2 Colonia del Sacramento Aerial view BIT Center Cultural Heritage of Humanity Declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1995, it s plain to see that Colonia del Sacramento is a historic gem. Simply by walking around it s easy to see the rich melting pot of cultures that contributed to the origins of this town. Calle de los Suspiros Historic Neighborhood The starting point of the visit to the city, the Interpretation Center (Centro BIT) presents features of the natural and cultural heritage of Colonia and Uruguay. It offers an innovative 11-minute, 360 degree audiovisual immersion, touch screens with information of interest, a sound bank of Uruguayan folk music, an artistic mural of the History of Colonia, and a room specifically for children. 3 Fortresses & Lighthouses Santa Teresa Fort Rocha Hill Fort Montevideo Small Fort of San Miguel Rocha Faros Fortalezas Alongside the coast of the River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean lay a series of fortresses and lighthouses that used to guard and protect the sea. From Colonia to Rocha the lighthouses are: Del Farallon, La Panela, Colonia del Sacramento, El Cerro de Montevideo, Isla de Flores, Punta Brava, Punta del Este, Jose Ignacio, Isla de Lobos and Cabo Santa Maria. Hill Fortresses can be found in Montevideo and Rocha, and there are two more: La Fortaleza de Santa Teresa and El Fuerte de San Miguel. 4 Architectural Torre de los Homenajes Estadio Centenario Montevideo Palacio Salvo Montevideo Palacio Lapido Montevideo Iglesia Cristo Obrero Atlantida, Canelones Heritage Montevideo exhibits many examples of buildings of different styles from different architectural periods such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. For instance, the Centenario Football Stadium, where the first ever World Cup was played, the Montevideo Cathedral, the Cabildo building, Club Uruguay, the door to the city, and the beautifully vibrant Reus Neighborhood. Ventorrillo de la Buena Vista Villa Serrana, Lavalleja There are also magnificent buildings constructed with natural materials such as the Ventorrillo de la Buena Vista designed by architect, Julio Vilamajo or the unique ceramic constructions of engineer, Eladio Dieste. 5 Museums Museo de Historia del Arte Montevideo Museo de la Revolución Industrial Río Negro Uruguay is home to museums, cultural centers, historic houses and galleries, where our visitors can find beautiful pieces of artwork by Uruguayan artists such as Juan Manuel Blanes, Rafael Barradas, Pedro Figari, Joaquin Torres Garcia, Jose Cuneo, Luis Alberto Solari, Manuel Espinola Gomez, and Ignacio Iturria, amongst others. Every year in December, during Museums at Night, artists from all backgrounds; literature, dance, theater, performing arts, and music, all get together at one big party. 6 Performing Arts Teatro Solís Montevideo National Dr. Adela Reta SODRE Auditorium Montevideo Carlos Pazos Ballet in the Teatro Solis Montevideo Scene from the film, The Pope s Toilet Montevideo is an important center for performing arts, great theater and a place where summertime is no excuse for a break. The billboard is always full of an array of different experiences from classical to modern, dances and other festivities. The National SODRE Dr. Adela Reta Auditorium has become symbolic of our national and regional culture. On the 21st of November 2009, the auditorium reopened its doors to artists and audiences alike. Today the cultural space is home to SODRE artists such as the National Ballet Company, under the masterful direction of award winning director Julio Bocca. Cinema has also garnered much attention lately here in Uruguay with international prizes being awarded in Montevideo, Punta del Este and Piriapolis to Uruguayan film makers and collaborators. In Uruguay we value quality and innovation as vital aspects that stimulate the audience and provide a refreshing break from commercial cinema

7 View from Río Uruguay Anglo English Industrial Countryside Fray Bentos Cultural Heritage of Humanity On the banks of the River Uruguay, the then Anglo meatpacking plant in the city of Fray Bentos was declared Industrial Heritage of Humanity in July 2015 by UNESCO. The facility was installed by German company, Liebigs in the second half of the 19th century and came under English management in 1924 under the new name of Anglo. The need for meat and corned beef for the war efforts at the time made this plant the kitchen of the world effectively making, Fray Bentos a household name. The complex includes docks and living quarters for the administration and work force. Today the ex-plant is a museum dedicated to the Industrial Revolution where visitors can learn about the history of the significance of the meatpacking plant for the region where workers from 60 different countries operated side by side until Today, the space is home to an exciting, uniquely intact, and protected tourist attraction

