Chapter 1 : Mexico vacation travel destinations and lodging packages - Balderrama Hotels & Tours. The northwest and Copper Canyon Explore Find out more Books Features Divided from Baja California by the Sea of Cortez, Mexico's northwest mainland is something of a bizarre - and initially uninviting - introduction to the country, despite containing one of the region's most alluring natural attractions. And yet, during my brief stay, Batopilas was peaceful to the point of being comatose. Then there was a different type of scare, one that I chose: I ziplined at heights of up to nearly 1, feet over the Copper Canyon and tap-danced across two wobbly hanging bridges, albeit while wearing a helmet and being firmly attached to a steel cable that would prevent me from catapulting over the edge and into the depths below. The scenery was thrilling too: The cliffs of the 5,foot-deep Batopilas Canyon glowed red in the sun, sharp-edged mountain peaks repeated themselves in a visual bluish echo far into the distance, and a brown river that from above looked to be the width of a thread twisted its way across the canyon floor. During my one-night stay at the Copper Canyon, a gorge named for the entire range, a full white, button-size moon rose above cliffs darkening into silhouettes of themselves as a dying sun infused horizontal cloud strips with pink and orange blush. The Posada Barrancas Mirador hotel is literally built on the rim of the canyon. In the past, it was jammed with tourists, but I was one of only 17 guests on a night in early November. As I sat in a comfy leather chair sipping a local grain alcohol known as Sotol in front of a fireplace, I could fantasize that this was my own private lodge to which I had invited a few guests for a quiet evening. Now Americans stay away while Mexicans, who never had much interest in visiting the region, are starting to respond to a nationwide campaign urging citizens to explore their country, Varela said. To those who stay away out of fear, I would simply say: First of all, el Chepe the train is patrolled by heavily armed state police officers who are there to stop any potential robberies or assaults. You take one look at them and you know they mean business. Second, if you decide to take one of the hundreds of hiking trails or to camp in canyon sites far from the train tracks, hire a guide who knows the area. There are plenty of them and they are all looking for work. In the lovely colonial city of El Fuerte in the Pacific state of Sinaloa, a guide led me down the El Rio River in a small wooden boat he rowed himself while rattling off the names of myriad winged species â egrets, blue herons, hawks, cardinals, ospreys and cranes among them â that literally flock to this internationally known bird sanctuary. He tied the boat to a tree overhanging a riverbank and led me traipsing through bush and bramble until we reached hilltop boulders marked by petroglyphs, symbolic drawings of sun gods, plumed serpents, mystical coyotes and shamans believed to have been etched by the Nahautl Indians hundreds of years ago. For my zip line tour, I and a half-dozen others took transportation arranged by the Mirador hotel to a state-run park, where we were met and escorted by guides. In the town of Creel, The 3 Amigos tour company connected me with a guide descended from the Tarahumara Indians, who live in large numbers throughout the Copper Canyon. He took me to see giant stones sculpted by nature into whimsical shapes in the aptly named Valley of the Mushrooms and Frogs and Valley of the Monks. They arrived hours later than expected due to multiple punctured tires, but agreed the trip was amazing. As a woman traveling alone, however, I found the best way to explore the Copper Canyon was to jump on and off el Chepe and stay in hotels built specifically along the route for train travelers. Nearly every day of the journey, I met people from all over the world who agreed with me: This trip is worth taking. Page 1

Chapter 2 : Copper Canyon - Wikipedia One of the most architecturally rich towns in northwest Mexico, à lamos is a cultural oasis. Sheltered in the forested foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, its hushed cobblestone streets and imposing colonial buildings hint at a fascinating history, much of it to do with à lamos' role as Mexico's northernmost silver mining town. History[ edit ] The New Spanish arrived in the Copper Canyon area in the 17th century and encountered the indigenous locals throughout Chihuahua. For the New Spanish, America was a new land to explore for gold and silver and also to spread Christianity. During the 17th century, silver was discovered by the Hispanic in the land of the Tarahumara tribe. Some were enslaved for mining efforts. There were small uprisings by the Tarahumara, but to little avail. They eventually were forced off the more desirable lands and up into the canyon cliffs. This section does not cite any sources. January Learn how and when to remove this template message The alpine climate of the mountainous regions of Copper Canyon has moderate temperatures from October to November and March to April. The bottom of the canyons are humid and warm[ vague ] and remain that way throughout the year. During the warmest months, April through