PRIVATE HALF DAY MOON VALLEY - PM This tour gives the feeling that we are walking on the surface of another planet. The 43-kilometre ride leads to the Cordillera de la Sal (salt mountain range) a group of attractive natural stone and sand sculptures that millions of years ago formed part of a large lake. Once here, visitors are taken to a surprising lookout to enjoy views of the valley and next destinations. The next stop is the awesome Valle de Marte (valley of Mars) also known as the Valle de la Muerte (death valley) with its peculiar stone formations and absolute desert landscape: no vegetation or insects to be seen in what is considered one of the country s most barren regions. Next, the tour ventures on to Las Tres Marias (the three Marys), an interesting geological formation near an old salt mine. FULL DAY ALTIPLANIC LAGOONS, ATACAMA SALT FLAT & TOCONAO After leaving the hotel, the tour starts out with a 350 km (217 mi) drive to Salar de Atacama (Atacama salt flat) Chile s largest salt deposit. The trip continues to the Altiplano (high plateau) lagoons located 90 km (55 mi) from San Pedro, at an altitude of 4,500 m (14,763 ft.) and 18 km (11 mi) south of Socaire, one of the seven sectors that make up the Los Flamencos National Reserve. This area offers a unique habitat for seldom seen fauna, such as the horned coot, Chilean flamingo, small flamingo, Baird s sandpiper, Andean avocet, puna plover, crested duck and Andean goose. The area is surrounded by impressive volcanoes formed in remote geological times simultaneously with the rising of the Andes mountain range and has pools of emerald-green waters enclosed by the Andean peaks. 2 The first part of the tour provides an explanation of the skies seen through the naked eye. It offers basic concepts of what is viewed, such as constellations, what to learn from them, how to read a map of the skies and recognize important stars. When the moon is visible, a second possibility is offered involving direct observation through telescopes and taking pictures. This is a unique experience that cannot be compared with images found in books or in the Internet. The chance of viewing the stars or a planet like Saturn definitely offers unforgettable moments. Early departure and drive to the El Tatio Geysers geothermal field, located at an altitude of 4,000 meters (13,000 ft.) that offers an amazing spectacle at dawn: steaming fumaroles that can reach up to 6 meters of altitude (19 ft.). The experience is complemented with guided walks through the hot craters of mud and small geysers. On the road back to San Pedro the possibility of bathing in the hot springs of Puritama is an inviting option. The complex includes seven natural pools at temperatures near 33 C (91.4 F) located at the bottom of a canyon surrounded by vegetation. Known for centuries for their medicinal properties, its waters offer an ideal relaxing end to the trip. The tour starts in the village of Hanga Roa, the main town of Easter Island, in the first stop of the excursion you will arrive at what is undoubtedly one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the area: Rano Raraku, a volcanic crater with a lagoon in its interior and in whose vicinity you can find 396 moais. At 2 kilometers from this place is Ahu Tongariki, an impressive ceremonial platform 220 meters long. Here you can see 15 giant statues, each one of different shapes and sizes. Finally, you reach Ahu Akahanga, another ceremonial platform 18 meters long, but has not been restored. Then he returns to the village for lunch. In the afternoon, the route is resumed, advancing to Ahu Te Pito Kura, which contains the largest Moai on the island, 10 meters high and 90 tons. This archaeological site is also known as the navel of the world. Then continue the journey until you reach Anakena Beach. Legend has it that Hotu Matua, the first king of the island, landed on this beach and started one of the most amazing megalithic cultures that this world has known. At the end of the tour you will spend some time to rest and enjoy the white sand and crystal clear waters of Anakena. REGULAR HALF DAY TOUR TO AHU AKIVI Starting out from Hanga Roa and taking the highway leading to Anakena, the AhuHuri site is reached. It s one of the island s 25 ceremonial platforms and has a single Moai statue -restored in 1976 by Dr William Mulloy- the only one known in the island to have four hands. The visit continues to AhuAkivi, an archaeological site in the Roihi sector and the first that was scientifically restored in the 1960s. It consists of a ceremonial site, particularly interesting not only for its location (in the center of the island) but also for the legends about its seven Moai. Later is a stop at AhuVaiTek archaeological site, with a large concentration of caverns and holes that probably contained water resources for Rapa Nui s early inhabitants. The last site to be checked out is Puna Pau, located east of Hanga Roa village, in a small crater of red volcanic matter. End of tour and return to Hanga Roa.

5 REGULAR HALF DAY TOUR TO ORONGO CEREMONIAL CENTER The visit starts in Vinapu, then visits RanoKau, a 310 meter high volcano with a large crater of 1.6 kilometers in diameter and a fresh water lagoon of 11 meters deep. Next to the crater of this volcano is the ancient ceremonial city of Orongo, where you can find the largest concentration of petroglyphs. Next comes the Monument in honor of Hernando Magallanes, near Plaza Muñoz Gamero, featuring figures of Ona natives lying at its feet. The tour continues on to the Museo Regional Salesiano, hosting a magnificent exhibition on the aborigine peoples of the region, including the Yagan, Ona and Alacalufe. Lastly, visitors may visit the Museum of History of Magallanes, housed in the Braun Menendez Palace that features exhibitions on the region s contemporary history. Taking the road back to Puerto Natales, a second important visit is made, this time to the Mylodon Cave, a Natural Monument where the remains of a prehistoric animal were discovered.
