16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 Day 1 [28 March 2017]: Arrive Lima On arrival at Lima s Jorge Chavez International Airport you will be transferred to your hotel in the well-known coastal suburb of Miraflores. This transfer will be only with Spanish speaking driver. You will have a group meeting at 5pm with your tour leader. Accommodation: Antigua Miraflores Hotel (Standard room) or Day 2 [29 March 2017]: Lima (B, D) Founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, it was from Lima that all Spanish territories in South America were governed. Few cities at that time could rival Lima s power, wealth and opulence. However its glory days ended in 1746 when the city was virtually destroyed by an earthquake. Many of the colonial buildings were rebuilt and you will get a first-hand look at several of them on the tour. The striking Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas), flanked by some of the most important buildings in town such as the cathedral, the huge Government Palace and the Archbishop s Palace, constitutes the heart of the city. In the morning, you will visit the nearby San Francisco Monastery, with its catacombs containing some 70,000 human remains. Next we will visit the Central market where we will take a walking tour. The market has a huge variety of fresh produce on offer including fruits, vegetables and even Guinea pigs. You will have the opportunity to try some local Peruvian fruits and street food. Next we will visit China town which is close to the Market. The tour will finish in Lima main square, and then you will return to your hotel. Rest of the afternoon will be free. In your spare time you might enjoy wandering around Miraflores, visiting Parque del Am or (Love s Park) where you can enjoy a view across Lima s beaches, or catch a taxi to visit the Gold Museum or the Larco Museum, which is renowned for its

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 ancient pottery collection. Please remember that you must agree on a fare with the driver before catching a taxi, as the taxis here do not have meters. (Miraflores-Downtown approximately soles). You may also want to visit the impressive National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Peru, which is home to a wonderful collection of cultural exhibits tracing the history, arts and accomplishments of the people of Peru, ranging from the original inhabitants of the land through to the Inca Empire and the Spanish conquerors. There are a number of restaurants and cafes to choose from for dinner. Lima has some of the most superb cuisine in South America and is especially renowned for its exceptional seafood. During your time here, you may wish to try ceviche, Peru s national dish, which is raw fish marinated in lime juice and often served with hot peppers. This culinary delight is a must for all seafood lovers! Tonight you will go out for an included welcome group meal together. Accommodation: Antigua Miraflores Hotel (Standard room) or Day 3 [30 March 2017]: Lima (B) Today is a free day. Spend the day walking around the beachside district of Barranco where streets are lined with traditional casonas (colonial-style houses). Why not take the opportunity to visit local bars and try various pisco cocktails along the way? Accommodation: Antigua Miraflores Hotel 3* (Standard room) or

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 Day 4 [31 March 2017]: Amazon Jungle (B, L, D) In the morning, you will be transferred to the airport to take your flight to the amazon jungle, Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, the lodge staff will take us to their office in town where you ll leave most of your luggage in a safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack with just the necessary items for our next two nights in the jungle. This helps us keep the boats and cargo light. Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of lnfierno. The port is a communal business. Box Lunch is included on route. The forty five minutes boat ride from the Tambopata Port to Posada Amazonas will take us into the Community s Primary Forest Private Reserve. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and will brief you with important navigation and security tips. The first activity that you are going to do is the Canopy Tower; a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A banister staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From the top you will obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon, or mixed species canopy flocks land in the treetop next to you. Please keep in mind that you are seeing wild animals so what you see and experience will be unique to yourtrip. Dinner is included in the lodge. A daily presentation on the lnfierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member. Accommodation: Posada Amazonas Lodge (Classic room) or Day 5 [1 April 2017]: Amazon Jungle (B, L, D) In the morning, you will visit Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake; this place is thirty minutes by boat and forty five minutes hiking from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers. Otters are most active from dawn to 8 am or 9 am. Then you will head to Parrot Clay Lick; this clay lick is only a twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas. From a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as Mealy and Yellow-headed Amazon, Blue-headed Parrot and Dusky headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is active at dawn, during the late mornings and mid-afternoons. After these tours, you will