June, drought is a chronic problem with little rainfall until July when the rainy season begins. Flora and fauna[ edit ] The Sierra Tarahumara Occidental region contains numerous species of pine and oak trees. Cougars live in the remotest of regions and are rarely seen. After the summer rainy season these upper regions blossom with wildflowers until October. In the fall the forests become brilliant with color from Andean alder Alnus acuminata and poplar Populus spp. Brushwood and scrubby trees grow on the canyon slopes, which can accommodate the dry season. Huge fig Ficus spp. Threats to the ecosystem[ edit ] Due to increases in human population, there are many threats to the ecosystems of the Sierra Tarahumara Occidental region. The government funding to build a "tourist friendly" atmosphere poses threats to the environment and indigenous cultures. Roads have been built in the former isolated mountainous zones. Agriculture and grazing as well as the cutting of hardwoods and other trees for firewood has accelerated a soil erosion problem. Amapa Tabebuia chrysantha trees yield highly prized lumber for building and furniture making. Other trees are also cut and sold for their high-priced lumber. Over harvesting of the forests in the area has caused the extinction of the imperial woodpecker and Mexican wolf. Approximately, two percent of the original old-growth forest remains. The Mexican forestry department deemed these species of trees "legally protected," but enforcement is difficult. The government has taken measures to halt or slow down the cultivation of opium poppies and cannabis by spraying crops with herbicides, which threaten the populations of many different species. A large saturnid moth, Rothschildia cincta, are one of the species that are threatened by the spraying. Their cocoons are used by the native population for ceremonial purposes. Open-pit mining for copper, gold and other metals not only produces air pollution from smelters, but has been linked to the serious decline of the Tarahumara frog Rana tarahumarae. Every river system has been dammed causing fresh water shortages in nearby desert communities. An enormous dam is being constructed on the Rio Fuerte, which poses major environmental problems and may lead to massive losses of tropical forest and habitats. Conservation is underway, but remains informal and slow. Mexico has environmental laws, but suffers from lack of financial resources. Enforcement has been lax or non-existent. Agencies are actively trying to increase the protection for natural preserves. Their survival strategies have been to occupy areas that are too remote for city people, way off-the-beaten-path, to remain isolated and independent, so as to avoid losing their culture. Their diet is largely domestic agrarian, but does consist of meat from domesticated cows, chickens and goats, wild game, and freshwater fish. Living in the canyons, they travel great vertical distances, which they often do by running nonstop for hours. Tourism is a growing industry for Copper Canyon, but the acceptance of it is debated in the local communities. Some communities accept government funding for building roads, restaurants and lodging to make the area attractive for tourists. Their way of life is protected by the mountainous landscape. Tourism[ edit ] The road to Batopilas descends into Copper Canyon. There are many other ways to explore Copper Canyon such as hiking, biking, driving or horseback riding. The Chihuahua al Pacifico began in the late 19th century. The revolution, lack of Page 2

funding, and the overall difficulty of building a railroad over such terrain hindered its completion until The railroad comprises miles of rails with 39 bridges and 86 tunnels. The total trip takes approximately 15 hours and passes through towns, as well as the towering cliffs of the canyons. Along the railway, many Tarahumarans lay out their food, crafts and other wares for sale. The park is located in the municipalities of Batopilas, Bocoyna, Guachochi, and Urique. Cities and towns[ edit ] A hotel at Divisadero perches on the rim of Copper Canyon. The railroad runs nearby. Among the villages located in or on the Copper Canyon are: Batopilas, elevation m, a town on the Batopilas River at the bottom of a canyon; first established by the Spanish around to mine silver. Divisadero, a key train stop and vista point with amazing views down into the Urique Canyon of the Barranca del Cobre. The ChePe train allows a minute stop for visitors to enjoy the view. This high mesa is home to three tourist class hotels strategically located on the canyon rim, and several low budget guesthouses offering basic accommodations with meals included. The ChePe train traverses the valley 3 times including a mile long tunnel to gain elevation. Located on the Rio Septentrion, lower Temoris is at m. Urique, m. Located at the bottom of the canyon rim below Bahuichivo, on the Urique River. Copper Canyon was also a destination in Motorcycle Mania 3, a feature that aired on the Discovery Channel. Page 3

