3 TRANSDOLOMITI From the Nordkette to the Mediterranean, from Innsbruck to Venice our Transalp traverses the highest mountains in Europe in the shadow of the impressive peaks of the Dolomites. Where for centuries different powers wrestled in the rough terrain about their influence and left their mark, today it can be cycled in a very noble way against breathtaking mountain scenery. The sophisticated topography is naturally made for the use of our ebikes, and even in the channeled terra ferma, one will appreciate the built-in tailwind. Palladio s villas and the lagoon landscapes around Chioggia, island hopping over the Lido and Pellestrina in the Venetian part of the journey, there is an abundance of scenic and (art) historical sites that make this tour one of the most varied in our program. On the edge of the old town of Innsbruck, just three minutes from the train station, our guests are expected in the hotel Sailer. The traditional, family-run hotel has a small but fi ne spa area and is ideal for exploring the charming capital of North Tyrol on foot. The equivalent, more traditional furnished Wellness & Romantic Hotel Santer serves as accommodation on the journeys ITR3 and ITR4. 2nd day, Monday: Toblach Cortina d Ampezzo Pieve di Cadore Belluno, 62 km After a hearty breakfast, the morning stage leads straight into the Höllensteintal, topographically dividing the Dolomites of Sesto with the Nature Park Drei Zinnen in the east, from the Pragser Dolomites with the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park in the west, and linguistically speaking the German- and the Ladin-speaking region. In 2009, when the Dolomites, together with some other mountain ranges, were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide, the committee justified its decision with its unique monumental beauty. The more than 300 vertical meters on the Long Path of the Dolomites to the peak of the pass are a pure pleasure with the ebikes. It is hard to imagine that on today s cycle track, about 100 years ago, gas-powered military trains of the Habsburg monarchy transported artillery and Austrian-Hungarian cannon fodder to the Dolomite front. Although the trained eye is able to discover evidence of this warlike past everywhere, nowadays the imposing mountain landscape of the Dolomiti d Ampezzo is in the foreground. In 1990, a beautiful nature park was established and since then protects the diverse flora and fauna of the region. The numerous mountain ranges with world-famous names such as Cristallo, Three Tofane, Fanes Peak, Col Bechei and Croda Rossa d Ampezzo are home to alpine pastures, forests, springs, mountain lakes, deep gorges, spectacular waterfalls, via ferrata and beautiful hiking trails.cortina d Ampezzo (Ladin Anpëz or Anpezo), venue of the Olympic Winter Games 1956 and in the wild 70s, according to the magazine Die Zeit, something like St. Moritz, Kitzbühel and Megeve in one, has now lost some of its glamor. However, a coffee break in the footsteps of James Bond is always worthwhile. Via San Vito, the tour continues down the Cadore to reach Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of Titian, including two shorter ascents. The last less attractive cycling routes to Belluno are covered by bus. Just outside the pretty town, the Villa Carpenada, a tastefully restored 17th-century mansion, serves as a noble hostel. Diner will be in the hotel restaurant Lorenzo III, known for its local cuisine. 3rd day, Tuesday: Belluno Follina, 36 km The historic center of Belluno with its Italian piazza in front of the mountain backdrop in the morning light at its best. From there, we ride on side roads further south, always within sight of the Piave, which here shows itself in the last foothills of the Dolomites still as a largely untamed mountain stream. A last ridge is still to overcome before the stage ends with a fantastic descent into the famous wine-growing region of Prosecco. The exquisite sparkling wine has a long tradition here. Already in ancient times, wine from the region of today s Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia was appreciated. The name Prosecco itself dates back to the 18th century and originally referred to a high-quality wine that was grown in the vicinity of the village of Prosseck near Trieste. Its grape is one of the late-ripening varieties, which leads to a peculiarity in winemaking: The winters in the region are cold enough that the fermentation process is temporarily interrupted. For this, the wine in the secondary fermentation in spring contains a small amount of carbon dioxide. This naturally creates a pearling wine. If the weather plays along, this environment is of course ideal for a picnic. In Follina, a member of the borghi più belli d Italia (the most beautiful places in Italy) since 2017, a 12th-century Cistercian abbey proves that this area has long been blessed not only regarding the landscape. On a visit, one can immediately look at the traces of Berhard of Clairveaux on Italian soil: the late Romanesque cloister, with its rich columns and capitals, is considered one of the most beautiful in the country. Today, we are staying at the Hotel Dei Chiostri, which is in the immediate vicinity of the abbey. Dinner will be in the directly opposite restaurant La Corte. 