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 return to the lodge to enjoy of your lunch. By the afternoon, you will have an ethnobotanical tour; a twenty minute boat drive downriver leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Nape. The Centro Nape is a communal organization that produces medicines out of forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants. At night, after dinner you will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories. Accommodation: Posada Amazonas Lodge (Classic room) or Day 6 [2 April 2017]: Cusco (B) Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. In the morning (around 7:00 am) you will return to Puerto Maldonado by boat and then you will be transferred to the airport to take your flight to Cusco. Upon to your arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel. Rest of the morning will be free to relax and to acclimatize to the new altitude (3,450 meters above sea level). The city itself is the continent s oldest continuously inhabited city and was the home of the Incas for two centuries before the Spanish built their first capital here. Today Cusco is a fascinating combination of both cultures. Inca-built walls line the central streets and many of the elegant colonial buildings are built on or around Inca foundations. This is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend and is a perfect base for explorations into the Inca world or to enjoy a range of outdoor activities. In the afternoon, your leader will take you on a walking tour including a visit to the Coca Museum where you can learn more about this infamous plant which has been an essential part of life in the Andes for centuries. On the way you will see the Stone of Twelve Angles at the Inca Roca Palace, on Hatun Rumilloc Street. Then, you will visit the heart of the city, the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by colonial arcades and four churches. You will explore the San Pedro Market where you will find vegetables, meats, local cheeses (which you should certainly try), local chocolates, herbal medicines and many local handicrafts. It s a great place to purchase some souvenirs. The market is also a place where many locals go to eat mystery soups. Some may be just chicken; however, the most popular amongst the locals are usually the more unusual ones like frog soups or soups that contains nose to tail of various animals. Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (Standard room) or

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 Day 7 [3 April 2017]: Cusco (B) Today is a free day in Cusco. You could use your ticket called Boleto Turistico that was included on your city tour program. This boleto Turistico (Tourist Ticket) gives you entry to different places in Cusco. Some of these places are visited during your city tour. However on your free time in Cusco you will be able to use this Boleto Turistico to visit the rest of the museums, churches and sites. On the backside of the ticket you will find information about opening and closing times and some telephone numbers, etc. You will also find a map of the central parts of Cusco, and a little map that gives you a hint on where some places outside Cusco are located (Machu Picchu, Chinchero, Pisaq, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo etc). Also we recommend you visit the traditional and picturesque neighborhood of San Bias. To arrive to this place you have to take a short but increasingly steep walk from the Plaza de Armas. Here, you can find art studios, artisan workshops, many of the best bars and restaurants. It s a great area to wander around Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (Standard room) or Day 8 [4 April 2017]: Sacred Valley (B, L) Travel by private bus through the Sacred Valley, known as Wilcamayo by the Incas, the lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls. At the Sacred Valley you will visit the stone fortress of Sacsayhuaman where massive stone blocks that form the walls of this site give you an awesome picture of how highly developed Inca engineering was. Looking over the city from its hilltop position, the fortress is built out of massive stone blocks and is the ultimate example of the Inca s military strength. You will head to a community in the Valley to learn about local lifestyle and activities and if our visit coincides with market day you can spend time browsing the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos and maybe practicing some of the local language, Quechua. Typical lunch is included this day. By the afternoon, you will head to the town of Ollantaytambo that was built over an ancient Inca town, which is a magnificent example of Inca urban planning. This is one of the few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish. Ollantaytambo s archaeological site is located to the east of the Plaza de Armas. The upper terraces of this site offer great photo opportunities of the squared grid town below. Accommodation: Pakaritampu Hotel (Standard room) or

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 Day 9 [5 April 2017]: Aguas Calientes (B, D) By the morning, you will have some free time to wonder around this beautiful town of Ollantaytambo. Then, at midday you will walk to the train station located near the hotel. You will board the Expedition train towards Aguas Calientes, a modern little town close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The train ride to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful journeys that visitors can experience in our country. After passing the Sacred Valley of the Incas the train starts to descend gradually along the edge of the Urubamba River, till finally reach the cloud forest. After approximately 1 hour 45 minutes you will have arrived in Aguas Calientes town, where you will be to taken to your hotel. The remainder of the afternoon will be free. We recommend you discover this beautiful town, by visiting the open-air market, filled with displays of local Andean curios and clothing or relax at the thermal baths located at the end of the town. Dinner is included in a local restaurant. Accommodation: Casa Andina Classic Machu Picchu (Traditional room) or Day 10 [6 April 2017]: Machu Picchu - Cusco (B) At 5:30am this morning, take the bus back up the winding road to Machu Picchu. On your second visit to the ruins you ll have free time to explore and take any photos you may have missed yesterday. In the afternoon, the group will return by bus and train to Cuzco, where you ll spend the night. Accommodation: San Agustin Plaza Hotel (Standard room) or Day 11 [7 April 2017]: Cusco (B) Today will be free for you to continue exploring Cuzco. Accommodation: San Agustfn Plaza Hotel (Standard room) or Day 12 [8 April 2017]: Puno (B, L) Today, you will travel to Puna (10 hours bus journey). The service is provided in buses equipped purely for a touristic trip, looking for the best way to travel from Cusco to Puno. This is a unique experience; the first half of the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean mountains, which