Check out our Special Promotions. Tucson, Arizona - where the tour begins Our tour began in Tucson, Arizona. Most members of the group arrived during the day, so our first meeting with fellow group members was at a meeting prior to our welcome dinner. We also met our Tour Director Randy Cowger. He stayed with us throughout the ten day tour and made sure that everything went according to schedule. He also provided us with lots of interesting information along the way. There were about thirty people in our group. In a short time you become friends with everyone. Sea of Cortez from boat near San Carlos. It is highly rated as an example of mission architecture. The drive all that day was through desert. That evening we arrived at San Carlos, where we would spend two nights in the luxury beachfront Hotel Plaza San Carlos. The next morning we were taken to an overlook for nice views of the Sea of Cortez also called Gulf of California. From there we went to see some very tall and attractive cacti. We also had an opportunity to shop for some very fine ironwood carvings. In the late afternoon we went on a restful sunset cruise in the Sea of Cortez. Courtyard of pleasant hotel in El Fuerte. Folkloric dancer in El Fuerte. The Spaniards were the first white men to explore Sinaloa. They were in search of gold and other riches. When they arrived in they found many indigenous Indian tribes. Some of them were of the same race as the Aztecs. The Spaniards founded the city of El Fuerte in While there we stayed at the Hotel Posada del Hidalgo, which is a very pleasant hotel with pleasing courtyards and attractive vegetation. Prior to dinner talented folkloric dancers entertained us. It was a very comfortable ride as we passed through numerous tunnels and over many bridges. It was fascinating to watch the vegetation and topography change as we climbed from about feet meters to an elevation of about one-mile 1. In the beginning you see cacti, but at the higher elevations there are pine trees. Train entering one of many tunnels on way to Copper Canyon. View of track and mountains from train. A charming mountain village near Urique Canyon Upon arrival in Buahuichivo our adventure continued as we transferred to a school bus that was fitted with adult-size seats. In this remote mountainous area we went to the village of Cerocahui, which is located in a high fertile river valley. Apple orchards and vineyards are found in this part of the Sierra Madre Mountains. It was very impressive. Looking down 6, feet 1. We spent the night in the charming Hotel Mission in Cerocahui, which is located next to a year old Jesuit Mission. In our hotel room was a wood-burning stove, which we needed to warm the room. In the morning of Day 6 we toured the Mission School and the Mission Church, which was founded in We also had a nice walk through the village. After that we continued our journey by train to the Posada Barrancas at an elevation of about 7, feet 2. Upon arrival we were taken to the Hotel Barrancas Mirador, where we would spend two nights. Hotel on edge of Copper Canyon. View of Canyon from dining room of hotel at left. The hotel is built right on the edge of the canyon near its highest point. The balcony of our room faced the canyon. In addition, from the dining room you look out over the canyon to see this incredible work of nature. The Copper Canyon is really a system of major and minor canyons collectively referred to as the Copper Canyon. However, one of the major canyons is also called the Copper Canyon. From our hotel balcony we could see three of the individual canyons come together: Urique, Copper, and Tararecua. The system of canyons is four times larger than the famous Grand Canyon of Arizona. These canyons were all created through erosion caused by the flow of rivers over millions of years. In the case of the Copper Canyon the flowing water carved through hard igneous rock. By contrast, the Grand Canyon was carved through many layers of sedimentary rock. Entertainment during Hotel Happy Hour. Copper Canyon bathed by morning rays as viewed from balcony of hotel room. While at the Mirador we did a number of interesting and fun things. We walked mountain trails that revealed more views of the canyon. We were also driven to overlooks of the canyon for yet more spectacular views. Each day we enjoyed Happy Hour, which had lively entertainment. Page 4

They migrated to Mexico hundreds of years ago. They have been left pretty much undisturbed, and they are considered to be the most primitive Indian tribe in all of North America. We had an opportunity to see Tarahumara Indians perform tribal dances and run foot races. They are known for long distance running. These Indians weave very attractive baskets and do wood carvings, and many of us bought some of their handicrafts. View of Copper Canyon from Overlook. Note Tour Guide Juan on edge of cliff. Tarahumara Indian selling baskets. Along the way we stopped for a short time in the town of Creel to shop and walk around. Then we proceeded to the Mennonite settlement of Cuahtemoc for lunch. The Mennonites immigrated to Mexico from Germany in the s. They continue to speak German and run their own schools. We visited an elementary school. The next day we visited the home of Pancho Villa. He gained fame as a revolutionary leader. We also visited the Chihuahua State capitol building. The main reason to visit the capitol is to see a very fine set of murals painted by Aaron Mora, which trace the often violent history of