Chile Chile, which hugs the southwestern edge of South America, might be described as the world's skinniest country. Stretching some 4,300 kms (2,700 miles) from north to south, it is on the average only 175 kms (110 miles) wide. Chile has a total land area of 748,800 square kms and a coastline of 6,435 kms. Its elevation ranges from sea level to 6,880 meters in the Andes. Native southamerican groups, many of them ruled by the Incas, dominated the region before the arrival of Spaniards. The Spanish conquest was led by Pedro de Valdivia, who foundesd Santiago on 1541, today's capital of Chile. The native population was sharply reduced by European diseases and intermarriage. Today, about 95% of the Chilean population is descendant of European race or is mixed race, with only about 3% of pure natives. Independence from Spain was achieved in 1818 after a 10-year struggle. Profile of Chile Number of inhabitants of Chile: Number of men: Number of women: Number of inhabitants of Stgo: Approximately 40% of the national population lives in Santiago. Annual growth rate: : 2, : 1,42 Catholicism is the dominant religion, with about 90% of adherence. The gross domestic product is about $10,000 U.S. per capita. Number of persons belonging to ethnic groups: , 87% of this group belong to the Mapuche ethnic group. Censo 2002, Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) Estimación para 2005, INE
Security In Chile the Carabineros de Chile (Chilean Police) wear a green uniform. They are characterized by being an honest and clean institution, so that bribery is not a usual practice. Incidentally, the crime rate is low, when compared to that of other large cities. Police Emergency Number: 133 Travelling to Chile Coming to Chile is relatively cheap, in spite of its remoteness. For example: A flight of Iberia Airlines, from Madrid to Santiago de Chile costs around 900. From Frankfurt to Santiago de Chile, via Lan Chile Airlines, the cost is between 800 to 2000, depending in the specific days. From Miami to Santiago de Chile, via Lan Chile or American Airlines, the cost is around U$800 Santiago History and Geography The stunning backdrop of the Andes Mountains in winter, would be a dramatic introduction to any capital city; this is Santiago. The location of Santiago as the capital is owed probably more to the natives, than to the Spanish conquerors (represented by Pedro de Valdivia). The city was founded in 1541 when the Spanish conquerors were able to subdue the local natives relatively easily. Principal points of reference are the main river Mapocho (that takes its name from the natives Mapuches ; meaning valley of people), running from the Andes Mountain to the sea and the Huelen hill, nowadays known as Cerro Santa Lucía (Santa Lucía Hill). Santiago was a Spanish colony until The city was built using the military model of the epoch which was the cuadra (square). We recommend watching the following video; Michael Palin travels to Santiago, Chile in South America - BBC Youtube.php?ID=/Es/South_America/C hile/santiago f you would like to see a map of Santiago in E nglish, please see the link below: h ttp:// php?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=santiago,+ chile&ie=utf8&z=12&iwloc=addr&om= 1&ll= , &source=embed

Wine Imagine a misty morning in Casablanca valley, cold but not so much, the sea it s only 40 km away. Suddenly mist dissipates and you can see the fields as a woman's curves, a lot of green, a lot of vintage, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and noirs Green fields are lost in a limitless horizon. Riding in your bike under the trees with the sunlight paints in a kaleidoscopic shadows on the road in front of you. Perhaps you get thirsty and may want to go to a winery to taste their wines and as you see your reflection in the full cup you may surprise yourself looking at a happy SPR attendant. Casablanca is a white and noirs world,...the whiteland; the redland is Colchagua Valley. Surrounding a Santa Cruz city there are a lot of wineries, a museum and a Chilean country style house. Imagine you are riding a nineteenth century chariot travelling cabernet sauvignon, carmenere, pinot and If you can see more bodypaint go to Among boldos, quillayes, hawthorns, eucalyptus, lingues and old oaks, typical Chilean animals are found: ducks, quails, ringdoves, foxes and chillas (Chilean foxes). If you go deep into Hacienda Los Lingues it is like being taken back in time. It is not only a typical big house of the Chilean countryside but it is a living testimony of the colonial times. Everything is kept out as in those days Trees decorate courtyards and parks. Many Chilean painters have designed wine labels and if you want to design one for yourself you can visit Our Nobel Prize poetry Pablo Neruda wrote many poems to honor wine, one of wich is the "Ode to Wine".
Ode To Wine Poetist Pablo Neruda (short version) Day-colored wine, night-colored wine, wine with purple feet or wine with topaz blood, wine, starry child of earth, wine, smooth as a golden sword, soft as lascivious velvet, wine, spiral-seashelled and full of wonder, amorous, marine; never has one goblet contained you, one song, one man, you are choral, gregarious, at the least, you must be shared. Wine stirs the spring, happiness bursts through the earth like a plant, walls crumble, and rocky cliffs, chasms close, as song is born. A jug of wine, and thou beside me in the wilderness, sang the ancient poet. Let the wine pitcher add to the kiss of love its own. Drink it, and remember in every drop of gold, in every topaz glass, in every purple ladle, that autumn labored to fill the vessel with wine; and in the ritual of his office, let the simple man remember to think of the soil and of his duty, to propagate the canticle of the wine.
Wine Tours As South America's undisputed winemaking king, Chile certainly knows a thing or two about the humble grape and the science of viticulture. Wine was actually an unexpected bounty for the Spanish Conquistadors in Chile who thought they would strike gold but instead found conditions ideal for winemaking. Rainy winters, warm dry summers, rich soils, and relative isolation provided by the Andes proved to be perfect for producing some of the best wine grapes in the world. Today Chilean wineries combine traditional methods with high tech advancements to impressive effect. Indulge your senses with a tour that combines vineyards, wine tasting and gourmet food with local Chilean culture and history. Take a fullday wine tour to visit Chile s top wine-growing valleys near Santiago. These tours typically involve visits and tastings at three wineries. Wine tours are available every day, all year. Reservations are required at least two days before your tour. Each tour is priced according to the wineries and restaurant to visit.
