The recent surge of activity which outstripped Downtown s growth preceding the Olympics served to further establish the community s position as the vibrant heart of the region for decades to come. Look no further than the inauguration of the Atlanta Streetcar and the openings of both the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the College Football Hall of Fame to see the large-scale investment pouring into the area. The groundbreaking for the Atlanta Falcons stadium and the continued expansion of Georgia State University s footprint further heighten Downtown s visibility, as well as its desirability among residents, businesses, and visitors alike. As the primary organization dedicated to Downtown s continued growth for more than seventy years, Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) has brought together partners from both the private and public sectors to generate ideas and launch initiatives that spark positive change for the city. 3 36 HOURS IN DOWNTOWN With so many new reasons to be Downtown, now is the perfect time to take a weekend to get to know the city center a little better. Ride the Atlanta Streetcar s 2.7-mile route, which links the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site on the east and Centennial Olympic Park on the west. Stroll the flower box lined sidewalks, relax in a beautiful park, or discover a new restaurant. And if you have questions, members of the easy-to-spot Downtown Ambassador Force are always on hand to offer directions or dining suggestions or to escort you to your parking spot. FRIDAY SIPS IN THE CITY 5 p.m. Pull up a barstool or find a cozy booth at Meehan s Public House Downtown (meehansdowntown.com). This 4,000-square-foot Irish pub offers Emerald Isle charm with its comfortable atmosphere, hearty menu, and impressive beer list. Meehan s is a perfect gathering place for happy hour, as well as dinner with friends or late night fun. MODERN MEXICAN DINNER 6:30 p.m. Alma Cocina (alma-atlanta.com) brings a refreshing new approach to Mexican and Latin cuisine. Bright and fresh ingredients and traditional regional influences come together with other Latin American influences in a variety of vibrant, dishes from the braised goat huarache to the fried avocado tacos. Alma Cocina Meehan s Public House CULTURE ABOUNDS 8 p.m. Downtown is home to several topnotch performance venues, which offer high-caliber performances year-round, among them: Theatrical Outfit, Rialto Center for the Arts, and Shakespeare Tavern. In fall of 1995, Theatrical Outfit (theatricaloutfit.org), Atlanta s second-oldest professional theater company, relocated Downtown to the Balzer Theater (also the site of Herren s, the first restaurant in Atlanta to voluntarily desegregate in 1962). Productions slated for this season include My Children! My Africa! in October, The Gifts of the Magi in December, and Silent Sky in February. Georgia State University s Rialto Center for the Arts (rialto.gsu.edu) is an 800- seat performing arts venue in the hip, historic Fairlie-Poplar district. The venue is home to the Rialto Series, presenting the best of national and international jazz, world music, and dance, as well as School of Music performances and the Atlanta Film Festival among many others. The New American Shakespeare Tavern (shakespearetavern.com) is a replica of an Elizabethan playhouse and boasts a British pub menu, a broad selection of Irish ales, and robust production schedule, which includes Macbeth, Charles Dickens A Christmas Story, and The Winter s Tale this season. NIGHT OUT ON EDGEWOOD NUE 11 p.m. The hipster-magnet strip of Edgewood Avenue offers a range of inexpensive, idiosyncratic bars and surprisingly swanky restaurants. Upstairs, people pack church pews as they wait for their turn at the Ping-Pong table. The Sound Table (thesoundtable.com) is part speakeasy and part dance club. Enjoy innovative small plates, like the rabbit wings and octopus ceviche taquitos, as well as a sophisticated cocktail menu and Atlanta s best DJs spinning for latenight dancing. Don t let the unassuming storefront or the heavy-handed Italian comfort food fool you; Noni s Bar & Deli (nonisdeli.com) is known to host a prodigious dance party itself. SATURDAY ATLANTA ON A PLATE 11 a.m. An urban food court, Sweet Auburn Curb Market (thecurbmarket.com) offers a diverse array of authentic cuisines from a variety of vendors. This is a great place to get one or two items from several shops and enjoy a little bit of everything. Try