2 BIRDS IN QUITO - ECUADOR Ecuador has an area of 283,560 square kilo. It straddles the Andes Mountains, and is a prime location in the middle of the world. The influence of the ocean currents also give rise to an unique environment for the 1887 species distributed throughout the country, from the snow peaks of the highlands to the humid heat of the Pacific Coast, as well in the Amazon jungle and the Galapagos Islands. The Metropolitan District of Quito, which is geographically located at latitude 0 0 0, is an ideal place to observe endemic and rare birds in the region. The diversity of ecological zones and microclimates starting at between 500 and surpassing 4,700, make this the perfect habitat for 542 species of birds, allowing travelers to go from the high Andean plains to the interior of the Andean forests of Chocó.
