3 A Grito Pelado! Por Jose Chaves PRIDE Orgullo (que en inglés es Pride) en español tiene dos significados diferentes: 1. Exceso de valoración propia por el que uno se cree superior a los demás y 2. Sentimiento de satisfacción por un comportamiento bueno o por una obra bien hecha. El primero altamente peligroso y seriamente rechazado, es objeto de burlas y comentarios groseros. Este orgullo lo único que provoca es el aislamiento de la persona al punto de llegar a la soledad total. Muchas veces con vidas «exitosas» o «felices» pero con una soledad deplorable y triste. El segundo si es super positivo y debemos lucirlo con «pompa y platillos» dado que nos hace felices y satisfechos. Desde ser buen estudiante hasta ser buen hijo. Y claro el ser gay, lesbiana, bisexual o transexual es objeto de orgullo, porque nada malo o negativo está ligado a este comportamiento o estado de la persona. Por eso en muchos países, y el nuestro no es la excepción, se celebra la Fiesta del Orgullo LGBT (GAY PRIDE): porque estamos orgullosos de ser lo que somos y no diferentes a todos los demás. Somos hijos madres tíos primas trabajadores asalariados dueñas administrativos doctoras presidentes y la lista es interminable. En nuestro país la «GAY PRIDE» se llama: Marcha de la Diversidad y como slogan tiene: Celebrando con Orgullo. Esta se realizará el Domingo 28 de junio sobre el Paseo Colón y la Avenida Segunda saliendo al Medio Día. Vamos!!! Celebremos juntos. Que los estereotipos salgan a la calle y demuestren que somos diversos, diferentes y coloridos, pero al final somos igual que cualquiera: somos gente. Desde Manuel Antonio y Quepos y desde los inicios de la celebración en Costa Rica llevamos una representación que cada año crece un poco más. Ya son más de diez años participando, al principio una concentración en algún parque y últimamente una marcha en las principales calles de nuestro país. 4 The New Vela Bar By Don Willems then he has held a number of positions from receptionist to his current position as general manager. Welcome to Hotel Vela Bar, a unique Costa Rican hotel with bar and restaurant, located in the heart of Manuel Antonio Beach. All guests must be over age 12. During the low season, our guests receive discounted room fees between 20-30%. After the beach relax around their pool and enjoy their beautiful gardens which are frequently visited by monkeys, toucans, raccoons, deer and other wildlife. Hotel Vela Bar has a restaurant and bar with an authentic thatched roof. Cool off with a refreshing tropical drink or wine by the glass. 7 Who is Sarah? By Don Willems Sarah Yunker is a full time freelance photographer, who lives here in Manuel Antonio. Sarah was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She first came to Costa Rica in 1990, when she was just five years old, to visit with an uncle who lives here. Since her first visit, she had returned for many summer vacations. Over the years she has fell in love with the country and the people who live here. Sarah first became interested in photography when she was just 13 years old. Her inspiration has always been her grandfather, who did photography during World War II. Her mother gave her first camera which she used when she was young. After graduating from high school, Sarah went on to study at Columbia College for photography. She began working at an advertising photo studio, while she was attending college. In 2007, after being in the industry for 4 years, she earned her Bachelor s degree in photography from Columbia College. After college, Sarah worked one more year in advertising and in 2008 decided to make the move to Costa Rica. While spending time and photographing the beauty of Costa Rica, she would go back for large photo shoots in the United States to make ends meet. In 2009, Sarah met the love of her life in Manuel Antonio, and decided to live here permanently. She was married in To Sarah photography is not simply taking photos, it is a way to capture beautiful moments and to express her point of view. Sarah enjoys shooting a variety of subjects from nature, to weddings, to architecture and food. Her fine art education is expressed in all of her photos, however recently she has been attracted to nude and progressive photos that demonstrate her unique perspective. In addition to photography, Sarah enjoys cooking, and many outdoor activities