savory and sweet British-inspired pies, like the sweet and spicy pork or country chicken at Panbury s Double Crust Pies (panburys. com). Opened by a former Morehouse College professor, Bell Street Burritos (bellstreetburritos.com) pays homage to a locally beloved and now-defunct burrito joint called Tortillas with perfectly portioned San Francisco style burritos topped the way you like it. Sweet Auburn BBQ (sweetauburnbbq.com) serves up slow-smoked barbecue meats, award-winning wings and ribs, and delicious sides. Here, classic Southern barbecue goes hand in hand with modern eclectic influences. The complex also houses several fresh meat and produce booths, a pharmacy, and a bookstore. REVERENT REFLECTION 1 p.m. In June, nearly a decade after Evelyn Lowery, Juanita Abernathy, and Andrew College Football Hall of Fame Young launched the project with then-mayor Shirley Franklin, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (civilandhumanrights.org) opened its doors. This new museum, adjacent to the ever-popular World of Coca-Cola museum and the Georgia Aquarium, tells the story of the historic U.S. civil rights movement and its connection to current global human rights struggles. In addition to a floor dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. s personal papers, exhibits include a lunch counter that replicates the nonviolent protests of the 1960s and an evolving, interactive world map that updates current human rights crises. GO LONG 3:30 p.m. The newest addition to the Centennial Olympic Park adjacent museum medley is the College Football Hall of Fame (cfbhall.com), which opened in August. Located on the southern side of the park near the Georgia World Congress Center, the museum offers insight into all aspects of the game. Take a 3-D tour of some of the most famous stadiums in the game, try your hand at calling memorable plays in college football history, or run your own play on the forty-five-yard indoor field. A VIEW WITH A TWI 6:30 p.m. The revolving restaurant atop the Hyatt Regency recently reopened after closing a decade ago. The Polaris (atlantaregency.hyatt.com) was renowned Atlanta architect John Portman s first go at a revolving restaurant and topped the tallest structure in the city when it opened BLT Steak in Today, the Polaris rotates once again, making a full turn every forty-five minutes, providing guests with panoramic views of Downtown Atlanta. Enjoy handcrafted cocktails and appetizers of small, shared plates, like the deconstructed Maine lobster cocktail, braised veal cheeks, or rabbit sausage with quail eggs. RARE OR RAW 8 p.m. BLT Steak (e2hospitality.com/blt-steakatlanta) is both a raw bar and an American steakhouse with a sophisticated, bistro ambiance. Indulge in signature warm popovers, along with specially selected steaks, and fresh seafood. Weekly blackboard specials highlight seasonal flavors and local ingredients. TAKE A SPIN 10 p.m. Perfect for a quiet escape steps from many of Atlanta s most popular attractions, the SkyView (skyviewatlanta. com) Ferris wheel rotates forty-two cozy, climate-controlled gondolas nearly twenty stories high for an unforgettable view overlooking the Atlanta skyline and Centennial Olympic Park. Spin in style in the VIP gondola, where you ll enjoy Ferrari leather seats, a glass floor, and an extended flight time. SkyView SUNDAY A BETTER BRUNCH 10 a.m. Your French toast, chicken and waffles, or black bean and egg sandwich is even more satisfying at Cafe 458 (atlantacss.org). Located in the Historic Old Fourth Ward, Cafe 458 serves up specialty brunch dishes concocted by a Le Cordon Bleu trained chef. Thanks to a volunteer kitchen and wait staff, all proceeds, including tips, go directly to support programs and services for the homeless via the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (formerly known as Samaritan House of Atlanta). The district s restaurant row is home to more than twenty restaurants and bars within walking distance of Philips Arena and the Georgia Dome, making it the go-to location for meeting up with friends before concerts or games. CAP/ADID s recently completed traffic signalization project combined with more than 90,000 available parking spaces make it a breeze to drive Downtown and find a place to stow your car close to where you re going. Great bike rides! Currently under construction, delineated bike paths on John Portman Boulevard and Peachtree Center Avenue will provide connectivity to both the Atlanta BeltLine and Midtown.
