Coast Located at the Equator, on the Western side of South America. Ecuador is crossed from North to South by the Andes, which divide the country into four distinctly different geographical regions: the Coast, with beaches and tropical jungles; the Andean Sierras, with small villages and volcanoes, the Amazon basin, with it s emerald rain forest; and the world-famous Galapagos Day Islands, 5. Machu wildlife Picchu sanctuary. Cusco Day 6. Cusco Lima You can travel, from tropical climates to temperate or frozen landscapes in just a 35 1 matter of hours, year round.

Ecuadorians are famous for their hospitality and unmatched service. The famous phrase: mi casa es su casa (my house is your house), is heartfelt. In a short frase: Ecuador is like having all of South America in a nutshell. Day 5. Machu Picchu Cusco Day 6. Cusco Lima Galapagos Islands 35 1

4 Quito History, Culture and Life Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is located in a plateau, at 2,800 meters above sea level. The many colonial churches show a mixture of styles and beauty in their architecture (baroque, Spanish, Flemish, Moorish, and pre-columbian), plazas, and historical buildings have helped our city to be declared a cultural heritage sight by UNESCO. After sun set, the city takes to magical colors. Enjoy it from a popular chiva bus on an after hours tour companied by live music and local drinks. Hand in hand with the colonial beauty of Quito is a blooming commercial and modern city; with a fine selection of 5 star hotels, convention centers, museums, and good restaurants. Quito has, since its foundation, been known as a city of culture. Local music at dinner and folkloric ballet shows. Sculptures and paintings that combine pre Inca, Inca and colonial art expressions decorate many buildings. 30 minutes north of Quito lies a must see for any visitor: the Equatorial Monument La Mitad del Mundo, situated right on the Equator line. Other attractions are: Oswaldo Guayasamin s Museum, or the archeological Central Bank s Museum as well as various art galleries and handicraft shops.

5 Indian Markets Ecuador s high Andean sierras and their spectacular landscapes are full of small towns with their own cultural expressions and events. Otavalo -famous for its Indian market, the best known and most colorful of South America. Anything from wool textiles, native fruits and fresh vegetables, to jewelry, ceramics, baskets, woodcarvings, naif paintings, embroidery, assorted tools and even domestic animals all for sale or trade. Markets in Ecuador are the most colorful and traditional places of the country. They are rich cultural sites where natives meet with their friends and relatives while engaging in ancient bargaining routines, where socializing may be more important than financial reward. Mon: Ambato and Otavalo Tue: Latacunga, Riobamba, Guano and Otavalo Wed: Pujilí, Cotacachi, Peguche and Otavalo Thu: Saquisilí, Tulcán, Cuenca, Guamote, Sangolqui and Otavalo Fri: Ibarra, Ingapirca and Otavalo Sat: Otavalo, Riobamba, Zumbahua, Latacunga, Guaranda, Salasaca, Pelileo, Cotacachi, Guano, Azogues and Loja Sun: Cayambe, Pujilí, Licto, Saraguro, Gualaceo, Chordeleg, Guano, Machachi, Malacatos, Loja, Peguche, Cuenca, Salcedo, Tulcan, Misahuallí, Lago Agrio, Penipe, Sangolqui, Santo Domingo de los Colorados and Otavalo.

6 The Andean Highlands A series of fertile valleys between two main mountain ranges of scenic beauty are dotted with small colorful villages and charming colonial cities like Ambato, Riobamba and Cuenca, each with its own peculiar characteristics. Snow-capped mountains on both eastern and western Andean corridors the most famous being mount Chimborazo, (6,310 meters/ feet above sea level) Ecuador s highest mountain and Cotopaxi the highest active volcano on earth (5,907 meters/ feet. Riobamba, the starting point of one of the world s most exciting narrow gage railroads and, as part of it, the Devil s Nose, a masterpiece of engineering where a series of switchbacks bring you hundreds of feet down an almost vertical wall.

7 Cuenca, amidst four rivers. The main treasure to be found in town is its colonial architecture. Cobblestone streets, old adobe houses with heavy wood-carved doors that guard fountains and court yards, colonial churches and colorful plazas, were all built with an Indian soul under Spanish vigilance. Many Museums preserve treasures of colonial art. UNESCO declared Cuenca a cultural heritage site. The artisanship of its people working with ceramics, wrought iron, gold and silver creating precious jewels, the famous hand-weaved straw hats, traditional cuisine, are just some of the reasons Cuenca can highlight your trip to Ecuador. Surrounding villages Gualaceo, Chordeleg, San Joaquin among others are home to Indigenous markets, Ikat and basket weavings and handmade jewelry. Nearby is the colorful scenery of the lakes in Cajas National Park.

8 Ingapirca The place where Cañari priests adored the moon and where the Incas later adored the sun. The Ingapirca complex is part of Ecuador s pre- Hispanic legacy, so far the most important archaeological site in Ecuador. Jewelry and ceramics of these cultures, are displayed at the site s museum.

9 The Amazon Rainforest These tropical lowlands to the east of Ecuador cover an area of nearly sq. Km ( miles), 45% of the country s territory. The eastern flank of the Andes forms the continental division from where all rivers flow into the Amazon basin to form a complex network of waterways feeding the exuberant and dense primary rainforest. Many of these rivers are navigable, enabling travelers to venture deeper into Ecuador s Amazon Basin. Strict environmental and cultural rules of conservation, and consciously developed tourism infrastructure help preserve this ecosystem. A variety of tours offer opportunities to see and photograph the wild flora and fauna of the area, while respecting the territories of the indigenous inhabitants. Our excursions take us to places with many animals, like tapirs and monkeys. Freshwater dolphins, various species of fish, caimans and snakes are found as well as hundreds of brightly colored butterflies and other insects. Toucans, parrots and other species of birds exist in an incredible array of biodiversity. The Amazon basin can be reached easier and faster from Quito than from any other Andean capital city.
