a delightful visit. Scott never lost his joy of living and his delightful sense of humor. I got to know Scott as we both spent time with Russ Wenderfer, another division member. Russ was waging his own battle with cancer. Scott was a frequent visitor at the Wenderfer household and often took Russ to model railroad activities. I sat with Scott at Russ s funeral and worked with Scott, and Gordy Morgan, as we assisted Russ s widow with his large train collection. Scott worked tirelessly for the hobby and the NMRA. His contributions to Division 7 are almost too numerous to list here. I think my favorite memory of Scott is him being at the front door of each meeting venue saying, You got a dollar, here give it to me. That was Scott s way of selling tickets to our Highly Honest, No Springs, Monthly Raffle. Scott was also a charter member of WMPA, the Western Modelers Protective Association. Each one of us will have their own special memory of Scott, but I bet it will include his joy of life and his delightful sense of humor. We will all miss Scott, but we are all richer for having known him. My deepest sympathies to Mary Ann, and the Firth family, as they have lost a wonderful husband, father, and friend. I also offer prayers of thanksgiving for having had Scott as a friend. I also am saddened to report the passing of another friend, Bob Mense. Bob, along with his buddy Jack Fischer, were a long-time members of Division 7. I can t think of a division meeting, or convention without those two gentlemen. Bob, like Scott, will be missed by all of us. I keep coming back to my theme of model railroading is about friendships. Happy Modeling UÜâvx Lincoln Bi-Centennial February 12 th marks the 200 th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln s birth. Among the things he is remembered for, the least noted is his role in the growth of railroading in the U.S. As a young practicing attorney, he read of the economic growth the railroads brought and although he had never ridden on or even seen a steam train, he became the leading proponent for bringing railroads to Illinois. When the railroads finally did reach Illinois, he represented several in acquiring rights of way and was soon well known as the leading legal expert on rail transportation. When the Rock Island RR was sued for their bridge across the Mississippi River causing a navigation hazard, Lincoln not only defended the railroad but also won the case in a landmark decision that brought him national prominence. As a wartime president, he was quick to recognize the military advantage of railroads in supplying an army in the field. His U.S. Military Railroad Act gave the Union a tremendous advantage over the South in moving troops and supplies. He was the major factor in starting construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. In 1863, the Car Department of the U.S. Military RR built an elaborate coach to serve as his private car. On April 21 st, 1965 it served to carry the President s remains on his last train ride to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois. Thus railroads continued to play a major part in his life.
