2 National Trails System FY2014 Total LWCF Request: $2,840,000 Project Name Agency District # Tracts Acres Total Cost Cow Island and Cow Creek BLM MT $1,600,000 (in conjunction with Lewis and Clark NHT) Lolo Creek BLM ID $30,000 (in conjunction with Lewis and Clark NHT) Bloody Gulch, NPS MT $210,000 Big Hole National Battlefield Ietemlaykin State Heritage NPS OR $1,000,000 Site and Minam State Recreational Area Totals: $2,840,000 Prepared in collaboration by: The Nez Perce Trail Foundation (208) The Partnership for the National Trails System (608)
3 National Trails System FY2014 Bloody Gulch Big Hole National Battlefield, Montana Project Details LWCF Request: $210,000 Congressional District: MT-1 Representative Daines Acres: 390 Miles of Trail: Acquiring Agency: NPS Landscape Characteristics: This land is adjacent to the Big Hole National Battlefield and is the route the Nez Perce used during the Flight of 1877 to flee the Big Hole Battle. This property has known archeological sites associated with the battle and has important natural resources including the North Fork of the Big Hole River. Bloody Gulch was the escape route the Nez Perce used to flee the battlefield. The name Bloody Gulch comes from the many wounded and dying Nez Perce who were brought from the valley floor through the gulch to the bench that overlooks the battlefield. With the acquisition of this parcel, all areas of the Battle of the Big Hole will have been preserved. This tract is where the Nez Perce National Historic Trail exits the Big Hole National Battlefield and provides a critical connection for the trail en route to Idaho and Yellowstone National Park. Benefits of Protection: Elders who have ancestors who used the escape route are currently not allowed to visit this area. Acquisition of this tract will allow interpretation to occur on the exact sites of the August 9-10, 1877 battle between the Nez Perce people and U.S. Army. This acquisition would also assist in protection of the state listed arctic grayling fish. Threats to the Landscape: Destruction of natural and heritage resource, loss of public access, and loss of habitat for threatened and endangered species. Partner Contributions: Along the at the Big Hole National Battlefield near Wisdom, MT. US Forest Service photo, by Roger Peterson, USFS. Prepared in collaboration by: The Nez Perce Trail Foundation (208) The Partnership for the National Trails System (608)

5 National Trails System FY2014 Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site and Minam State Recreation Area Oregon Project Details LWCF Request: $1,000,000 Congressional District: OR-2, Representative Greg Walden Acres: 583 Acquiring Agency: NPS Wallowa Mountains and Wallowa Lake near Joseph, OR, near the beginning of the. US Forest Service photo by Roger Peterson. Landscape Characteristics: This is the site where the begins. This purchase would protect several archeological sites that are significant to the Nez Perce story including boundary markers placed by Young Joseph and his brother Ollokot, as directed by Old Joseph, that mark the boundaries of the Wallowa Band lands in the 1850s or 60s. These markers are placed on either side of the historic horse and wagon road. They are modeled after common survey markers of the time leading to the supposition that they copied those erected to mark the present boundaries of the state of Oregon some years previously. Young Joseph and his brother Ollokot participated in the 1877 Flight of the Nez Perce for which the is designated. Benefits of Protection: Acquisition of these tracts will preserve the two most important sites in Oregon on the and at the Nez Perce National Historic Park. These tracts also include access sites for the trail so that trail users can safely park to recreate on the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Currently, trail users must park on the shoulder of the State Highway to access the trail and the historic site. Threats to the Landscape: Destruction of natural and heritage resource, loss of public access, and residential development. Partner Contributions: The NPS would own an easement on the tracts, which will be owned in fee by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, thereby protecting these important sites without the burden of Federal ownership. Prepared in collaboration by: The Nez Perce Trail Foundation (208) The Partnership for the National Trails System (608)