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 tower over the deep valleys. It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicunas and alpacas can be seen. In this journey, you can enjoy different locations that hold magical charm and an ancestral history, such as: The Sistine Chapel of the Americas or the Andahuaylillas church, which was built during the 17th century; the archaeological site of Raqchi, also known as Temple of Wiracocha, the majestic La Raya pass (road limit between Cusco and Puna, with a beautiful view of the Chirnboya Glacier), and the fascinating Lithic Museum of the Pukara culture, where you can find pottery and sculptures representing zoomorphic figure. Lunch is included in a restaurant on route. Located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Puna is a melting pot of Aymara and Ouechuan Indian culture and traditional Andean customs are still strongly represented here. The town is known as the folklore capital of Peru and is famous for its traditional dances. Many festivals are celebrated here, so if you re lucky your visit might coincide with one of the colorful evening parades, when the streets fill with costumed dancers and musicians. The night of day 12 you will stay in a Puna hotel. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, sitting at 3,820 m above sea level. From the shoreline, the water stretches out almost as far as the eye can see, its expanses just waiting to be explored. Accommodation: Taypikala Lago Hotel (Standard room) or Day 13 [9 April 2017]: Lake Titicaca (B) Today you will visit Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. A full day tour by boat to the Uros and Taquile Island will show you the Andean culture. The lake contains numerous islands whose inhabitants continue to live as their ancestors have in custom and tradition. The Uros, an example of this; this people group lives on floating islands that they have artificially made entirely of totora reeds, and they navigate in their traditional boats also made out of totora reeds. The Uros on the islands have intermarried with the Aymara and no pure Uros exist. The people are friendly, but very poor, and consequently there are constant requests for money. Rather than giving the children money or sweets, we suggest that you buy their little reed boats or drawings from the children. Then, we continue to Taquile Island, located on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca 45 km offshore from the city of Puna. It will take a couple of hours to read the island so perhaps bring a book along or get ready to sit back and watch the world go past. The end destination is worth the trip. About 2,200 people live on the island. Taquile is known for their kindness of their resident, their ancestral skill in weaving, their pre-columbian constructions and lovely countryside. In this island you will find fine handwoven textiles and clothing, which are regarded as among the highest-quality handicrafts in Peru. By the afternoon, you will return to Puna also by boat. Accommodation: Taypikala Lago Hotel (Standard room) or

16 DAY SOLOS TOUR MARCH/APRIL 2017 Day 14 [10 April 2017]: La Paz (B) Today, you will travel to Desaguadero, where you ll cross the border into Bolivia. The first stop is the Peruvian migration office where you ll be asked to leave the bus and proceed through Peruvian migration. Then walk via a bridge to the Bolivian side, submit your passport at the Bolivian migration office and reboard the bus, which will continue to La Paz. About 30 minutes after crossing the border there s another stop where the army will again check your documents. Bolivia is one to two hours ahead of Peru. On your way to La Paz, you will stop at Tiahuanaco for a guided visit. Tiahuanaco archaeological site was where the Incas learned about building systems and agricultural practices. This was the base of a great civilization that began around 500 BC before mysteriously disappearing around 1200 AD. It is believed that the ceremonial complex date back to the 8th century AD and was once at the center of a powerful and selfsustaining empire based in the southern Central Andes. The sprawling ruins comprise of temples, courtyards, terraced pyramids, monolithic stone statues and gateways. The most famous structure is the Puerta Del Sol (Gateway of the Sun). From the ruins it is less than a two-hour drive to La Paz, where you ll spend the night. You will enjoy spectacular views of the city on your approach, due to its unique location in the middle of a vast volcanic crater that resembles a bowl. Accommodation: Rosario de Ia Paz Hotel (Standard room) or Day 15 [11 April 2017]: La Paz (B) At around 3,600 meters above sea level, La Paz feels like the top of the world. It s not far from it and vies with Tibet for the title of highest capital in the world. Although Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, La Paz is the center of commerce, finance and industry. Despite the abundance of colonial architecture, La Paz s indigenous roots run deep, and the atmosphere in the market-filled streets is both modern and traditional. This morning you will head out on an included half day city tour. You will visit Moon Valley known to the locals at Valley de Ia Luna, which is a maze of canyons and giant spires. Following this head back to La Paz and delve into the witches market, where witches in dark hats sell dried llama fetuses for good luck. Your tour will finish with a ride up the cable car to view the city from above. Accommodation: Rosario de Ia Paz Hotel (Standard room) or Day 16 [12 April 2017]: Depart (B) Trip ends this morning after breakfast in La Paz.
