4 1. VOLCANO MOMBACHO HIKE & CANOPY Reserva Natural Volcán Mombacho is located 11km from the colonial city of Granada. It is an extraordinary 5 crater volcano with a cloud forest that possesses a wide variety of flora and fauna with unique and endangered species, as well as impressive scenic views. Take the trail to the top and don t forget to ask your guide about the Mombacho Salamander, a species which can only be found at Mombacho. The tour leaves in Mombotour 4x4 pickup trucks with professional guides who will assist you in getting to know more about this unique place. You may choose between a variety of trails with varying levels of difficulty. After you ve hiked the trail you will begin the zip line. Before you start flying through the rainforest canopy, the guides will show you what to do and also explain more exciting tricks, such as the "Superman" and the "upside down". 5 2. OMETEPE ISLAND DAY TRIP Ometepe Island was formed by two volcanoes rising up from Lake Nicaragua, also know by the Spanish conquers as The fresh water ocean due to its size. Ometepe offers you a chance to step back in time and visit a jungle island paradise. You arrive on the island by ferry; make sure to have your camera ready for some beautiful shots of the volcanoes. There are two options for the full day tour. 1) El Ceibo Museum and Finca Magdalena This tour begins with a visit to El Ceibo Museum where you can explore the ancient history and ceramic artwork of the pre-colombian indigenous culture that lived on Ometepe Island. Then a visit to Chico Largo Natural Reserve followed by Lunch at Villa Paraiso and then it s off to a cooperative organic farm, Finca Magdalena, where you can either explore the ancient carvings of the indigenous culture or take a tour to learn about the organic coffee growing process. 2) Volcan Maderas and Cascada San Ramon This tour takes you to the top of the Volcan Maderas which rises 1394 km above sea level. The hike takes between 6 and 8 hours roundtrip. 6 3. GRANADA CITY TOUR & MASAYA VOLCANO Granada is the oldest city in Nicaragua and features many colorful colonial buildings. This town is full of history; during the colonial era Granada was attacked several times by pirates including the famous Blackbeard. There is plenty to do and see, from getting a horse carriage ride and touring the city over cobble stone streets, to visiting the historic buildings and churches, going to the cigar factory, or making your own chocolate at the Chocolate Museum. The Masaya Volcano National Park includes two volcanoes and 5 craters. The volcanoes have erupted several times throughout history, and were feared by both the indigenous people and Spanish conquerors. The Spanish baptized the volcano La boca del Infierno or The mouth of hell. They planted a cross La Cruz de Bobadilla on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil. Visitors can peek over the edge of the volcano and look into the impressive crater, which is continuously emitting smoke and sulfur gases. GRANADA CITY TOUR & LAS ISLETAS Granada is the oldest city in Nicaragua, and one of the oldest in all of Central America, and features many large colonial buildings with classic Spanish architecture. This town is full of history! During colonial times, Granada was attacked several times by pirates, including the famous Blackbeard. The city was once also the capital of Nicaragua. During your visit you will see some of the oldest buildings in the region, including the The San Francisco and La Merced Churches. You will be able to taste the famous vigorón a typical dish from Granada that includes yucca, cabbage salad, and pork wrapped in a banana leaf. From there you will tour Las Isletas in Lake Nicaragua. When Mombacho Volcano erupted thousands of years ago, it threw huge rocks into the Lake Nicaragua. As a result, 365 islands were formed. You will tour the islands by boat and appreciate the immensity of Lake Nicaragua, and its wildlife. Here we will appreciate the view of the lake, the city of Granada and Lake Nicaragua. 9 6. MASAYA VOLCANO NIGHT TOUR The Masaya Volcano National Park includes two volcanoes and 5 craters. The volcanoes have erupted several times throughout history, and were feared by both the indigenous people and Spanish conquerors. The Spanish named the volcano La Boca del Infierno or The Mouth of Hell. They planted a cross La Cruz de Bobadilla on the crater lip in the 16th century in order to exorcise the Devil. We will begin the nocturnal tour with a visit to La Cruz de Bobadilla, departing right before sunset. You will be able to see the Green Parakeets, which is a bird that has adapted to the sulfur smoke of the volcano and returns to its nest at nighttime. Also you might be able to witness a large number of bats leaving their caves at night. Equipped with flashlight and helmet you will navigate through an underground tunnel, which was formed by lava streams. This leads to the actual crater mouth, where, depending on the visibility, you may be able to see the red glowing lava. 10 7. CANOPY OF SAN JUAN DEL SUR The longest canopy tour in Nicaragua is located only five minutes from the popular beach town San Juan del Sur. The Flying Frog Canopy Tour offers 2.5 kilometers of zip line in a rural setting where nature prevails. The canopy tour is located on the border of a farm at the foot of a hill. Nature is abundant in the area, and you can see animals including monkeys, raccoons, birds, lizards, and other animals. The canopy tour starts at the top of one of the hills, from where you have a superb view of the bay in San Juan del Sur and its surroundings. For a single person, it takes about 45 minutes to complete the whole canopy tour. SAN JUAN DEL SUR & LA FLOR SEA TURTLE REFUGE This tour offers guests a unique opportunity to visit one of Nicaragua s most important wildlife sanctuaries, The La Flor Sea Turtle Refuge, located in San Juan del Sur. This is the primary Pacific Coast destination in Nicaragua for nesting sea turtles, due to its protected harbor and a crescent beach, open to the setting sun and protected by El Indio, The Indian, whose silhouetted face hides in the rocky cliffs on the North end of the bay. On this tour we enter the wildlife reserve to witness up to one thousand turtles coming to shore to lay around 100 eggs each. It is an overwhelming view available to a selected few for a brief moment of time. We depart from Aqua at 5:30pm and stop in San Juan del Sur for dinner at a seaside restaurant. Afterwards we continue on to an educational stop at a turtle museum where you will receive information about turtle conservation practices before we head off to the refuge. This natural wonder, rare and precious, only occurs late in the evening. 