4th day, Wednesday: Follina Cavasagra, 47 km The first part of today s cycle stage is bordered in every way by grapes: First, we ride on beautiful paths through the heart of the protected area Prosecco DOCG winegrowing area, past Valdobbiadene to the winery Villa Sandi. 5 world of wine for generations. After a guided tour of the well-preserved, in total two kilometers long wine cellar, depending on the weather, a picnic on the Piave is a highlight. Soon after crossing the ever-changing river bed of the Piave, which in some cases is completely dry during the summer, the landscape changes once again: the fertile, canyon-covered plain of the terra ferma, the former mainland areas of Venice. As from the 16th century, the maritime republic had to turn more and more to the land, created in the sequence magnificent estates. For those who could afford it, one of the most respected architects of his time, Andrea Palladio, was responsible for the construction of the buildings. The visit to one of his most famous buildings, the Villa Emo in Fanzolo, is scheduled for the afternoon. Today s destination is Cavasagra, where the Villa Cornér della Regina (swimming pool) converted into a noble hotel welcomes our guests. Dinner will be served at the hotel. 5th day, Thursday: Cavasagra Chioggia, 63 km The built-in tailwind of our ebikes makes the already very pleasant bicycling through the Veneto pure pleasure. Between fields and groups of trees, the view always falls on more or less well-preserved country seats of the 16th and 17th centuries. In Piombino, it is possible to visit another of Palladio s villas. The American couple Gable spent more than 20 years restoring the Villa Cornaro, an interesting mix of country house and city residence, planned as a purely representative building without agricultural utility. who stayed here only once. The Brenta Canal, which dates back to the 16th century, turns the original course of the river into a well-regulated waterway to Venice, while a new bed was dug for the mountain river, which until then could not be tamed into the lagoon. After a short transfer, the cycling day ends in Chiogga, the charming little sister of Venice at the southern end of the lagoon landscape. The best house on the square, the hotel Grande Italia, is located directly on the small harbor in the historic center (double over-night stay). Dinner is served in the excellent restaurant of the house. 6th day, Friday: Chioggia Venice Lido Pellestrina Chioggia, 20 km After a hearty breakfast with a view of the lagoon, a boat leaves directly in front of the hotel for Venice. The morning drive through the unique, in this part of the lagoon still largely unused marshes, is alone an experience and is crowned by the slowly dissolving silhouette of the Serenissima. Only very briefly the hustle and bustle of the masses of tourists rolling over the St. Mark s Square is touched, in order to switch to a Vaporetto, which brings the group on the Giudecca. The seventh district of Venice is far from the crowds in the center of the former maritime republic. Here you can take a guided tour away from the usual tourist routes, the charm of this extraordinary in every way city. Architectural highlight is the two Palladio churches Il Redentore and S. Giorgio Maggiore, where the origin of his fame as a master builder becomes apparent. The view from the bell tower of the monastery complex, which is directly opposite S. Marco, is breathtaking. With a bit of luck, the view extends over the lagoon to the peaks The route continues to the most magnificent example of Venetian villas, the Villa Pisani in Stra, also called La Nazionale. The sprawling Baroque buildings were bought in 1807 by Napoleon, of the Dolomites, which could be seen up close a few days ago. From there, a ferry takes you to Pellestrina, an island completely untouched by tourists, with picturesque fishing villages, where you can get a taste of the mussel farming, both culinary and optically, for which Pellestrina is praised. Back to Chiogga, there is another ferry crossing, past a part of the heavily contested, now somewhat stalled MOSE barrier, which in the near future will protect Venice from flooding with huge barriers anchored in the bottom of the lagoon. To conclude this ebike journey, which has been filled with impressions, the culinary diversity of this unique region between the Alps and the sea will once again be on the menu in a fish restaurant in the old town of Chioggia. 7th day, Saturday: Departure Depending on how the return journey was chosen, the pedelon bus leaves for Mestre train station after breakfast (direct connections back to Innsbruck or onwards to Germany) or to Venice airport.
