2 From THE SUPER S DESK. April 2010 Newsletter Turkey Creek Division The 25 th Anniversary Turkey Creek Division s annual meet was a great success with attending and 30+ venders. Our thanks to a show Chair, Louis Seibel and all those that volunteered their time and services. Clinic attendance was sparse and any feedback you supply why clinic attendance was low would be appreciated and guide us to do better next year. Visits to the 11 layouts on the tour showed a preference for those sites close to the meet site. Other details of the meet appear elsewhere in the lightning Slinger. Earlier this year I asked our NMRA treasurer (CFO) for a report on the activities and accomplishments of the Heart of America fund (HofA) that Turkey Creek Div., Gateway Div. and Mid-Continent Region each furnished $15,000 to NMRA. The purpose of the fund was to provide a permanent source of seed money for any project that would promote the NMRA and provide an opportunity to raise funds for the organization. Each project is to restore the fund with the initial net sales from the project. This past month I received a report of activities since 2005 from Frank Koch, NMRA CFO, Each report covered the previous 6 month period. 2/1/ no activity 8/1/ no activity 2/1/ funded the 2006 Calendar for $17,000 and repaid in full 8/1/ funded the 2006 Convention Clinic Book and two Books for $9,000 and repaid in full 2/1/ no activity 8/1/ funded Living Legend #7 and Heritage Car #17 for $14, and repaid in full 2/1/ funded the 2008 Calendar for $18, and repaid in full 8/1/ funded Heritage Car #18 and the Postwar Freight Car Fleet Book for $8, and repaid in full 2/1/ funded Logging Book and more Postwar Freight Car Fleet Books for $17, and repaid in full 8/1/ no activity 2/1/ funded down payment of $ on 75th Anniversary Print Project. (Prints will be delivered and paid for in the second half of 2010.) (Note: I'm not sure Mr. Feeney was aware of this specific funding as it was done by his predecessor at the time of transition. It was reported in the NMRA 2009 Financial Reports.) 8/1/ funded the Lumber Book for $ Books received at end of period and sales are just starting. There are at least two more books in development. We will do a 75th Anniversary car project this fall. We have just paid for the limited edition prints that were first offered at Milwaukee (reported next time). We will order replacement HO gauges either late this year or early next year as we supply both Micro mark and Walthers. The funds are in a restricted fund. The fund is like an internal rotating line of credit for the various projects. When funds are needed for a project that meets the criteria, the CFO creates journal entries that move the money from HofA to the specific project and the project then "owes" the fund. When sales create enough net income, the journals entries are reversed and the fund is restored. We have always repaid the fund in lump sums rather than on an individual sale or a dollar at a time. This month Miles Hale and Mike Porter will give the clinic on signals between the brakeman and the engineer. Miles worked as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad for several years. He takes us back to the time when hand signals and lanterns were the sign language for the railroad crew and Mike Porter is an engineer. Come back in time and relive the glory days of railroading and learn a new way to communicate with your fellow operators. This clinic includes both slides and live demonstrations. I look forward to seeing you at the August meeting. Shelly 2 Page August 2010 Lightning Slinger opbd

3 Short Recap of the Turkey Creek Division Train Show I would like to thank everyone how helped on the train show for the division. There was plenty of help for those who helped carry in mdse for the vendors to those who opened up their homes on the layout tours. As special thanks goes out to the members of the different committee chairman s that pulled the whole show together. Here are some facts from the show. The show had our largest turn out in the last 5 years over 300 came through the door. There were more tables sold than ever before. The layouts that were open were great. The door prizes only had two items left for over 150. Clinics did very well. Contest room was busy with some great models and photo graphs. The Boy Scouts from Troop 92 did a wonderful job in keeping us feed. Thank you to all of Heartland N-Trax members for having their layout again. It looks like we made a profit even after paying sales tax on everything. There are a lot of questions about next year s 2011 meet and 2012 meet that needs to be addressed by the members of Turkey Creek. These will be addressed in the next Lightning Slinger. Again Thanks to everyone who helped of just came to the meet. 4 I can understand the reasoning, Mike, and have no problem with it, but might it not be a good idea to put the same information in an upcoming copy of the NMRA Magaziine for the many members who don't/didn't attend the National Convention, and who also aren't part of this discussion group? I got my copy today, and thought it was a bit odd to be "after the fact", so was glad to see the explanation in this group. And BTW - kudos to the name change and what appears to be a focus change towards the membership rather than the Scale Rails approach, which always struck me as being an attempt at competing with the commercial mags. Matt Furze Life Member # 4871 On 7/23/2010 8:33 PM, Mike Brestel wrote: Yes, it happens every year because the economics have been the same every year. We investigate this each year with the printer and the shipper, and as long as it9s cheaper to do it this way, this is the way we9ll do it. We can9t print it in an earlier month because there would be no place to store all the extra copies until we needed them at the NTS. We would have to rent storage space at the show site, or else pay to ship them twice. We do it this way to save the members money, pure and simple. This is not the only year this has taken place. Off -hand I can remember receiving the Bulletin with the information for St. Louis a week after the convention. Can't the placement of the insert be moved up to the July or June issue. If you9re not coming to the show, why would you care whether it9s in there or not? Maybe you9ll even want to take a look to see who was at the show and who wasn9t. And if you are coming to the show, you don9t need to receive it at home before you leave--you9ll get one at the show. If you feel you9re wasting a copy, just turn it in at the booth on the way out the door, and our crack recruitment team will put it to use. Or take it home and use it in your division recruitment booth. Mike On 7/23/10 11:14 PM, "Randy Williamson" <pennsy@centurytel.net> wrote: Mike, 4 Page August 2010 Lightning Slinger opbd