Mexico from the arrival of the Spaniards to the Mexican Revolution. After a visit to the Cathedral we were on our way to El Paso, Texas. There we had our last dinner of the tour together. The next morning, on Day 10, it was time for good byes. The escorted tour advantage Escorted tours are very nice because you just lean back, relax, and enjoy the sights while someone else does all of the driving. Tour Director, Randy Cowger, scheduled the sightseeing, entertainment, meals, and provided us with interesting information about each place that we visited. He also saw to every detail including checking us into each hotel and making sure that our luggage was delivered to and returned from our rooms. While in Mexico our expert guide, Juan Leon, gave us in depth knowledge of the places and people that we visited in his country. It had been an incredible adventure. 6 Chapter 4 : THE 10 BEST Copper Canyon Hotel Deals (Nov ) - TripAdvisor About Copper Canyon. Barranca del Cobre, Copper Canyon, is a region in the desert of northwest Mexico that hosts some of the most spectacular and stunning natural scenery in Mexico's inland territory. Copper Canyon, Mexico 8-day Special Tour This exciting trip is similar to our 7-day Classic Tour but adds the adventure of traveling from Creel down to the village of Batopilas in the canyon bottom. In the morning we board the Copper Canyon train and travel up into the Sierra Madre Mountains, passing through 86 tunnels and crossing 37 bridges. This is one of the most spectacular train rides in the Western Hemisphere. After lunch we arrive at Divisadero and stay at a picturesque lodge located right on the edge of the canyon. Here we make our first contacts with the cave-dwelling Tarahumara Indians. Spend the afternoon hiking or relaxing, either way taking in the magnificent views. Optional aerial tram rides and zip-line adventures are available. After breakfast we hike to Tarahumara caves and spectacular canyon views. Usually our guides can make arrangements with the Indians to put on demonstrations of their famous foot races and folk dances. In the afternoon we board the train for the ride to Creel, a lumber town high in the Sierra Madre Mountains, where we spend the night. We travel from Creel to the little town of Batopilas. We pass through mountains and valleys, and after reaching the Tarahumara community of Kirare we head down the long, winding dirt road that leads to the bottom of the canyon. We spend the next two nights in a charming little Mexican hotel in this village that seems suspended in time somewhere in the nineteenth century. Today we return to Creel. En route we hike to Cusarare Falls and a cave with petroglyphs. Traveling to the city of Chihuahua, we stop at a Mennonite settlement for a homemade lunch, arriving in the afternoon at our deluxe hotel. This evening we enjoy our traditional farewell banquet. Today we transfer to the Chihuahua airport for your flight home, sad to leave but taking along wonderful memories of this remote area of Mexico and the unique people who make it their home. These trips are fully escorted by our experienced bilingual guides. The price includes transportation; accommodations: Page 6

Chapter 5 : The northwest and Copper Canyon - Rough Guides Rough Guides International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions. The bus will stop at the border for a brief baggage inspection. Tell the bus driver you need a tourist card. A tourist card is absolutely required to visit Mexico beyond the border zone. If the driver is impatient, he may leave you at the border. Be sure to keep your bus ticket handy. To do this, he will radio ahead, make the reservation, then issue you the ticket himself, at no additional cost. This can be very convenient; on my last trip I stepped off the cross-border bus and jumped right onto a departing Chihuahua-bound bus, without even entering the terminal. No wonder the trains are going broke As in Juarez, the Chihuahua terminal de autobuses is a huge, state-of-the-art bus facility with immaculate restrooms, baggage storage, telephone service, cafeteria and money exchange. There are several departures a day for. As a result, a huge area of canyons, mountains and highland forests is ignored by visitors who pass through the Copper Canyon in a matter of hours. Because information is limited, hiring a local guide can be a convenient shortcut to finding the most interesting places to visit. In addition to daytrips, guides can also provide transportation for longer excursions, arrange meals and find lodging and offer other valuable services in this rugged country. Ironically, tourists often encourage children and adults to beg by distributing treats, money and small novelties. This problem is just beginning to appear in the Copper Canyon, where begging is virtually unknown. Begging should not be confused with the Tarahumara custom of korima, politely sharing with those in need. Simply put, it is not the tradition among Mexicans or Tarahumara to give gifts to strangers. No matter how selfless the intention, unsolicited gifts of money, candy, pens, toys and clothing will quickly turn children into semi-professional beggars. The total quantity of gum, candy and junkfood I observed tourists shoveling into the hands