1 JANUARY 2018 NEWSLETTER Happy New Years to all. We present exciting news about the 2018 IPS Biennial to be held in Colombia at the end of May and beginning of June this year. Let us know about your palm adventures! 2018 IPS Biennial Colombia May 26th June 2nd Dear members, Arbor Day in Hawaii Join the 2018 IPS Biennial in Colombia. This once-in-a-lifetime journey was developed by the renowned South American palm specialist (and IPS member) Dr. Rodrigo Bernal. The trip begins in Quindío, in the heart of the Andes Region. You will visit the home to the world s tallest palm tree: the towering Ceroxylon quindiuense, Colombia s national tree. The spectacular Valle de Cocora lies near the small mountain village of Salento, in Colombia s coffee region. This charming colonial town is immersed in vibrant color, culture and natural beauty. Buenaventura is the jumping-off point for exploring Uramba Bahia Malaga National Park, a palm-rich area of high biodiversity, with as many as 40 palm species native to Colombia. 5 Falling Leaves South Florida s environment is perfect for Roystonea regia and litigation. The former intersects with the latter when pedestrians are injured by falling leaves and initiate legal action against the owner of the palm. A Miami shopping center that wanted tropical landscaping but not the liability employs zip ties (also known as cable ties) to prevent Roystonea leaves from dropping onto unsuspecting shoppers. Long, nylon zip ties are bound around the green leaf sheaths. As leaves die, the leafy rachis is pruned away with a pole pruner, leaving only the dead sheath. Periodically, the ties are cut (they are not reusable), the dead sheaths are removed, and new zip ties are secured around the living sheaths. This is likely a costly procedure involving a bucket truck or some other kind of mechanical lift, but along the high-traffic sidewalk, the exa similar technique could be pense is a necessary one. employed anywhere falling leaves pose a hazard to passers-by or to delicate plants growing beneath the palm.
