1 Twin City Postcard Club Volume XXXI TCPC Number SEPT/OCT VOLUME XXXIII NUMBER 5 The Zoo in Minnehaha Park by Dean Borghorst One of Minneapolis most beautiful parks is the one surrounding the famous falls on Minnehaha Crook. It has lovely forest areas, great expanses of lawns and beautiful flower gardens. But I bet most people don t know that there was once a zoo in the park. IN THIS ISSUE Fall Postcard Show 1, 7 Notice of Plans to Incorporate Zoo in Minnehaha Park Koehler Hold to Light Postcards The Dayton Company 2 1, 8, Advertising 10 Upcoming Meetings 11 Directions 12 Starting in 1894, people donated animals to the Minneapolis Park Board. The zoo in the park came to include moose, fox, prairie dogs, a mountain lion, bears, an alligator, sea lions, eagles and many more. When Robert ish Jones established his private zoo next to Minnehaha Park in 1907, most of the park board animals were sold to him. This new zoo was called Longfellow Gardens. You can still see the statue of the past Longfellow and the replica of his home which remains. The park board kept elk, deer, bears and buffalo in the Minnehaha Park until the 1920 s. These cards represent all that is left of an era when there was a private zoo in Minnehaha Park. 2 Notice of Intent to Incorporate TCPC The board of directors has contemplated the need to incorporate TCPC in the state of Minnesota - something that requires membership action. Copies of the proposed by-laws and constitution will be available for members to pick up and review at the November TCPC business meeting. This topic will be brought up for discussion and a vote to incorporate. Why incorporate? In this day and age, it is an advantage for any club or organization to incorporate itself in order to be recognized as a non-profit (501c) group so as to avoid potential issues. This establishes legal protection for the officers and members of the club in separating personal assets from the club. Cost for incorporation is low but by-laws and a constitution must be filed with the application for incorporation and that is why we need the documents. Will this change anything on a regular basis? No, it simply is put in place as a way to provide the legal protection as stated. If anyone wishes to understand more, google incorporation in Minnesota and see what is documented. If we do have business meetings, the secretary will keep minutes as needed so there are records of what transpired If we agree on this, when will we do it? Shortly after the November meeting so we can elect the officers as documented. We will need a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer as elected officials. This suggests we d need those individuals to be nominated and elected in December s meeting along with the other positions for the TCPC Board of Directors. Welcome New Members: Frederick Wahtera Wayzata, MN type of card collection not listed Sherry Sheridan Luck, WI type of card collection not listed Don t forget to mark your calendar concerning the new location and the time of the TCPC Postcard Show. 3 Koehler Hold to Light Postcards By Alan Calavano A Hold to Light (HTL) postcard displays a different image if held up to a strong light. Some changes are as simple as day to night; others as complicated as winter to summer. Typically, the moon appears in the sky and the windows in buildings and vehicles light up. The hold to light effect is accomplished by creating multilayered cards containing die cuts and/or transparencies. The Joseph Koehler printing company of New York, NY is particularly well known for their early hold to light postcards which were printed in Berlin, Germany. The following checklist of Koehler Hold to Light postcards is from David Parry of the San Francisco Bay Area Post Card Club (SFBAPCC): J. (Joeseph) Koehler HTL Postcards NEW YORK BERLIN. 6 The Dayton Company by John L. Cole One does not come across many sets of Minnesota postcards. Not that they aren't out there but it s unusual to find two or more at one time. I came across six of a set of eight Dayton Company postcards. They are a little larger than a regular postcard, measuring 5 3/4 by 3 3/4 inches in size. They were unnumbered but on the back it says Upon the reverse side of this card is one of the eight rooms in the home furnishing studios of the Dayton Company, Minneapolis I am assuming that there are only eight cards because of what is said. The description of the cards are as follows: 1) Dining room with fireplace 2) Dining room, more formal 3) Bedroom with two double beds 4) Bedroom with one queen size bed 5) Sun porch with wicker chairs 6) Kitchen (but note there is a rug on the floor) In the right corner of the cards it looks like the letters FE-K. Great cards for any Dayton Company collector. PAGE 6

7 Fall Show Continued from Page 1 The fall show will be at the West St Paul Armory (on Robert Street) for the first time and is bigger so that additional dealers can be invited. The dates for the show are October 17 & 18. At the time of this printing, Dave is still working on who will be in attendance but dealers are expected from Minnesota and the surrounding states. A hallmark of the club fall show is a display of competitive and non-competitive boards showing various member s collecting interests They provide an opportunity to show some of your collection to our members and the public. Rules are few and you can designate whether you wish your board to be judged. Information on constructing a board will be provided at a future meeting. Our shows have been successful due to many members volunteering to help with setup, takedown, admissions, publicity, and other show activities. The same people tend to help run our shows and they are greatly appreciated but we very much welcome new volunteers. For information related to the boards or to volunteering, contact Dave Johnson at See you at the show! PAGE 7