of Tarahumara children outside the Cusarare Mission, day after day, was downright horrifying. Money, medicines, vitamins, blankets and basic school supplies are especially useful. Sleet and snow are not uncommon during the coldest months. The snow melts quickly, but most Mexico-bound travellers would much prefer to use sunscreen rather than gloves and hot water bottles. Rather than bypass the Copper Canyon in favor of Acapulco or Cancun, however, cold winter temperatures can be avoided with a simple trick: A few hours of travel to a lower elevation can mean differences of 30 degrees or more in temperature. As spring arrives and the canyon bottoms become warm-to-downright-hot, the Tarahumara and savvy tourists migrate upwards again, into the agreeably fresh and cool sierra. All in all, the best hiking and camping combination both high country and deep canyons is probably from mid-october through February or March. As a general rule, winter hikers and overnight campers should be prepared for both cold and occasional rain: For example, I use virtually the same clothing and gear here that I use at home in the Pacific Northwest. Considering the circumstances, she was lucky to get by with multiple scrapes and a painfully broken ankle. Of course, at the time of our conversation we were both wearing Tevas? After a long and very difficult cross-country rescue, Marsha was finally lashed to a homemade ladder and delivered back to the Lodge. Along the way, we had ample opportunity to continue our discussion of appropriate footwear. Loose rocks, scree and crumbly volcanic tuff are very common, as are slippery accumulations of pine needles and oak leaves. Get the best boots you can afford? Page 7

Chapter 6 : The Tarahumara of the Sierra Tarahumara / Copper Canyon, Mexico Copper Canyon Tourism: TripAdvisor has 5, reviews of Copper Canyon Hotels, Attractions, and Restaurants making it your best Copper Canyon resource. On a map the trek looks like a simple train trip between the Chihuahua, capital city of the state by the same name and the small city of Los Mochis in Sinaloa near the Sea of Cortez. The name, "Copper Canyon" is used as a general reference to the Canyons. A more proper name might be "Sierra Tarahumara", since the Copper Canyon Barranca del Cobre in Spanish is but one of six massive gorges in the area covering 64, sq. Also of note is the fact that copper was never mined in great quantities here. Furthermore, a main draw to the region is the rich indigenous Tarahumara culture. The journey is special on several fronts, not the least of which is the incredibly ingenious train route. The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad carries riders from sea level to over 2, meters 8, feet when traveling west from the agricultural city of Los Mochis, through coastal plains, up and over the Sierra Madre mountain range before descending to the city of Chihuahua kms miles away. The Sierra Tarahumara is in fact a maze of gorges which combine to form a series of six massive, interconnected canyons, or barrancas. This canyon system is four times larger than the Grand Canyon in the United States. Four of its six canyons are deeper than the Grand - some by over 1, feet. An incredible variety of ecosystems further distinguish the region. Highlands are home to snow-covered mountain peaks, sparkling lakes, and enormous stands of old-growth Poderosa pine and oak. Semi-arid coastal plains to the west support large sugar cane and rich vegetable farms, while valleys to the eastern Chihuahua region are home to peach and apple orchards and vast grasslands. Wildlife is equally varied. These semi-nomadic people number around 50,, many are predominately cliff and cave dwellers eking out a meager substance from simple farming, ranching, and handicrafts. Men are noted for their remarkable running ability, competing in grueling races that stretch non-stop for over miles at times. Visitors can choose two ways to spend their time in the Copper Canyon region. Most visitors stick to the rail route, making stops along the way for day hikes around the canyon rim. The second option involves venturing into the canyons. This option requires more planning, stamina, and an adventurous spirit. Spring also offers a pleasant climate throughout the canyons. The directory covers the canyon region of the Sierra Tarahumara Copper Canyon of northwest Mexico, and the railroad line to the Sea of Cortez as listed below: Includes many small towns such as Batopilas, Unrique, and the supply center of the region, Creel. Historical haciendas are available for lodging. Los Mochis is also close to the mainland ferry terminus from Baja California, Topolobampo. Page 8

