2 Itinerary Overview On this active Panama eco-adventure discover the rich natural and cultural history of this land bridge between continents and seas. Expert naturalist Panama guides lead hikes and easy kayaking through a range of tropical ecosystems teaming with wildlife. In jungle lowlands outside Panama City explore Las Cruces Trail, a route created 400 years ago to transport riches across the isthmus for ships headed to Spain. Navigate in a jungle boat around the rainforest islands in the Panama Canal, and walk the Pipeline Road trail where scientists study the rain forest and birdwatchers set world records for counts. We hike some of the most scenic trails in Panama through lush cloud forests amongst the volcanoes of the Chiriqui Highlands in search of one of the most beautiful birds in the world: the resplendent quetzal. Here we learn about Panama s shade grown coffee at the Janson Family coffee farm, and then conclude our Panama adventure on a palm-lined white sand beach on the Pacific where you can swim, surf, kayak, dolphin and whale watch, or just relax and contemplate the tropical beauty. 3 Itinerary in Detail DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN PANAMA Airport reception and transfer to your hotel. Overnight at The Beach House Playita Amador. DAY 2: LAS CRUCES TRAIL AND PANAMA CANAL JUNGLE BOAT Early this morning meet your naturalist guide and drive 45- minutes to Camino de Cruces (Las Cruces Trail). This historic stone trail was built by the Spanish in the early years of the colony to transportt riches from Panama City on the shores of the Pacific Ocean to Fort San Lorenzo on the Caribbean Sea. We hike a 9.5 Km (6 miles) stretch of the trail (approx. 5 hours) that has been protected within Soberania National Park. The mostly flat trail takes us through magnificent rainforests teeming with exotic wildlife and historic landmarks. Be prepared for uneven, muddy and slippery terrain and expect to get your shoes wet when crossing little creeks along the way. We reach the ruins in the town of Venta de Cruces by the Chagres River where we board a comfortable expedition boat in the jungle lowlands. After a picnic lunch on a small island, we voyage across Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal where we pass gigantic cargo ships among the beautiful natural surroundings of the canal watershed. Along the way, we have the opportunity to spot green iguana and three-toed sloth resting on tree branches, monkeys cavorting in the trees, caimans, crocodiles, osprey in the hunt for peacock bass, snail kite and keel-billed toucan among other wildlife. Gatun Lake was formed as part of the Panama Canal in With a surface of 423 Km2 (163 sq mi), at the time of its creation it was the largest man-made lake in the world. Rivers within the Panamaa Canal watershed provide water for the operation of the lock system. Nearly 200 million liters (52 million gallons) of fresh water are used for every ship that transits through the Panama Canal from one ocean to another. Our expedition boat transits among rainforest covered islandss in Gatun Lake to search for whitemonkey, and Geoffrey s tamarin. Return to the hotel and try the typical faced capuchin, mantled howler monkey, spider Panamanian fare at Mi Ranchito Restaurant. Overnight at The Beach House Playita Amador. [BL] Note: This trail requires good physical conditionn and will take you through small rivers and muddy, slippery, rugged and uneven rainforest terrain. Since you will be on a boat afterwards, you might bring another set of sandals and clothes in your backpack. DAY 3: RAINFOREST DISCOVERY D CENTER--PIPELINE ROAD AND MIRAFLORES LOCKS Early in the morning our expert naturalist guide takes us to Soberania National Park in the Panama Canal watershed and Pipeline Road, where Audubon Society holds its world Christmas bird count and has identifiedd 357 speciess of birds in just 24 hours. At the Rainforest Discovery Center we ascend the 100 foot tall rainforest canopy tower looking out over the vast forest for the morning flight of keel-billed toucans, red-lored Amazon parrots and the silent and stealthy movement of mantled howler monkeys. -3-

4 During World War II a pipeline was built along the Panama Canal to transport fuel from one ocean to the other in the event the waterway was attacked. The now abandoned gravel road built to maintain the pipeline provides excellent walking access to Soberania's 55,000 acres of tropical rainforest. The park boasts an impressive list of 525 species of birds ncluding the black hawk-eagle, black-cheeked woodpecker, black-breasted puffbird, broad-billed motmot, blue cotinga, purple-throated fruitcrow, masked tytira, violaceous trogon, fasciated antshrike, shining honeycreeper, and a great array of North American migrants, amazing for novice or experienced birdwatchers alike! Soberania is also habitat of large tropical cats, tamandua (anteater), sloth, 4 species of monkeys, agouti, and much more, including 59 