such as exploring, hiking and surfing. She loves to socialize with friends and to meet new people. Sarah is proud to count many of her friends from the LGTB community, who she credits with opening her mind and giving her creative vision which she expresses in her photographic work. Although Sarah s home base is here in Manuel Antonio, she is available to travel to wherever her assignments take her. 13 Papi Pachas Guaro bar by Robbie Felix Papi Pachas was an idea inspired by neighbors in Londres, Costa Rica who later became my family here. They had a rancho by the Naranjo river where local tourism was practiced, tilapia fishing, horse and pony rides and food and lots of guaro. Local families gathered by the river to swim and enjoy family time. The food was the local specialties, chicharrones, tamales, carne asada, most served in single serving portions, for snacking, especially while enjoying a cold beer or a shot of guaro or whiskey. The same neighbors had a trapiche, a press to juice sugar cane, their family always an integral part of life in that pueblo. The idea was an inspiration to offer the most beautiful parts of Costa Rican tradition from the area here in Manuel Antonio. The rancho itself is basically a replica of the open air rancho where food was served, babies slept out of the sun and families reunited to share time, food and fun. It is nestled in the rainforest, open air, and surrounded by nature. Gentle ocean breezes cool it and the view is 40 miles of coastline on the central pacific ocean. Our goal is to share the most beautiful part of that genuine Costa Rican experience. Humble, hardworking country folks know how to live here in Costa Rica. We have many areas where it is common to live into the 100s, the grandfather that built the rancho in Londres is 99 years old, was still riding horses until he was 96. Warm, fun loving people, great simple food and a spirit of joy and acceptance for all people is the heart of Costa Rican culture. Almost all people in Costa Rica have their roots in a family farm like that one. That is where the real treasure of Costa Rica is, in the people. We wish to share that at Papi Pacha s, to save that culture, by raising money for schools, churches and cultural non-profit organizations, the goal is to recover and share the traditions, dance, stories, art and food of the people who are the heart of this beautiful country. Papi Pacha s is open from 5 until 10 pm every night except Monday. Happy hours are from 5 to 7, with a beautiful sunset view. During certain days we feature the stories of the history of Quepos as written by local authors, in English or Spanish. 17 Tips about Playita* * This is the name of one of the beaches in Manuel Antonio, which attracts a high concentration of gay people, from the area and visitors to Costa Rica. REMEMBER Don't bring valuables to the beach, you will not need them. If you do swim, or walk, ask someone you know to watch your things. DON'T FORGET Sunblock... Sunblock... Sunblock... The sun is much stronger than you think. PLEASE Take care about the tide, you can cross the rocks 2 hours before and/or 2 hours after the high tide (page 8), otherwise you may get hurt. Rocks are very dangerous in high tide period. YOU MUST Dress in a bathing suit. Nude bathing is restricted on the beaches. Police do patrol the beaches. BORED? Walk to the end of the beach and climb a bit to the end of the rocks and get a fantastic view of the coast, wear good shoes and have fun. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY... Don't get sand in your...ouch! Cosas sobre Playita* * Este es el nombre de una de las playas en Manuel Antonio que atrae una alta concentración de gays turistas y locales. RECUERDE No lleve cosas valiosas a la playa, no las necesita. Si vas a caminar o a nadar pídale a alguien que vigile tus cosas, es mejor prevenir que lamentar. NO OLVIDE Use suficiente bronceador: el sol es más fuerte de lo que usted piensa. POR FAVOR Préstele atención a la marea. Usted puede cruzar las rocas 2 horas antes y/o 2 horas después de la marea alta (pág. 8). Las rocas son muy peligrosas en marea alta y puede accidentarse fácilmente en este periodo. DEBE Usar traje de baño en todo momento. La policía esta controlando esto la playa. ESTÁ ABURRIDO??? Vaya camine por las rocas al final de la playa y verá qué linda que es la vista desde ahí.