Chapter 7 : Experience Copper Canyon Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barrancas del Cobre) is a group of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico. The spectacular Copper Canyon train ride through the Sierra Madre and over the Continental Divide has proved to be one of the biggest tourism draws in northern Mexico. Visitors not only enjoy magnificent views but can stop along the way at several rustic hotels to experience outdoor adventures and, perhaps, be among the reserved Tarahumara Indians. The canyons were formed 35 million years ago, and they get their name not from copper deposits, but the color of the formations. On the way, it runs through Urique Canyon, the main formation of the six canyons. The mile route has 39 bridges and 86 tunnels. Visitors who do not plan to make an overnight stop should consider traveling west to east since the best scenery is located on the western end of the ride. The first-class train takes about 14 hours and makes seven stops, often arriving after sunset. A second-class train is cheaper and slower. Rest Stops There are several hotels along the route, and many visitors disembark to enjoy the spectacular views, outdoor activities and wildlife. The highest town on the train route is Creel, which sits at 7, above sea level. A popular watering hole is Recowata Hot Springs where the water temperature is degrees. The springs are located in Tararecua Canyon, 14 miles from Creel. The train also stops at the Continental Divide, or the Divisadero, almost midway along the Sierra Madre mountain route. Natural Wonders Piedra Volada is the tallest waterfall in Mexico and the 11th tallest in the world at 1, feet. They can be reached only on foot and flow at full strength during the summer rainy season. Tour operators offer helicopter or horseback rides to view Piedra Volada and other spectacular falls and remote formations within the park. People of the Canyon The Tarahumara, known for their long distance running ability at high altitudes, are a sometimes reclusive tribe. At train stations, Tarahumara women sometimes sell craftsâ small pine needle baskets and carved wooden spoons. In the foothills around the eastern entrance to the canyon are acres of apple orchards and dairy farms tended by Mennonite families who emigrated from Canada in The farmers still speak an old German dialect and sell their rustic furniture and famed cheese in local stores and markets. Planning a Visit Many visitors opt for a packaged tour of the Copper Canyon, but it is possible to design an individual trip by making train and hotel reservations online or by phone. There also is bus service to Chihuahua City from Mexican cities and border towns. Page 9

Chapter 8 : Copper Canyon Best of Copper Canyon Tourism - TripAdvisor The Copper Canyon Train Map shows the route of the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad (Chp). The Chp is a major rail line in northwest Mexico, linking the city of Chihuahua, to the town of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, near the Pacific coast. The actual name Tarahumara was what the first Spanish called these Native American people. Only the Jesuit missionaries followed at first and with only scattered success. Today the Tarahumara live in caves, under cliffs and in small wood and stone cabins in remote areas. They live a simple life undisturbed by modern technologies. They are known as a quiet and considerate people who are expert farmers and runners. Due to severe drought in northern Mexico, the Tarahumara have suffered famine in the past few years. Copper Canyon Corn is the main staple along with beans. Potatoes, and apples can also be found. Some Tarahumara raise domesticated animals such as goats and cattle. Traditional clothing for the Tarahumara consists of a white cloth shirt, sometimes with colorful prints, white cloth pants or wraparounds with colorful belts or accessories. Headbands of cloth usually red are worn upon the head. Sandals or huaraches are the footwear of choice. Running is what the Tarahumara may be most legendary for in the world. Relief and various organizations have entered Tarahumara runners into events such as the "Leadville Mile" in Colorado. The runners have surprised many by running in their tire-soled sandals and winning some of the these long distance races. Running or "foot throwing" has always been a tradition and necessity of the Tarahumara. It is their only mode of transportation and many of the small communities are far apart. They also have their own events, and this is were "foot throwing" comes into effect. The races can last days. The Tarahumara are very religious and desire their privacy and respect if you should happen unto their festivals. These religious rites are a mixture of Christian and Tarahumara beliefs. It is an alcoholic beverage made of corn and grasses that is good only for a couple of days after it is brewed. Natives will drink until passed out in some cases. The Mexican Government recommends asking for permission when taking photos, entering accommodations or crossing Tarahumara land. Respect all celebrations as well as rights to privacy by these proud, but quiet people. For more information on the Tarahumara and the Copper Canyon region they inhabit also see. Page 10

