3 What s new in Manuel Antonio By Tim Dwyer Express Burrito has been our go-to spot for great burritos for the past two years. Luis and his team have moved the restaurant onto the main road, just south of the soccer field, beside the grocery store. They are serving a new delicious menu that includes appetizers, burritos, quesadillas, nachos and tacos from 11:00 am to midnight daily! Same great food, great service and delivery! Luis has also opened a traditional Costa Rican restaurant. Gallo Pinto prepares and serves typical Tico food such as casados, handmade tortillas, picadillos, olla de carne (typical beef soup) and of course, the ubiquitous gallo pinto served on wood cutting boards. Top it all off with café chorreado, the tico way of preparing coffee and a flan or arroz con leche dessert. Gallo Pinto is away from the noise and traffic of the main road in a very Costan Rica neighbourhood. It s only an eighth of a mile from the Villa Lirio entrance off of the main road in the old Express Burrito location. Peter s Food World, located beside Super Joseth in Manuel Antonio, offers a wide variety of fresh international delights. Originally from Germany, Peter opened this spot five months ago and has been continually improving and introducing great dishes to his clients. He makes his own bread and sausage. If you want schnitzel, or bratwurst or an incredible potato salad, this is the place! Coffee with homemade strudel? Delicious! He also makes a full line of vegan dishes and has many returning clients who comment on how great they taste. He is also happy to provide gluten free meals. Even if it s not on the menu, he s happy to make it for you. Peter s Food World is open from Thursday to Tuesday, 7 am to 8 pm (till 10 pm on Fri. and Sat) serving breakfast lunch and dinner. He offers a 10% discount on meals between 2 pm and 6 pm. Cambute Mangrove Tours is once again part of Gaytours team. Rubén and his staff provide half day boat or kayak tours of the unique ecosystem of shoreline protection that is the mangrove. Expect to see monkeys, turtles, snakes, caiman, tropical fish, stingrays and baby sharks. As you make your way through its numerous canals notice how the root system of the mangrove plants form structures that are reminiscent of the set of The Lord of the Rings. 7 Z: Two Locations for Twice the Gourmet Adventure By Tim Dwyer the go that are used in private events and parties in the Quepos and Dominical area, catering service and yacht fulfillment. Four years ago, Z Gastro Bar burst onto the Manuel Antonio Food scene. Their focus on quality plates and inventive cuisine has set a high bar and has maintained it along with exceptional service. Z Gastro Bar is the brainchild of Dean Paquette, from Canada, and his wife Tita, from Belgium, with the idea of bringing great food and great service to Manuel Antonio. With second phase of Marina Pez Vela in Quepos finished, Z was invited to move from Plaza Yara to the centre stage of the commercial center of the Marina where it has sated the palate of many a sailor as well as tourists and locals. For the past two years the clean lines, and relaxed atmosphere of this location make it an ideal spot for a relaxing breakfast, lunch or sumptuous dinner. Dean describes his food styling here as true Costa Rican adventure in gastronomy, taking cues from local meats, seasonal fruits and vegetables as well as the freshest seafood brought up from the ocean below. Never one to sit still Dean also runs two Food Trucks on While he loves his location at the Marina, his love of Manuel Antonio has drawn him back to the top of the mountain. After two months of intensive renovations, Z Poolside Bistro has recently opened beside Byblos Hotel. Here, alongside the pool and under the canopy of the jungle, Dean and his team have put together an homage to Frida Kahlo whose pivotal artistic style provided the inspiration. Bright colours, mixed with bamboo and LED lighting highlight local woods and reimagined materials. New change rooms, washrooms and a VIP area complete the scene at Z Poolside Bistro. 13 Tico PrideBy Tim Dwyer When I first visited Costa Rica twenty years ago there were two places where there was any semblance of gay life: San Jose, the capital, and Manuel Antonio. While there were many gay men and women living throughout the country, they lived a much more subdued lifestyle. And from looking at other Central American countries, Costa Rica was always much more open and accepting. In 2002 when I purchased property here I was pleased to be living in a country where I didn t have to hide in the closet again. Neighbours were open and accepting. If they had difficulties with my lifestyle, they kept it to themselves. Over the years the sense of LGBTI Pride in Costa Rica has grown. In 2004 there was the first organized festival in the Plaza de la Democracia, beside the Museo Nacional. The small gather was the seed that grew each year with more and more participation. I attended a Pride festival in 2007 in San Jose. There was no parade, just an organized gathering people at Plaza de la Democracia, beside the Muséo Nacional. There was stage with various performers and speakers as well as information booths around the park. There was plenty of media coverage which probably caused some of the community to stay away lest they be identified. (I appeared on Channel 7 News that night and for years after whenever they had a gay themed item, they ran the same footage, so I could understand their reluctance.) The festival moved a year later to Parque de la Paz, at the edge of the city centre because it was growing and more space was needed to accommodate the crowd. It wasn t just for the LGBTI community. Now Parents were coming in support of their children, as well as Ticos who supported rights for all people, regardless of their sexuality. In 2010 there was an unsanctioned march along the Paseo Colon in the centre of the city with about 100 participants weaving through cars with placards and rainbow flags, ending in the Central Park in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral (I m sure the bishop was really eager to join us!) In 2011 began an official parade: Marcha de la Diversidad (Diversity March) celebrating our PRIDE. A small beginning: only one float, about 100 people marching, and many supporters as well as curious onlookers along the route. The float was a stage that stopped several times along the route for a short show before moving on. The following year there were five floats and each year the Diversity of people, floats and performers has evolved into a huge celebration. Last year there were estimated to be 80,000 people (2% of the population of the whole country) attending the parade. There is much support. This year you can expect that the parade will continue to celebrate Pride in our Diversity. There is an expectation for even more participation of marchers and supporters. This year s parade will take place on July 1, 2018 at noon in San Jose, starting from Parque la Sabana and following Paseo Colón to Parque de las Garantias Sociales. In Manuel Antonio, two weeks later, we will celebrate our own brand of LGBTI Pride. This will be the second year of Gay Pride on the Beach. Join us at Noon on July 14 th, at the north end of Playa Espadilla (Playitas) for music, food and drinks and a march along the beach. Let s bring even more colour to the beach at Manuel Antonio.