endemic plant species in 4 life zones. We enjoy a rainforest picnic lunch and visit the Miraflores Locks Visitorss Center at the Panama Canal where we learn about the canal s amazing history and get a close-up view of the shipss passing through the locks before we head back to our hotel. The hotel is located at the Pacificc entrance of the Panama Canal on a popular causeway where local families and lovers congregate in an open area full of shops and restaurants. Here you can rent bikes, visit the Biomuseum, or just walk and people watch. Overnight at The Beach House Playita Amador. [BL] DAY 4: CHIRIQUI HIGHLANDS-- JANSON FAMILY COFFEE Farm Transfer to Albrook domestic airport for a midmorning flight to David, capital of the Chiriqui province, in highlands of western Panama. Chiriqui is the country s breadbasket and contains some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in Central America. Drive to the quaint town of Volcan through a countryside of flower, fruit and produce farms, coffee plantations and lush tropical cloud forests. At the Jansonn family s coffee farm we are invited in to learn about planting, harvesting, processing, roasting and packaging the world class coffee Del Fino and Geisha. This coffee is grown at the perfect altitude in rich volcanic soil and processed combining the best of tradition and technology. After our coffee tasting, choose between a nature hike with bird watching or a horseback ride around the most beautiful areas of the highlands. The lakes on the family farm are the highest natural lakes and wetlands in Panama with breathtaking vistas, beautiful tropical forest, world-class birding, and amazing wildlife. After a long day settle in at a charming mountain resort tucked away in the highland cloud forest. At 7,260 feet above sea level (2,2000 meters), nestled in the enchanting primary cloud forests of Volcan Baru National Park, Los Quetzales Lodge & Spa is an idyllic mountain retreat that is part of the Amistad Biosphere Reserve spanning the continental divide with Costa Rica. Overnight at Hotel Los Quetzales [BL] DAY 5: LOS QUETZALES RESERVEE LA AMISTAD NATIONAL PARK Hike and explore the well-established trails within two national parks deep into the cloud forest; log bridges over rushing streams, waterfalls, trees festooned with lichen and epiphytes, trodding along muddy footpaths full of roots and rocks. Upon return, freshen up for lunch in a local restaurant and then our private naturalist Panama guide leads a hike in La Amistad International Park. Shared with neighboring Costa Rica and recognized in 1982 as a World Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Amistad is located at a point on the Central American natural land bridge where flora and fauna from North and South America extend their maximum range and create a unique species mix creating stunning bio-diversity. Be vigilant looking out for the resplendent quetzal, silvery-fronted tapaculo, Andean pygmy-owl, The rest of the day is at your leisure. 5 DAY 6: LOS QUETZALES TRAIL-- BOCA BRAVA ISLAND Head out in the morning for a 4-5 hour hike on the beautiful Los Quetzales Trail from Cerro Punta to Boquete through the cloud forest on the flanks of Baru Volcano National Park. The Baru Volcanoo is the highest peak of Panama at over 10,000 feet. We make several stops along the way to enjoy the spectacular views and to look for the elusive resplendent quetzal. After lunch, drive to Puerto Pedregal in David (2 hrs) on the Pacific Coast and a short boat reaches the Hotel Cala Mia on Boca Brava Island. Afternoon is at leisure, additional tours are available or you can enjoy a walk on the beach, the ocean, a spa treatmentt or just relax in the fresh water infinity pool which has great views of the Pacific Ocean. Overnight at Cala Mia Boutique Island Resort [B] DAY 7: BOCA BRAVA ISLAND I Enjoy a full day at leisuree to kick back and relax or be as active as you want. Overnight at Cala Mia Boutique Island Resort [B] DAY 8: BOCA BRAVA HIKE H Starting at the hotel we traverse the island habitat looking out for monkeys, birds and colorful flora as we hike (3 hrs) from the mangrove forest uphill through the jungle, passing small farms, and stopping to swim at an isolated beach. The hike ends at restaurant Boca Brava where you can enjoy a cold drink and a tasty lunch (before riding the boat back to the hotel). We suggest to wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen and hat, swimsuit, water, towel and some money for lunch. Note thatt for this walk the local guide at the hotel speaks limited English but he is a great animal spotter! Overnight at Cala Mia Boutique Island Resort [B] DAY 9: PANAMA CITY - Casco Viejo Walk Late morning boat ride to Bocas Chica on the mainland and transfer to David (1 hr) to board a flight back to Panama City. Upon arrival a local guide takes us on a short walk around Casco Viejo to visit the Canal Museum and if the weather is hot why not enjoy homemade French vanilla ice cream!