Chapter 9 : Copper Canyon Tourism Best of Copper Canyon - TripAdvisor 9 Days from $ Mexico's Copper Canyon Roundtrip Train Dear Vacation Traveler, Welcome to a great vacation at an affordable price. Your Copper Canyon tour is all inclusive with all meals in Latin America, all activities, all hotels, a great itinerary, all airport transfers, all transportation and excursions. Makes far fewer stops and offers reclining seats in recently renovated, pristine carriages with clean washrooms and toilets, a restaurant, and a club car. First class tickets can be booked up to 30 days in advance. Leaves two hours later than the First Class train, is often delayed and makes more stops. Two trains, one at each end, begin their journey at the same time each morning: They meet in the middle, usually at the stop known as El Divisadero the Divider, although there is also a crossover point at San Rafael and your train may wait there for the other one to pass. Most stops are quite briefâ less than 5 minutes. The wait is longestâ about minutesâ at Divisadero, allowing passengers to get off and look down into the deep Copper Canyon itself from a viewing platform situated there. It is far better to start the train journey from Los Mochis or, better, the next stop at the Pacific end of the line: El Fuerte, and travel eastbound towards Chihuahua City, instead of the other way around. El Fuerte vs Los Mochis The eastbound train begins its journey at 6 a. There are three logical choices: Los Mochis to Chihuahua City eastbound; recommended route Chihuahua City to Los Mochis westbound Alight half-way and return your original start point Most of the dramatic scenery of the canyon is situated between Los Mochis and Creel. We do not recommend this. See note above in red text about the importance of starting in Los Mochis or El Fuerte. If subsequent travels from Los Mochis include going to Baja California, in addition to regional flights there is a regular ferry service now upgraded to a faster Catamaran from Topolobampo near Los Mochis to La Paz, which gets you to the Baja California peninsula. Flight Options to Reach Copper Canyon Most stops only last a few minutesâ not enough time to get off and wander around, except for the one at El Divisadero, where the train stops for minutes. All stations have ambulant vendors, often Tarahumara indians selling their fine handicrafts. Buying Your Tickets We highly recommend consulting one of the many tour operators in the Copper Canyon region for purchasing your first-class tickets. Not only will the tour operators procure your tickets, but they can also arrange a complete tour package, including meals and lodging. There are ticket windows at the Los Mochis or Chihuahua City train stations, but they should be used only if you wish to purchase an Economy ticket, which can only be bought on the date of travel from the station one hour prior to departure. First Class tickets, if any are available, may also be bought this way. If you plan to make a stopover see Making Stopovers, below then your seat First Class will only be guaranteed for the first leg of your journey. When you re-board the train, you will need to take pot-luck on seating. You must specify what dates and times you intend to travel, and you will be issued with tickets accordingly. First Class tickets may be bought up to 30 days in advance from tour agents, via telephone or on the Internet. Making Stop-overs Lots of people like to spend a few daysâ some up to 10 daysâ exploring the Copper Canyon region, by riding the train through it, and stopping off at various points en route, taking up lodging for the night and spending the next day or two exploring the land before boarding the train to the next stop. If you see something you like, you can stop to absorb it, instead of watching it disappear into the distance! Local activities include horseback riding, helicopter trips, and canyon hikes. An agency can discuss the options with you and make arrangements according to your preferences and budget. Most tour operators make use of the train coupled with detailed trips into the canyon and using a tour operator is the best way to get the most out of your journey to the Copper Canyon. See Guided Tours, below. It is an important industrial port on the Pacific. Some people use Los Mochis as a stop-over point and enjoy some of the tastiest seafood available anywhere in Mexico during their stay. However, the best option is to fly to Los Mochis and get a transfer from the airport to El Fuerte, a beautiful colonial setting just inland from Los Mochis. The view is well worth the climb. El Fuerte was founded by Francisco de Ibarra, a Spanish conqueror back in The town was an important center in colonial times, and for some years it was the capital city of Sinaloa state. The train from El Fuerte departs at approximately 8: Most tour operators begin their itineraries from El Fuerte and arrange for their clients to be transferred from Los Mochis airport direct to El Fuerte, Page 11

by-passing Los Mochis terminal completely. Plan Your Mexico Trip Station: The place never existed before the train line was built. The hotels here offer spectacular views, and all of them arrange excursions into the canyons: Horseback rides that take you through stunning scenery, marvelous waterfalls and secluded areas of natural beauty. You can also arrange for excursions to Cerro Gallego, which surrenders spectacular views of Urique Canyon. Urique is an old silver mining town. Posada Barrancas and El Divisadero These two stations have been grouped together, as they are less than 2. If you are just taking the train ride and not stopping en route, then this is your only chance to get out and see a spectacular view of the Copper Canyon, as the train stops long enough to get off and see the scenery standing still. This stop leaves you about 7, feet 