Of the 33 temples in Eastern Japan dedicated to the Goddess Kannon, Asakusa Kannon is the only one in the capital. Visit this historic area which includes Nakamise-dori, the street leading to the temple where colourful souvenirs and large paper lanterns might catch your eye. We drive through Ginza, Tokyo s dazzling luxury shopping area before having lunch on the top floor of the Hotel Shiba Yayoi overlooking the colourful Hamarikyu Gardens. Hop aboard the Symphony, ready for a 50 minute cruise around Tokyo Bay and end the afternoon at Aqua City Odaiba, one of the main shopping areas of the Tokyo Waterfront City, and a drive by Rainbow Bridge for views over the bay and skyline.

11 NIJO CASTLE, KINKAKU-JI TEMPLE AND KYOTO IMPERIAL PALACE/ KITANO - TENMANGU SHRINE KYOTO MORNING TOUR Starts: 08:25 Duration: 4.5 hours See the main sights of two of Japan s ancient capitals all in one day! This tour takes you on a morning tour of world-famous Kyoto to experience one of Japan s most important historical and cultural centers. Nijo Castle is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historical castle was completed in 1626, which was built to provide lodging for Tokugawa Shogun and as a palladium for Kyoto Imperial Palace. Kinkaku-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site, also is known as the Golden Pavilion. The wooden architecture is covered in thin layers of pure gold and is surrounded by a beautiful lake. For the Kyoto Imperial Palace, visitors generally require application in advance, but participants of this tour can enter only by going through a brief procedure. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine main hall is a designated national treasure and is famous for housing the God of scholarship. The shrine is especially great to see during the plum blossom and autumn leaf seasons. Others: Public transportation will be used between Osaka and Kyoto. Seating may not be available. Kyoto Imperial Palace is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, National Holidays and New Year. During these dates, the tour will visit Kitano-tenmangu Shrine instead. The same applies to the period before and after the public viewing of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in April and October, May 14th to May 17th due to the Aoi Festival, as well as when there is an Imperial Household event. Nishi Honganji Temple will be visited on Jan 25th, Apr 25th, Jul 25th and Oct 25th instead of Kitano-tenmangu Shrine. Nijo Castle is closed on every Tuesday in January, July, August, December and the New Year. During these dates, the tour will visit Ryoanji Temple instead. Before entering Kyoto Imperial Palace, you must complete a form indicating full name, nationality, gender and age. After sightseeing, the bus will stop at the 1-Day Tour lunch location before going to Kyoto Station.

Next we walk through a nice local residential neighbourhood to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Walk through snaking corridors of red gates, made famous in the film Memoirs of Geisha, stopping to admire the shrines and many fox statues. Major photo opportunity alert! As the sun begins to set on the Toriis, we leave behind the foxes and head to Gion, famously known as Kyoto s Geisha district. This area was the model for Memoirs of Geisha, and it comes alive with people and lights in the evening. Stroll past the 17th-century traditional restaurants and teahouses, many of which are still exclusive establishments for Geisha entertainment, see the theatres and traditional shops, and soak up the atmosphere of this historic quarter. This iconic neighbourhood makes for the ideal end to this Kyoto city tour, and is sure to leave you completely enthralled with this dynamic city.

13 UJI WALKING TOUR AND TEA CEREMONY THE TALE OF GENJI Starts: 08:30 Duration: 4 hours One of the oldest cities in Japan, Uji is a historical gem famous for its green tea production. HIGHLIGHTS: * Experience an authentic tea ceremony * Walk over a bridge that has featured in literature and paintings * Admire one of few surviving temples from the Heian era Departing from Kyoto we travel by JR Special Rapid Service or Rapid Service to Uji, a city that holds an intriguing history and was the setting for the final chapters of The Tale of Genji. We firstly take you to admire Uji Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Japan which is thought to have originally been built in the 7th century. Absorb the arresting views of the mountains from the bridge and learn about how this city thrived on its location by the banks of Uji-gawa River. Stroll around Nakanoshima Park, built on a sandbar in the middle of the river and take a tea break to experience the ceremony at an authentic tea house, Taiho-an. Afterwards we make our way to the temple that puts Uji on the map: Byodo-in. The temple is a stunning example of Buddhist Pure Land (Jodo) architecture built near the end of the Heian era. It houses a Buddha statue and an image of the Phoenix Hall even features on the 10 yen coin. Enjoy a tour around the temple and its equally beautiful gardens before returning to Kyoto.

We then hop aboard the Santa Maria for a cruise along Osaka Bay.