8 Natural Park Grotto Palace First Geopark in Uruguay and second in Latin America Granite rocks In the central region of Uruguay, two hours outside the capital of Montevideo in the department of Flores, visitors can find the first Geopark in the country and the second in Latin America, recognized by UNESCO and simultaneously part of the Global Network of Geoparks. With more than 2,000 km2 to offer, visitors can explore scientifically and culturally important sites including two protected areas (Chamanga Cave Paintings and the Grutas del Palacio). These geological rock formations date back up to 2.5 billion years. Walking through these peculiar caves reaching up to 2 meters in height takes our visitors back more than 70 million years. The grottos contribute to the rich cultural and natural heritage and the variety of other activities and possibilities Uruguay has to offer including gastronomy, beautiful hotels, ranches, adventure, sport, hiking, boat rides, fauna and flora, museums, culture, art and other spectacles. 9 Bruno Larghero Rafael Perotti Candombe Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Intangible Heritage Candombe and Tango, Cultural Heritage of Humanity Tango, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Uruguayan music is best represented through its folk genres, candombe, and tango. The latter two have been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The iconic tango hymn, La Cumparsita was composed by Uruguayan Gerardo Rodriguez in Also, Carlos Gardel is internationally recognized for popularizing the genre in the 20th century the same way Alfredo Zitarrosa embodied the essence of popular music with his unique voice. The Uruguayan Carnaval Festivities are the longest of their kind in the world and have been designated of national interest by the Uruguayan government. The festivities last all the way through February, filling the streets with vivid and colorful sounds, dance, and murga. The candombe drums during las llamadas can be heard from a distance as each group competes with the next in the official contest at the Ramon Collazo Theater, commonly known as the Teatro de Verano in Montevideo. The festivities aren t limited to summer time as other events and festivals take place all year round from rock and roll concerts to folk shows from all over the country. 10 Gallery and cafe with artistic craft exposition Street Fairs & Artistic Craftwork Arts and crafts made with agate and amethyst Tristan Narvarja street market Montevideo Ramón Martínez Recognized for its quality around the world, Uruguayan craftsmanship often consists of pieces made from wood, leather, bone, wool and precious stones that can be appreciated and purchased through speciality stores and the numerous street fairs on specific days which operate all year round. Precious agate and amethysts can be found in the departments of Artigas, Rivera and Tacuarembo and are exported all over the world. Mate is a beverage traditional to Latin America and especially to Uruguay. It consists of a tea infusion of shredded yerba mate leaves that is served in a gourd and sipped with a straw made of metal. Traditionally served with hot water, the taste is often described as slightly bitter. Mate, permanent companion for strolls and street markets 18 19

11 Gastronomy Roger Pacilio Olive groves Bodegas The Uruguayan culinary experience combines traditions from a variety of different influences that come together in popular dishes like our classic grilled meat alongside other Spanish and Italian elements in the kitchen. The chivito and torta frita are staple items for the Uruguayan palate. Uruguayan cuisine is often accompanied with a variety of different wines that have been recognized internationally for their taste and quality, especially Tannat. Uruguay has been successful in producing olive oil of excellent quality, generally consisting of extra virgin oil that takes everyone by surprise. Other noteworthy national products include craft liquors, alfajores, sweets and jams made with dried fruit, and other milk based treats like dulce de leche and cheeses

12 Artigas Plateau Sail boats on Uruguay River Historic and Cultural Heritage The Artigas Plateau is a beautiful place overlooking the Uruguay River where a monument dedicated to General Jose Artigas can be found surrounded by an extensive park. In the large estate, tourists and locals alike pay a visit to the Center for Interpretation where history and technology work together to take you on a journey through 200 years of history, Patriarca festival more than 100 riders pay homage to General Artigas in a show of horsemanship as they trot down in unison from one end of the department to the other, covering hundreds of kilometers. Bonfires are shared while song and dance celebrates the age old traditions of rural culture.