2, m above sea level, on par with Creelâ and for this reason, the views are breathtaking. The Tarahumara indians will be here selling their fine handicrafts, wood carvings, pine baskets and dollsâ and much more besides. Cash only, in Mexican pesos. A tour operator can advise you further on this location and make arrangements for transport and accommodation on your behalf. Creel With a population of less than 4,, Creel is a small town at a high elevation, at the heart of the Copper Canyon train journey. Enjoy Awesome Nature Tours Near Creel The town is worth a stop-over in order to be able to take advantage of the excursions available from here. They include a day trip to Cascada de Basaseachi waterfalls, claimed to be the tallest falls in North America; Recohuata Hot Springs Excursion; and Batopilasâ an old silver mining town about 87 miles km away from Creel, so an overnight stay will be required there. Many of these tours will be very long days and could involve hiking. Creel will afford you the opportunity to do a bit of shopping at some of the craft shops there, as well as to replenish your cash supply at the ATM in town. A tour operator can make arrangements for an excursion, transport and accommodation on your behalf. Its wealth is built on mining, livestock, timber and more recently, the modern assembly plants known as maquiladoras. The historical center has some handsome colonial architecture, wide roads and fine colonial buildings, and its cathedral, completed in, is admirable. Pancho Villa, the famous revolutionary, lived here; you can visit the house which is also a museum about the Mexican Revolution. Discover Chihuahua and connect to hotels and local services there using the Mexperience guide to Chihuahua City. Horse Riding Most of the hotels inside the Copper Canyon region can arrange for you to take a horse ride into parts of the canyon. Some of the hotels are actually ranches, and the horses are provided by the hotel itself. A tour operator can make arrangements for transport and accommodation on your behalf. Helicopter Rides and Adventure Tours Helicopter rides above the canyon wilderness are available from certain places. Los Mochis Airport is about 12 miles north of the city; ground transportation and taxis are available into town; most tour operators arrange for you to be picked up from here and transferred directly to El Fuerte. For detailed information about flights and flying, see the Mexperience guide to Air Travel in Mexico. A catamaran ferry service is available on some dates and routes which cuts down the journey time considerably. Ground transportation and taxis are available from the airport into the city center â which is about a minute journey. By Bus to Los Mochis â Los Mochis is not as well served by buses as Chihuahua City, but you can get there by bus and then either take a short cab ride or a local bus connection to the train depot which is on the outskirts of town. By Bus to Chihuahua â Chihuahua is very well served by buses from all major routes in northern Mexico as well as from Mexico City. For detailed information about bus transportation read the Mexperience guide to Bus Travel in Mexico. By Car â Highway 15, which runs along the coast connecting the US border, from Los Mochis and then all the way down to Guadalajara is a fast, well maintained toll road. Chihuahua is well served by good roads from all four compass points. Try to do your driving during daylight hours and where possible, stay on the toll roads to speed your journey. Taxi travel is very affordable in Mexico, in comparison to the USA, Canada and Europe, and so provides a viable means of public transportation in Mexico. Your hotel can arrange taxis for you; some post their rates on a board in the lobby; taxi hotel rates are usually higher than cabs you hail off the street. If you speak Spanish, you will have a distinct advantage in your negotiations with local taxi drivers. For detailed information, read the Mexperience guide to Taxi Travel in Mexico. The canyon region really is vast and the local knowledge that specialist tour operators have will ensure that the limited time you have available will be well programmed through a tried-and-tested itinerary and local guidance given by experienced tour guides. Read the Mexperience guide to Travel Insurance in Mexico for full details and links to specialist insurance Page 12

suppliers. Inside the Copper Canyon, access to the internet is scarce; some of the more expensive hotels located inside the canyon may offer internet services. Their specialized works include pine baskets, dolls, violins, rugs and blankets, flutes, drums, pottery and traditional clothing and wood carvings. Everything is unique and hand-made. Stock up with plenty of pesos in cash before you set out on your journey: Remember to take cash with you â in Mexican Pesos â as the local artisan traders will not have credit card facilities and prefer local currency. In the winter, some snow may fall in higher areas of the Canyons, although that does not impede tours and activities. This is the rainy season, but the rains will be monsoon-like: They cool down the hot days perfectly. May and June are generally dry months: Water shortages are common, the land is arid, dry, dusty, and less inspiring.
