2 Day 1 Monday 17 July Venue: Ravello Art Center Introduction to Pastoral Welcome by convenors Dr Victoria Bladen and Prof Maddalena Pennacchia Ravello and the Divine Coast : an Introduction Maddalena Pennacchia coffee break The Idea of the Pastoral Victoria Bladen Classical pastoral Introduction to classical pastoral and Poetry reading of excerpts from Theocritus, Virgil, and Horace Victoria Bladen lunch break Medieval pastoral Politics and Pastoral in The Second Shepherd's Play - Prof Katie Goodland Play reading from The Second Shepherd s Play - Katie Goodland Creative writing session Introduction to Poetics Victoria Bladen and Lesley Synge Evening event: there will be a classical concert by the Hadimova String Quartet at the historical Annunziata Building (Via dell'annunziata, 6 bis Ravello). Tickets are available at a special price of 15 euros for all participants in the summer school. Time: pm Day 2 Tuesday 18 July Venue: Centro Universitario Europeo per i Beni Culturali Villa Rufolo Welcome of the Centro Universitario Europeo per i Beni Culturali and Consorzio di promozione turistica Ravello Sense and presentation of the Ravello Tales Literary Prize First edition, a writing and publishing opportunity that will be open to all participants in the summer school. 2

3 The Garden and Pastoral session Ideas about the Garden Victoria Bladen The Gardens of Ravello: a Short History - Maddalena Pennacchia Early Modern Pastoral and Engagements with Italy Thomas Middleton and Italy Dr Natalie Roulon Shakespeare s Love s Labour s Lost pastoral elements of the filmed Globe production Victoria Bladen Shakespearean Pastoral - play readings of Shakespearean pastoral (excerpts from Love s Labour s Lost and The Winter s Tale) - Maddalena Pennacchia lunch break Exploring Villa Rufolo - If anyone is interested in sketching, bring a small sketchbook and pen (a fine artliner is recommended). You may also wish to bring a notebook for writing. The afternoon will include a poetry reading of poems on gardens Victoria Bladen. Day 3 Wednesday 19 July Venue: Ravello Art Center Pastoral, Poetry and Landscape Country-house poetry: Aemilia Lanyer, Ben Jonson and Andrew Marvell Victoria Bladen The pastoral poetry of HD Bronte Anthony The Philosophy of Landscape Prof Maria Tosetto coffee break Creative Writing session Narrative and Location - Rosemary Kay The Garden and Pastoral session The Garden and Children s Literature - Lara Phillips Herbal Workshop Lara Phillips lunch break 3

4 Excursion to Villa Cimbrone. Meet at our lecture venue, the Ravello Art Center, after lunch and we will walk together to the garden. Those interested in sketching should bring a small sketchbook and pen. Also, bring a notebook for writing. There will also be playreadings of Shakespearean Pastoral (excerpts from As You Like It ) - Maddalena Pennacchia. Day 4 Thursday 20 July Optional Excursion: On Forster s Trail towards Fontana Carosa : Pasquale Palumbo (Consorzio Ravello Sense) and Maddalena Pennacchia will lead a guided walk in the footsteps of EM Forster the walk that inspired his first piece of writing, The Story of a Panic. Wear trekking shoes and bring your pocket lunch. Moderate fitness required. Alternatively, you may prefer to spend the morning exploring Ravello or the nearby village of Scala (to be reached by bus in 10 minutes) and then join us for the afternoon session. Venue for afternoon session: Ravello Art Center Pastoral and the Short Story The Myth of the Mediterranean and the Modernist short story - EM Forster and DH Lawrence - Maddalena Pennacchia H.G. Wells and Capri in A Dream of Armageddon Dr Alessandra Ruggiero Nathaniel Hawthorne s Rappaccini s Daughter (1844): Ironizing Dante and Exoticizing Italy in the Poisonous Garden Prof Melissa Croteau [ ] Coffee break Contemporary Pastoral and Retreat Some kind of mental clearing : the concept of retreat in the life writing of Jay Parini - Dr Heather Neilson Retreat in Poetics - Lesley Synge Day 5 Friday 21 July Venue: Ravello Art Center Pastoral and film The Pastoral as a measure of morality in the films of Ridley Scott: Gladiator, Robin-Hood, Kingdom of Heaven, A Good Year and Bladerunner. - Maryline Kassab (paper to be read by Bronte Anthony) Pastoral in Picnic at Hanging Rock Victoria Bladen 4

5 Elizabeth von Arnim s Enchanted April on Film: Italian Nature Brings Brits Back to Life, or an Italian Renaissance Melissa Croteau Screening Oscar Wilde s Lady Windermere s Fan as a Pastoral Romance: A Good Woman in Ravello Maddalena Pennacchia 12: Creative Writing Lunch - There will be a special lunch event at the "Restaurant Raffaele - Hotel Parsifal", overlooking the Mediterranean sea, in a fascinating location which was, originally, a monastery built by the Hermits of St. Augustine in the XIIIth century ( ). The special price for the participants in the Summer School is 35 euros. The lunch will be an opportunity to share any reflections, poetry, diary entries or sketches from the week. This will give you plenty of ideas for the Ravello Tales Literary Prize competition organised by the Centro Universitario Europeo per i Beni Culturali. After lunch there will be free time to explore Ravello. Saturday 22 July Optional excursion: Excursion - From Ravello to Amalfi Pasquale Palumbo and Maddalena Pennacchia will lead a guided walk through the valle delle Ferriere (the route of the Mills for making paper and of the old ironworks) with a visit to the Duomo of Amalfi. Moderate fitness required. Alternatively, you may prefer to take the bus from Ravello to Amalfi and meet us there for lunch (details of how to do this will be provided; it takes about 30 mins; timetable available at: ) lunch in Amalfi After lunch in Amalfi, there is the option of a boat trip to see the coast and visit a pebbled beach for swimming (details and cost of boat to be provided closer to the time). Suggestion for the evening: there will be fireworks in the nearby village of Atrani for the celebration of Saint Mary Magdalen (Atrani is about a 15 minutes walk from Amalfi). We can have dinner and then return to Ravello (by bus or taxi). Sunday 23 July (Optional) mini bus back to Rome, leaving Ravello in the morning; arriving mid-afternoon (details of time and cost to be provided). 5