12 9. SAN JUAN DEL SUR BY BOAT San Juan del Sur is one of Nicaragua s most fun and fast growing beach towns, and best way to get there is by sea. For this tour you will be picked up by boat right here in Redondo Bay. On the way to San Juan you can see all kinds of ocean life, such as whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. You ll spend the day in San Juan getting an English language tour of the city and visiting the crafts market. In the afternoon, on the way back to Aqua you can stop at the beautiful Playa Blanca for snorkeling and to enjoy a relaxing swim. 13 10. RIVAS - SAN JORGE AND SAN JUAN DEL SUR TOUR In this tour, we drive to visit the nearby historical city of Rivas (City of Mangos). You will enjoy a tour of the city by pepano (three wheeled bicycle) seeing the major sights in downtown Rivas, such as the churches and the market. Following this we head to San Jorge Port to see Nicaragua s largest island, Ometepe, made up of two picture perfect volcanoes. Then it s off to San Juan del Sur to relax and enjoy some food and drinks at a seaside restaurant. NICARAGUAN FISHING EXPERIENCE Guests on this fishing trip will have a unique cultural window into the careful blend of adopted modern fishing equipment and techniques with traditional lore and knowledge. SPORT FISHING WITH CAPTAIN ROB Aqua Wellness Resort is pleased to offer a unique fishing experience: Fish with a crafty pirate raised on a boat in the Bahamas who learned his trade fishing the Caribbean sea off the Florida coast. Captain Rob has fished all over the Nicaraguan Pacific coast and has fished competitively for Yamaha in Florida. His boat is top notch, custom made here in Nicaragua to his specifications. It is a center console vessel, outboard motor, with a bimini top that accommodates 2 crew and up to six fisherfolk. LAS SALINAS HOT SPRINGS & DINNER TOUR This tour takes you by boat, cruising north up the coast past fantastic coastal rock formations and white sand beaches towards the town of Las Salinas, so named for its famous salt flats. We beach at the foot of Magnific Rock, where we will have a refreshing juice and explore the beach and rock shelves with unique geological features. Guests and guide will then be picked up by 4x4 and driven into a solar/salt water evaporation pond where sea salt is made. Your guide will explain the process and the light of the setting sun will provide unforgettable images as it reflects off the dozens of salt ponds. Afterwards we drive a short way to the town of Las Salinas where we will visit a natural hot water spring used for centuries by the local people of the area. 19 16. OMETEPE ORGANIC FARM TOUR Ometepe island has always been known for the rich volcanic soils that feed crops like: coffee, chocolate and bananas. In the last ten years the exchange of ideas, techniques and a passion for farming between local and expatriate organic farmers has created to a community of sustainable farms that dot the volcano. A pioneering farm that has led this development as been the non-profit research and educational farm, Finca Bona Fide, a US NGO. The tour begins with the journey to Ometepe. As you cross the island, your guide points out the sights and geological features. The tour van will climb the slopes of the Volcano Maderas, stopping at Finca Magdalena, a hacienda now over 100 years old that is now an organic coffee cooperative. Guests will tour the buildings, enjoy the views, walk through the woods and visit stone petroglyph carvings. Lunch at the 46 acre Finca Bona Fide farm is a short walk away. After lunch guests will tour the grounds, learn about the history of the farm, techniques practiced, community integration and efforts. You will walk through gardens, orchards and nurseries that nourish the land with tens of thousands of new trees growing around them. 20 17. AQUA SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS TOUR Aqua Wellness Resort would like to share our building and planning experience with our guests. Aqua has painstakingly planned and implemented our project, from the sustainably harvested woods that make up our villas to the edible and functional landscape that honors our beach and hillside. Our project has a lot of stories to tell, and we are delighted to offer guests the opportunity to tour the grounds, see how we build, with what materials, how we grow what we plant, some of what we eat and how it all fits together. 21 18. HORSEBACK RIDING TOUR You can enjoy one of the most precious experiences on the Pacific West Coast of Nicaragua by exploring the region by horseback. The tour will take you on two different paths where the abundant wildlife of Aqua will reveal itself: Howler monkeys, various species of birds, butterflies, and others, just keep your eyes peeled. 22 19. HIKE THE BIG FOOT (PIE DE GIGANTE) FORMATION The fishing community of Playa Gigante takes its name from the distinctive mountain point which separates it from Redonda Bay. Some people say that the point looks like the foot of a giant. Climbing the foot is a favorite activity for locals and visitors alike. The view from the top is spectacular, and sunset hikes can be amazing.
