1 Lightning Slinger VOL 33 NO. 2 MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE TURKEY CREEK DIVISION OF THE MID-CONTINENT REGION, NMRA For all gauges and all ages Turkey Creek Division Meeting February 26, 2019 at 7:00 pm Lakeview Village Eastside Terrace, 9100 Park Street Lenexa February 2019 Clinic on the Delicate Stomach of the Iron Horse: Water Softening, Purification, and Engineering Practice on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, By: Gerard Fitzgerald. 2 From THE SUPER S DESK Hello to all Turkey Creek Division members. Fellow Model Railroaders. The January meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather. I discussed the weather issue with Division officers and the speaker, and we decided to cancel and send out a blast . I was glad I cancelled, because at 5:30 PM when I would have left Lawrence for Lenexa, the conditions were very icy. I apologize to anyone who made the effort to get to Lakeview Village and found that the meeting was cancelled. In general, I feel that safety is our priority. If you are concerned that weather conditions are going to impede your travels, please stay home, and joins us at the next meeting. I have asked last month s speaker, Kent Hurley, if he would be interested in rescheduling his clinic. More on this later. The Turkey Creek Train Show and Swap Meet is set for July 27, We are in the process of securing the location. Our most urgent need is for a show coordinator to oversee the various aspects of the show. This is not a standalone job. Larry Diehl and I will assist the coordinator and some of the ground work has begun. We also need volunteers for clinic, layout tour, door prize, registration and other coordinators. This month, I am continuing working on Achievement Program (AP) certificates. I just turned in the paperwork for rolling stock. With my help at the National Convention, my work on the data sheet (mentioned last month) and my serving as Superintendent, the volunteer certificate is well under way. I m currently working on a scenery bare spot and a backdrop that should get me the scenery certificate. I know that being a Master Model Railroader (MMR) is not the goal of most NMRA members, but I like the sense of accomplishment the certificates bring. The February issue of NMRA Magazine had biographies on MMRs #617 and #621. In an organization with thousands of members, these low numbers surprised me. I don t know if I ll get my MMR, but I plan to continue working on AP certificates. The February meeting of Turkey Creek Division will feature a clinic by Mr. Gerard Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald is a visiting fellow at Linda Hall Library. He presented two wonderful clinics at the October 2018 meeting. One on railroad expansion at the beginning of World War II and the second his model railroad based on the Chesapeake and Ohio in Virginia. Now, he has offered to come back one more time and talk about steam engines and water issues. Please plan on attending. The meeting will be in the meeting room at Lakeview Village Eastside Terrace, 9100 Park Street, Lenexa. I hope to see you there.
