3 Fondazione Venezia SCALA DEL BOVOLO Palazzo Contarini Scala Contarini del Bovolo, litterally of the snail, is one of the finest example of the architecture of transition, from the traditionally venetian Gothic to a more Reinassance style. Connected to the adjacent palace through three loggias, the 28 meters high staircase culmiantes in a belvedere on the top. From there a beautiful and remarkable view. VG01 ORATORIO DEI CROCIFERI Oratorio dei Crociferi is a small decorated chapel which features a series of paintings realised by Jacopo Palma il Giovane during the 16th Century. Close to the Oratorio, visitors can see the 12th Century former hospital which originally hosted pilgrims and crusaders heading to the Holy Land. Far from the highly refined official style of his time, Jacopo Palma s canvases are a real historical chronicle of that time. VG03 SANTA MARIA DELLA PRESENTAZIONE Le Zitelle The Church of Santa Maria della Presentazione, usually know as Le Zitelle was built between 1581 and The church is the third Palladian focus in the ambitious plan to enhance the view across the lagoon from San Marco. The design was probably based originally on a votive temple. Founded by Venetian gentlewomen, the hospital gave shelter and instruction to attractive women in order to preserve them from prostitution. 5 SANTA MARIA DELLE PENITENTI Santa Maria delle Penitenti is part of a large complex called Pio Loco delle Penitenti; it gained its name as a charitable institution providing an alternative life to former prostitutes. The complex consists of a church, located on the canal, and two longthy wings housing the women with two interior courtyards.
