3 We were reminded that if we want to have refreshments, we need to feed the kitty. Old business: TECO report: Andy : The February Train Expo Colorado was successful. The next TECO will be June 15 & 16, followed by 3 days: September 13, 14 & 15 at the Freedom Financial Expo Center on North Nevada. New business: Upcoming May 4 PP Division train show/swap meet: Dusty: The show will be at Trinity United Methodist Church at 701 N 20th St. We are reusing old fliers with corrected dates. 28 tables are sold. The women of the Church will be selling lunch as in the past. We discussed the timing for the October show, and decided to keep it at October 5. Upcoming Regional Convention [Jack] The RMR convention will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Albuquerque Marriot Pyramid North, June 6 thru 9, see: wwwrarg2013.org. Jack has fliers. Module group [John]: our next set up will be The Pikes Peak Division show with a 32 x 12 set up; set up Friday, May 3 at 4 and run May 4. Module trailer [John]: the trailer works; we have the dog legs. Roy Thompson discussed a new PPD project: a 4 by 8 HO layout [pike] that we hope to have operational by the end of the next TECO. This will be the grand door prize at the September TECO. Publicity [Kristin Phillips & Joe Costa] We reviewed the new division flyer, and agreed to print 200 for $ Layout tour: Steve Berkheimer & Jeff Cahill are working on this. They are looking at August 24 and 25. Membership chairman: Bob Binder Contest: Jerry Bonds: This month s was passenger cars. Next month s contest will be tank cars. Next month s contest will be Passenger cars. Program: Wade Mountz presented a program on some of the paper work he will be using to operate his Santa Fe model railroad, with emphasis on car cards, also known as waybills. Contest results: First, John Emmot; Second, Rob Allen; Third, Wade Moluntz Next month s meeting will be May l0 at the Sand Creek Police Station, starting promptly at 7:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Bill Poley, Secretary Remember That The meetings now start at 7:00 PM SUPERINTENDENTS NOTES By Wade Mountz Well, our May train show/swap meet is over, finished, finalized and done. Many thanks to Dusty, Kacey and everyone else who contributed to its success and worked on it in so many, many ways. Dusty tells me that we had almost 100 paid admissions and by the time all of our bills are paid, we still made the division money. This was not our biggest show by a box car load, but it was still successful and I think everyone had fun and a good time except for John's Ford pick-up!! Dusty and Kacey will start planning the fall show on Monday. I think that all of the vendors were satisfied and will be returning for our fall show. I know I will, since I didn't sell all of my rare and precious railroad artifacts! The time is NOW for getting ready for the June TECO train show. The division has a railroad to build during the show this summer and fall. I hope all of you will try and participate in it's construction or donate items that Roy Thompson is still looking for. Try and contact Roy by phone or if you don't know what he is still trying to locate. For those of you who don't have a donation, your time, labor and skill will still be useful during construction at two TECO shows this year. Don't let this division project get finished without your help and expertise. Together, our division is stronger. Don't miss the upcoming program at the division meeting on May 10th. 4 MODULAR MUSINGS By You still have a little bit of time to make plans for the regional convention in New Mexico. It promises to be a VERY good one. Hope to see you there. We need a quick turnaround for this MM to get to Charles. The Division held our Spring Show on Saturday, May 4. It was an interesting show. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Charles was not able to bring his modules to the show. This resulted in the quick insertion of the Gelsinger and Emmot modules to make the shortened loop. While en-route to the show site with the PPD trailer, my pickup picked that time to die in the middle of Constitution Ave. Quick work by my wife (who arrived with the van to tow me out of traffic) and Dusty and JB Thistlethwaite who came to get the trailer and take it the rest of the way to show averted disaster. The trailer and the modules made it to the site where the crew was waiting to assemble the layout. While I didn t make it to the setup (I was waiting for AAA), Dusty had trains running by the end of the evening. Thanks to all who were there and assisted with the setup. A special thanks to JB for pulling us out of a problem. We were all there bright and early on Saturday to finish the setup and be ready for the nine o clock open. While it was a nice, but cool spring day, the turnout for the show was light by previous standards. We had lots and varied trains running through the day. Jerry Hansz, Jimmy Peterson, Myron Gelsinger, Bob Binder, John King, Ed Pagels all ran different consists of freight and passenger equipment. Tear down and departure were also a bit different. I had a commitment for as soon as possible after closing. Thus we disassembled and loaded the trailer and my van in near record time of about one hour and fifteen minutes. Wade Mounts volunteered to take the trailer to Roy s house while I proceeded to my destination. Thanks to all who participated in the event. Third place went to Wade Mountz with this Santa Fe combine. Photo by Charles Marchbanks. The next setup is for the two day TECO show on June 15 and 16 at the Freedom Financial Center. At this time, assuming that I get the new corner modules finished and that all the straight modules are available, we will build an L shape layout for that show. I would like to have a signup sheet for operators at this show. I will divide the days into two hour blocks for each of the three tracks. Individuals may commit to running trains during each time. John Up coming Division 4 Clinics/Programs: Dates are open for 2013 programs Bob Foltz will be presenting a program on 'Building Southwestern and Santa Fe structures with tips on making the complicated rather simple' on May 10th. OPERATING SESSION OPPORTUNITIES BY Eric Lundberg Operating a model railroad under simple prototype rules can add levels of interest to the hobby that may not present themselves running a layout as a lone wolf. While there is certainly a level of stress in keeping within the rules and schedules, operating sessions are mostly lots of fun. While you may only be operating a small part of the bigger picture, you are able to see a whole railroad come to life as it moves cars, delivers goods, and carries passengers and mail. There are many layouts within the Rocky Mountain Region where you can sample and become a part of an operating session. One of those is the Sandric & Lake Superior in Colorado Springs. The S&LS is currently seeking additional operators. In a regular session there are jobs for modelers. The Sandric is a DC system with nine mainline cabs, 7-8 yardmaster jobs and two dispatchers. Some trains run during a fully-staffed Saturday afternoon session. Currently those sessions are held in January, March, May, July, September, and November and begin around noon each time. Switchlists are used to route both trains and the cars they haul. Some trains do a lot of switching along the 2,100 feet of HO track, others simply make their way over the line with little work. The Sandric models the Denver & Rio Grande Western between Pueblo and Salt Lake City with the Moffat line from Denver also joining the fun. It s set in 1954 and utilizes both first generation diesels and steam power. Both standard and narrow gauge are modeled and there s a modest logging line. ERIC LUNDBERG 2013 CONTESTS Add to that multiple operators in an organized operating session and the fun grows dramatically. Such model railroad operation usually is based on some form of forwarding cars from one industry or town to another. At the same time there are schedules to be considered and meets with other trains something not always enjoyed when running trains by yourself. There are road jobs, yardmaster assignments and for those with a yen to do it all, dispatching the entire system.
